Spoilers for all of The Last of Us Season 2 and The Last of Us Part II. The biggest change is how soon the show explains Abby’s motive: the game withholds that context while the series gives it to viewers near the start. Season 2 also reshapes chronology and perspective, moves some actions between characters, and adds scenes that deepen Ellie and Joel’s shared history. It adapts the game’s central dramatic events, not its structure beat for beat.
What Season 2 adapts
Season 2 is based on Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II, the second game in the series, but adaptation to television means changing how and when events reach the audience. HBO’s announcement described the series as based on Naughty Dog’s video game franchise (HBO; Naughty Dog).
The differences are best understood through four questions: when information is revealed, whose perspective shapes it, which character performs a key action, and what relationship material the show adds. Abby’s early context is the largest structural shift; changed patrol pairings and expanded backstory are more localized adjustments.
Abby’s motive is revealed much earlier
In Part II, players encounter Abby before the game fully explains why she acts as she does. The game later shifts perspective, making the player reconsider earlier events with new information. Season 2 instead introduces Abby’s context near the beginning.

That change alters the audience’s alignment with the story. The game makes uncertainty about Abby part of its early experience; the show gives viewers a reason to understand her sooner, changing the suspense and the way they assess the conflict. Co-creator Neil Druckmann explained that making television viewers wait a long interval between seasons for essential context did not feel right (The Hollywood Reporter).
The show reshapes chronology and perspective
Season 2 does not follow the game’s timeline exactly. Co-creator and showrunner Craig Mazin has said the series changes chronology, in part because television and games deliver perspective differently: a player can inhabit a character, while a viewer watches from outside. The adaptation changes when information appears and how long viewers stay without it, rather than simply copying the game’s sequence of playable perspectives (TVLine; TheWrap).

This is why the earlier explanation of Abby’s motive matters beyond one reveal: it is part of a broader adjustment to the way an episodic audience receives context. The series still draws on the game’s perspective design, but it manages transitions and information for viewers rather than players.
Some actions and character pairings change
Changes to who accompanies whom, or who intervenes in a dangerous moment, can preserve a sequence’s broad purpose while giving it a different emotional texture. TheWrap’s episode comparison identifies two Seattle examples:

- Patrol pairings: In the show, Dina goes with Joel while Ellie goes with Jesse; the game uses different pairings.
- A rescue in Seattle: TheWrap reports that Jesse saves Ellie and Dina from Stalkers in the series, whereas his rescue role differs in the game.
These are scene-level reallocations, not evidence that every character’s larger role has been rewritten. They show how the series can redistribute presence and action while adapting the same broader story material (TheWrap).
Added scenes give Ellie and Joel more relationship history
The show expands material around Eugene, a character discussed in the game but never directly encountered by the player. TIME notes that Eugene-related story material gives the series another way to explore Ellie and Joel’s relationship. The game offers less direct access to this history, while the show can dramatize it in scenes viewers watch unfold (TIME).

Season 2 also uses the birthday museum flashback associated with the game in its sixth episode. A Television Academy interview discusses the episode’s script and its use of this memorable scene. On screen, the flashback gives viewers a direct look at a moment in Ellie and Joel’s past rather than asking them to infer the relationship only from later events (Television Academy).
These additions deepen the relationship’s presentation, but they do not automatically establish that the characters’ ultimate motivations have changed. Their clearest function is to put more of the relationship’s history in front of the television audience.
Why the show adds and rearranges material
Mazin described additions as part of the adaptation rather than continuity mistakes: “Anything that you see in that episode that you didn’t see in the game is original to the show, and it was just part of the adaptive process that Neil [Druckmann, co-showrunner] and I go through where we’re looking for things to do.” (TVLine)
The practical distinction is between preserving a dramatic destination and reproducing the exact route. The series keeps the source’s central conflict and key events, but adjusts their setup, timing, and surrounding scenes for an episodic format. The examples here are significant comparisons, not a scene-by-scene catalogue of every difference.
