The Legend of Khiimori is the current title of the open-world horse adventure announced as Windstorm: The Legend of Khiimori. It entered Steam Early Access on March 3, 2026, after its original September 2024 target shifted. Set in 13th-century Mongolia, it puts players in the role of a courier rider whose journeys depend on horses, route planning and survival.
What is The Legend of Khiimori?
Mindscape and Aesir Interactive announced the game on May 7, 2024, under the name Windstorm: The Legend of Khiimori. Its setting is 13th-century Mongolia, where players take the role of a young courier crossing a wide landscape to complete missions.

The premise brings together open-world exploration, horse simulation and survival pressures. Horses are central to travel and safety, while the courier’s work involves planning routes through varied biomes and tackling difficult deliveries. The original announcement described taming, breeding and training horses, including developing specialized abilities, alongside building up a nomad camp with yurts, items and resources. Mindscape’s announcement described the game as an adventure shaped around those systems.
Why the name and release date changed
The game was first announced as Windstorm: The Legend of Khiimori, with a planned Steam Early Access launch in September 2024. That date was an original target, not the current release status. Mindscape’s April 3, 2025 update later gave Summer 2025 as the Early Access target, but that too was a dated plan.

Steam now lists the game as The Legend of Khiimori, developed by Aesir Interactive and NightinGames and published by Mindscape. Its listing gives March 3, 2026 as the Early Access release date. The title and date on the current store listing are therefore the useful reference for anyone looking to play. View the current Steam listing and developer FAQ.
What Early Access means for the game
The Steam listing marks the game as Early Access, so it is an unfinished release rather than the completed version. The developer says it expects this period to last approximately 12 months; it has not announced an exact full-release date. That estimate is not a guaranteed schedule.

Features planned for the full version
According to the Steam developer FAQ, planned additions include a main story, an expanded world, more side quests and areas, refined horse and survival mechanics, voice acting, full localization and performance improvements. These are goals for the full version, not promises that every feature is already in the Early Access build.

For players deciding whether to start now or wait, the key trade-off is straightforward: Early Access offers a playable version while development continues, but the full planned story and other listed additions are not yet represented as complete. The right choice depends on whether the current experience of riding, exploration and survival appeals to you without those planned elements.

In an April 3, 2025 update, Mindscape reported that the Kickstarter campaign had passed €400,000 in funding. The publisher said stretch goals had added new biomes, horse and character customization, exotic horse breeds and a Peaceful Mode to the planned game. The same update described Summer 2025 Early Access and console releases in 2026 as plans at that time; they should not be mistaken for the current Steam release record or confirmation of console availability. What the developers say about the horses
In the 2024 announcement, Aesir Interactive Game Director Wolfgang Emmer described the team’s goal as delivering “the most realistic horse gameplay experience, approved by experts.” That is the developer’s statement of intent, not an independent assessment of the game.
