Following Sony’s price increase effective April 2, 2026, official prices are $649.99, $599.99, and $899.99, respectively. For most physical-media buyers, the standard PS5 remains the best choice. The PS5 Pro is a premium upgrade for players with a capable 4K display who value sharper images, ray tracing, and smoother performance in supported games.
Current PS5 models and U.S. prices
Sony’s official recommended U.S. prices changed on April 2, 2026. Retailers may show rounded prices, temporary discounts, bundles, taxes, or different stock, so confirm the final checkout price. PlayStation Direct currently displays the models at approximately $649, $599, and $899.

Which PS5 should you buy?
Buy the standard PS5 Console if you use discs
The standard PS5 is the safest all-purpose choice. Its included drive lets you play physical PS5 and PS4 games, buy used copies, borrow or lend discs, resell games, and watch Blu-ray media. Those options can reduce software costs over time, especially for shoppers who compare physical prices or regularly buy pre-owned games.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
It is also the better choice if you already own a physical PS4 or PS5 library. A digital-only console cannot use those discs unless you add a compatible drive later.
Buy the PS5 Digital Edition if you are genuinely digital-only
The Digital Edition saves $50 against Sony’s listed standard-PS5 price, but that saving comes with permanent limitations: there is no included drive, no physical-game flexibility, and no Blu-ray playback. You are also tied to PlayStation Store purchases rather than physical discounts, resale, and used-game pricing.
Its listed 825GB capacity is smaller than the standard PS5’s 1TB and far smaller than the Pro’s 2TB. Usable space is lower than the advertised capacity because the console reserves storage for system software and other functions. Choose it only if you are comfortable buying games digitally and managing storage.
Buy the PS5 Pro if image quality matters more than value
The PS5 Pro is not a new console generation. It plays PS5 games, supports the DualSense family, and runs the existing PS5 library. Its purpose is to improve the presentation and performance of compatible games rather than replace the standard PS5.
It makes the most sense for a buyer with a good 4K television or monitor, preferably one with 120Hz support and HDR, who plays several games with meaningful PS5 Pro enhancements. It is a luxury upgrade, not a requirement for playing current PS5 releases.
What PS5 Pro actually improves
Sony highlights three main technologies:
- PSSR: AI-assisted image reconstruction designed to produce a sharper image at a given rendering workload.
- Advanced ray tracing: More detailed reflections, shadows, and lighting effects in supported games.
- Optimized console performance: Higher or more consistent frame rates and improved graphics modes in compatible titles.
In the right game, the Pro can reduce the usual compromise between a high-quality graphics mode and a smoother performance mode. Sony says compatible games can target 60 frames per second, or up to 120fps, with 4K output, ray tracing, and PSSR. That combination is not guaranteed across the library: results depend on the game, its patch, the selected mode, and the display.
Sony currently advertises more than 100 PS5 titles with PS5 Pro enhancements. Because that list can change, use the company’s live PS5 Pro page rather than relying on an undated “complete” list.

