Echoes of Sekigahara is worth approaching as a compact character expansion, not a second Iki Island. Its roughly five-hour campaign spends most of its time revisiting Atsu’s past and the Battle of Sekigahara. That makes the DLC feel slight as a standalone adventure, yet its flashbacks, combat encounters and character context can make the main Ghost of Yotei story feel less complete without them.
What Echoes of Sekigahara actually adds
The expansion turns backward rather than forward. Instead of opening a large new chapter after the events of Ghost of Yotei, it returns to Atsu’s pre-Ghost life and the Battle of Sekigahara. GamesRadar+ reviewer Rollin Bishop summarized the problem on 15 October 2026: “For a new expansion, it’s decidedly obsessed with the past.” That is an accurate description of its structure, but not necessarily a criticism of every part of it.

The new content is built around a smaller region with its own bounties, merchants, enemies and traps. It also adds massive weapons and a three-arrow auto-targeting ability, giving Atsu new ways to control groups and deal with tougher encounters. These additions refresh the familiar combat loop without pretending to transform it into a different game.

How long is Echoes of Sekigahara?
VGC’s Jordan Middler estimates approximately five hours for the main campaign. Side missions and bounties add several more hours, depending on how thoroughly you explore the region and pursue optional targets.
| Content | Estimated time | What that time covers |
|---|---|---|
| Main expansion story | About five hours | The central Echoes of Sekigahara campaign |
| Optional content | A few additional hours | Side missions, bounties and exploration |
| Most Wanted mode | Not stated | A separate roguelike mode included with the Complete Edition |
That runtime explains the divided reaction. If you expect a long, forward-moving sequel chapter, the price-to-content question will matter, and no DLC price is established here. If you want more of Atsu’s history and another concentrated set of Ghost of Yotei encounters, the shorter structure may be an advantage.
Does the DLC improve Atsu’s story?
Yes, in context rather than in scale. The flashbacks show the experiences that shaped Atsu before she became the Ghost, giving later decisions additional weight. VGC’s review, published 1 October 2026, makes the strongest case for the expansion: “The highest praise I can give Echoes of Sekigahara is that the main story of Ghost of Yotei is weaker without these sections.”

That does not mean the DLC replaces a missing act of the main plot. It is retrospective by design, so players looking for a major new conflict or a decisive change in Atsu’s present-day journey may find it restrained. Its contribution is interpretive: scenes and relationships that were previously implied receive more room, and Atsu’s identity as a fighter gains clearer roots.
Echoes of Sekigahara versus Iki Island
Echoes of Sekigahara is smaller than Iki Island in both map scale and expansion ambition. Iki Island is the better comparison if you want a broad additional landmass and the feeling of a substantial continuation. Echoes is aimed at a different need: understanding the protagonist’s past and sharpening the meaning of the base game’s story.
| Category | Echoes of Sekigahara | Iki Island comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Story direction | Retrospective; centered on Atsu’s past and Sekigahara | Used here as the larger-scale expansion benchmark |
| New map | Smaller region | Larger expansion footprint than Echoes |
| Narrative function | Adds character context to Atsu’s pre-Ghost life | More substantial continuation in scale |
| Combat additions | Massive weapons, new enemies and traps, plus three-arrow auto-targeting | Specific comparable additions are not stated here |
The practical choice is straightforward: choose Iki Island-style scope if you want a large adventure; choose Echoes if Atsu’s backstory is the reason you keep thinking about Ghost of Yotei. Calling one universally better misses the distinction between expansion size and narrative usefulness.

What Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition includes
The Complete Edition includes Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted, a separate roguelike mode. Most Wanted presents waves of enemies, progression currency and a roster of playable characters that includes Jin Sakai. It is designed for repeat runs rather than a single linear campaign, so it supplies a different kind of replay value from the story expansion.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the DLC still reminds you how good the main game is
The expansion’s strongest effect may be comparative. Returning to Atsu’s movement, timing and weapon feedback highlights how polished the core combat remains. The new traps, larger weapons and three-arrow ability are enjoyable because the underlying encounters already provide a strong foundation.

Presentation and atmosphere also carry the revisit. Echoes spends its limited campaign looking backward, but that focus gives the world’s history a tangible presence. GamesRadar+ still found value in “simply being reminded of how cool it is to be Atsu,” even while wanting more substantial narrative progression. In other words, the DLC can feel under-sized and still make the base game look unusually accomplished.
Who should buy it?
- Buy or play it if you want more of Atsu’s history, value character-driven context, or enjoy compact combat-focused expansions.
- Wait for a discount if your priority is a large new map or a long campaign; the main story is about five hours.
- Choose the Complete Edition if you also want Most Wanted’s wave-based roguelike mode and its additional playable characters.
- Skip it for now if you only want a forward-moving continuation and have little interest in flashbacks.
VGC rated Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition 4/5 and called it “a perfect excuse to return to Atsu’s story.” GamesRadar+ was less satisfied with the expansion’s lack of major progression. Both reactions can be true: Echoes of Sekigahara is not a replacement for a bigger sequel-sized adventure, but it is meaningful additional context for a protagonist whose past helps define the main game.
