Mewgenics is a single-player, turn-based tactical roguelite where expedition choices and cat breeding feed into each other: take a party into dangerous runs, then use the survivors’ experience, scars, and mutations to shape the household you bring next time. Its appeal is the abundance of tactical combinations and strange outcomes; its costs are punishing setbacks, crude humor, and accessibility limits reported at review time.
What is Mewgenics?
Developed by Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel, Mewgenics launched on February 10, 2026. Steam describes it as a cat tactics and breeding roguelite. Players choose cats from an expanding household, equip class-specific collars such as Fighter, Tank, and Mage, and take a party on turn-based adventures. Cats that return may bring back experience, scars, and mutations, while breeding and trait selection shape future generations. Steam’s listing is the source for the game description and release information.

PC Gamer reviewer Robin Valentine describes selecting four cats, assigning familiar combat roles, and crossing an overland map punctuated by events and shops before entering grid-based battles. In Valentine’s view, the game rewards players who adapt to unpredictable combinations rather than demand precise, repeatable outcomes. Valentine’s review is an account of that reviewer’s experience, not a guarantee that every run will unfold the same way.
How do expeditions and breeding work together?
The two halves are not separate modes bolted together. Expeditions test the party you have assembled; the household layer gives their outcomes consequences beyond a single battle. Cats that make it home can contribute experience and inherited traits, while scars and mutations become part of the roster’s longer story. Choosing which cats to take and which traits to carry forward is therefore both a tactical decision and a long-term management choice.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
This structure suits players who enjoy planning around imperfect resources. A run can create new options for later parties, but it can also leave the household in worse shape than hoped. The attraction is not simply collecting stronger cats: it is responding to what the game’s systems produce and finding a workable next team.
What makes the runs varied—and what can make them frustrating?
Steam advertises more than 1,000 abilities, 900 items, 200 enemies and bosses, and a main campaign of more than 200 hours. These are scope figures published on the store page, not independently measured completion times or a promise about how long any particular player will spend with the game. The breadth helps explain why reviewers emphasize experimentation and surprising combinations rather than one fixed optimal build.

Valentine gave the game a 92 in PC Gamer and reported playing for more than 100 hours, praising the discoveries and tactical combinations while arguing that players need to accept bad luck. TechRadar’s Josephine Watson also praised the complexity and replayability, but warned that some stretches are unforgiving. Watson reported more than 30 hours of play on a gaming laptop and Steam Deck. These are the reviewers’ experiences and judgments; they do not mean every player will encounter the same pace or difficulty.
The practical trade-off is clear: randomness can turn a carefully assembled party into a story you could not have planned, but it can also make losses sting. If you need consistent control over outcomes or dislike setbacks that affect a longer-term roster, the same systems that make Mewgenics distinctive may wear on you.

Is the humor and content right for you?
This is not a gentle pet simulator. The developer’s Steam content description flags blood, dismemberment, decapitation, entrails, feces and urine, sexualized cat behavior, pills, swearing, and innuendo. The description says the cat-humping behavior can be turned off in settings; that does not remove the rest of the listed material. Check Steam’s content description if any of those subjects are a concern.
TechRadar’s Watson identifies the raunchy humor as a possible downside. Whether it lands is a matter of taste, but its grotesque tone is a central part of the game’s presentation rather than an occasional surprise.

What are the accessibility and platform considerations?
At the time of TechRadar’s review, Watson reported that the game had no adjustable subtitles, difficulty options, or colorblind settings. The review did note controls for UI sizing and some visual effects. Those observations are dated to that review and may not describe the current version; check the game’s latest settings and updates before buying if a particular option is essential. The inspected listings establish a digital single-player game on Steam, and TechRadar’s review coverage includes play on PC and Steam Deck. They do not establish availability on other platforms or a physical edition. Steam displayed 90% Very Positive from 28,862 English-language reviews and 87% Very Positive from 1,106 recent reviews on October 8, 2026; these figures are a dated snapshot and can change. Steam’s store page carries the live listing and reception data.

Who should play Mewgenics?
- Consider it if you like grid-based tactical fights, experimenting with builds, and adapting when a run does not go to plan.
- Consider it if managing a household and carrying traits forward sounds as interesting as the expeditions themselves.
- Be cautious if random outcomes, punishing stretches, or losing cats would make the game more stressful than entertaining.
- Be cautious if crude, grotesque humor is a deal-breaker or if you rely on accessibility settings that were absent in TechRadar’s review-time account.
Mewgenics is best understood as a long-form systems game: its tactical runs matter partly because they change the roster and possibilities waiting at home. Reviewers’ praise for its variety comes with real caveats about difficulty and tone, so its appeal depends less on liking cats than on enjoying chaotic tactical experimentation.