Is PS5 Pro worth it?
- New buyer with a 4K/120Hz display: Consider the Pro if you play enhanced games and notice image quality and ray tracing. Otherwise, the standard PS5 is the stronger value.
- Existing PS5 owner: Upgrade only if your display and favorite games can reveal the difference. Selling, trading in, or repurposing your current PS5 can reduce the net cost.
- Disc collector: Prefer the standard PS5. The Pro requires a separately purchased disc drive, raising its effective cost beyond $899.99.
- Digital-only buyer: The Pro offers more storage and better graphics, but the Digital Edition is the economical option if you do not need premium visual improvements.
- Budget-conscious shopper: Choose the standard PS5 or Digital Edition. The Pro premium may be better spent on games, storage, or a better television.
- 1080p-TV owner: The Pro’s principal advantages may be difficult to appreciate. Upgrade the display first unless another feature specifically matters to you.
Games, Game Boost, and backward compatibility
It is important to separate three different kinds of support:
- PS5 Pro Enhanced: The developer has provided a mode or patch designed to use the Pro’s hardware and features.
- Game Boost: The console can improve or stabilize selected PS4 and PS5 games through system-level features, but the result varies.
- Ordinary compatibility: The game runs on the Pro without a confirmed major Pro-specific improvement.
Do not assume that every PS5 game receives the same treatment. Sony explicitly says features vary by title. The Pro can play all PS5 games, and Sony says it supports more than 8,500 PS4 games, although a small number of PS4 titles are excluded. See Sony’s PS5 Pro compatibility guide for current details.
Disc drives, stands, and the real Pro cost
The PS5 Pro is sold as an all-digital console. Sony’s product listing states that the disc drive and vertical stand are sold separately. Therefore, a physical-media buyer should compare the standard PS5’s $649.99 price with the Pro’s $899.99 price plus the separate drive. A buyer who wants a vertical setup must also account for the optional stand.
The standard PS5’s vertical stand is also sold separately, so do not assume that the $649.99 console includes one. Before buying a stand, cover, or drive, check the model group: Sony distinguishes original CFI-1000 consoles, slim CFI-2000 consoles, and PS5 Pro accessories. Existing PS5 covers and the original PS5 base are not universally compatible with the Pro.
Pairing a disc drive with the PS5 Pro requires an internet connection during setup. Digital purchases also require a PlayStation account and internet access. Online multiplayer generally requires PlayStation Plus, subject to Sony’s current terms and game-specific exceptions; check the official PlayStation Plus page for current service details.
Display and network requirements
A 4K display is the most relevant upgrade for seeing the Pro’s intended benefits. A 120Hz-capable television or monitor is needed to use supported high-refresh-rate modes, and HDR can improve color and contrast in compatible games.
The Pro supports Wi-Fi 7, but that only helps when paired with compatible networking equipment. Your router, internet connection, wireless conditions, and the game’s servers still determine network performance. Sony also lists compatibility with Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 5.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
“8K support” should not be read as universal 8K gaming. Sony’s compatibility information limits 8K support to selected games and features. Likewise, claims about 4K, 120fps, ray tracing, and PSSR apply only where the game and display support those features.

The standard PS5 lists 1TB, the Digital Edition lists 825GB, and the Pro lists 2TB. None of those figures represents the space available entirely for games. System software and other console functions reserve part of the SSD.
The Pro’s 2TB is useful for players who keep many large games installed, but it is not itself a reason to pay the full premium. If storage is your main problem, compare the cost of a compatible internal M.2 SSD or USB extended storage instead. Internal SSD expansion and USB storage have different capabilities, so check Sony’s current storage requirements before buying a drive.
Keeping PS5 system software current
Sony’s support pages do not provide a dependable firmware number for this article, so check the version directly on your console:
Settings > System > System Software > Console Information
If the console reports “Up to date,” Sony indicates that the latest official version is installed.
To check for a normal update, go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software. Sony’s full instructions are on its PS5 system software support page.
If an update fails
- Press the PS button to open the control center.
- Select Downloads/Uploads.
- Highlight the failed update.
- Select View Error Info > Try Again.
- If it repeatedly fails, use Sony’s official USB update process.
For the USB method, format the drive as FAT32 or exFAT, create a PS5 folder and an UPDATE folder inside it, and save the official file as PS5UPDATE.PUP. Start Safe Mode by holding the power button until the second beep, then select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device. Sony says approximately 1.1GB of free space is required for the update file.
Use only Sony’s official update files and instructions. Do not select Reinstall PS5 System Software as a routine update step: Sony says that reinstalling deletes console data. Back up important data first. Optional system-software beta releases are separate from the stable public software; beta participation requires eligibility and an invitation or approval process. See Sony’s beta software guidance.

Sony’s current U.S. PS5 page contains a future-facing notice stating that, from January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will be available for purchase digitally only on PlayStation Store and at retailers. Sony also says discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console.
This is a stated future policy notice, not proof that current physical games have already disappeared. It does not change the present advantages of the standard PS5 for existing disc libraries, used games, lending, resale, or Blu-ray playback. Readers who care about physical media should nevertheless factor Sony’s wording and date into a long-term purchase decision. See the current PS5 page for the notice.
Bottom-line buying advice
For most physical-media buyers, buy the standard PS5 Console. It offers the broadest game-buying flexibility and avoids the Pro’s separate-drive cost. Choose the PS5 Digital Edition if you are certain you will buy digitally and want the lowest listed entry price. Choose the PS5 Pro for the best image quality and performance potential when you have a good 4K display, play several Pro-enhanced games, and accept the premium—and potentially the cost of a disc drive and stand.
Existing PS5 owners should keep their current console unless the combination of display, game support, and visual priorities makes the upgrade worthwhile.
