What Under the Island is about
Under the Island is a 2D action-adventure with a 1990s-inspired feel. Nintendo’s description follows Nia, a newcomer to Seashell Island, and Avocado, a local girl, as they investigate the island’s fate: it is destined to sink beneath the ocean. The adventure includes top-down exploration, puzzles, combat and six regions, with settings such as sentient greenhouses, frozen caverns and sawmills.

Nintendo also describes unusual enemies, artefacts and abilities, animal companions, a cook-off and lost-cat side activities. Those details are the publisher’s product description, rather than independent gameplay findings.
How the physical release fits the digital launch
The digital game launched on 17 February 2026. Slime King Games announced that date for Nintendo Switch, Steam, PS4 and PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series; the Nintendo UK listing and PlayStation Store listing confirm digital editions for their respective platforms.

- New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
The PlayStation Store says its digital purchase includes both PS4 and PS5 versions. That entitlement is specific to the digital product and should not be assumed to apply to a physical copy. Likewise, the Switch digital listing’s download size and other regional product details do not establish what is on a physical cartridge or whether a download is needed.

Slime King Games created Under the Island; Nintendo identifies it as the developer and Top Hat Studios as publisher on its digital listing. The physical-release announcement names Curveball Games and Top Hat Studios as partners. Slime King Games said in its February 2026 release-date post that development took “about 7 years,” including five years part-time and around 2.5 years full-time; that is the developer’s own approximate account.
