Echoes of Wisdom makes experimentation its main challenge, pairing open-ended echo puzzles with familiar dungeons that may feel easy to some players. Hero Mode raises the damage stakes.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom offers a satisfying challenge if you enjoy making your own solutions. Zelda’s echo-creating Tri Rod opens up inventive ways to solve puzzles and fight, while familiar top-down dungeons provide structure. Those dungeons may feel easy to some players; Hero Mode makes damage more punishing, but it does not change the game’s open-ended approach.

Is Echoes of Wisdom challenging?

It depends on which kind of challenge you want. The game encourages experimentation more than it demands one correct tool or sequence. That freedom can make individual puzzles feel clever and rewarding, but it can also let players bypass the sort of tightly prescribed obstacle that makes a dungeon difficult.

Nintendo Life reviewer Alana Hagues found the dungeons “not particularly challenging,” while praising the way the game combines classic Zelda structure with experimentation. Hero Mode is the clearer choice for players who want combat to bite harder. These are review judgments, not a guarantee that every player will find the same puzzles or encounters easy.

How echoes change puzzles and combat

Zelda uses the Tri Rod, alongside her companion Tri, to create echoes: copies of objects and enemies she encounters in Hyrule. Nintendo’s examples include tables, water blocks, beds, rocks, and monsters. Echoes can help Zelda climb, cross gaps, solve environmental puzzles, or put enemies to work in a fight.

The central skill is deciding what to copy and how to use it. A familiar obstacle may invite several approaches rather than a single solution unlocked by a specific item. GameSpot reviewer Steven Petite reported 127 echoes and praised the freedom that system brings to a top-down Zelda game. That count is GameSpot’s reported figure, not an official Nintendo statistic.

Nintendo described the premise this way: “Then recreate those echoes whenever you like to solve puzzles and defeat enemies.” That freedom is the game’s defining pleasure, especially for players who like testing an idea instead of following a prescribed answer.

  • In this new installment of The Legend of Zelda range, it's up to Zelda and her wisdom to save the kingdom of Hyrule. Its inhabitants disappear into strange cracks - and with them a very specific sword fighter.
  • Step into the role of Princess Zelda and save Hyrule from a mysterious force. Use their wisdom and tri rod to solve puzzles and defeat enemies.
  • Creativity is the key to success: discover the power of Tri-Stab and create imitations of objects and creatures, so-called echoes. Use these echoes to overcome obstacles and take over in battle.
  • Beautifully designed world full of secrets and captivating story full of adventures.

Classic dungeons, less prescribed solutions

The overall rhythm remains recognizable: explore Hyrule, handle local problems, enter dungeons, and take on bosses. What changes is how you approach those challenges. Echoes loosen the usual progression from acquiring a particular tool to using it in a specific way, so traditional dungeon design sits alongside player-directed problem-solving.

That combination is a strength if you want Zelda to feel familiar without making every solution feel predetermined. It may be less satisfying if you prefer dungeons that rigorously teach and test one new mechanic at a time. Hagues’s assessment captures the appeal: “Rather than abandoning the classic formula, Zelda has shown that the old and the new can come together and produce wonderful results that reward experimentation and reinforce the joy of play.”

Does Hero Mode make Echoes of Wisdom harder?

Hero Mode is the option for a more demanding run. Hagues says it can be selected at any point and describes its damage challenge as one that “definitely bites.” It raises the stakes of combat, but the available review evidence does not suggest that it replaces the open-ended puzzle design or makes every dungeon inherently more complex.

If your main concern is enemy damage, Hero Mode is worth considering. If you want puzzles and dungeons to enforce narrower, more exact solutions, the mode may not address that preference: the echo system still invites improvisation.

Controls and performance can interrupt the flow

Nintendo Life’s North American review reports frame-rate drops in the overworld and describes lock-on and target selection as fiddly. Those issues matter to a game built around exploring and responding to enemies: inconsistent performance can distract from traversal, while awkward target cycling can make combat feel less precise. They are reviewer-reported drawbacks, not universal technical measurements.

GameSpot also lists frame-rate issues among its drawbacks. Its reviewer additionally reported encountering a bug that blocked progression; that is a specific review experience, not evidence that all players will encounter the same problem. Nintendo Life also felt that the game’s automatons were underdeveloped, while GameSpot found the narrative made little impact.

Who will enjoy Echoes of Wisdom?

  • Good fit: players who enjoy experimenting with tools, improvising in combat, and finding their own way through puzzles.
  • Good fit: Zelda fans who want familiar top-down exploration and dungeons alongside a new way to solve problems.
  • Less ideal: players who want consistently demanding dungeons or tightly controlled, tool-specific puzzle solutions.
  • Worth weighing: players sensitive to frame-rate dips or fiddly target selection, both of which Nintendo Life reported in its review.

Nintendo Life estimated a 15–20-hour adventure; that is the reviewer’s estimate, not an official playtime guarantee. Nintendo released the game for Nintendo Switch on September 26, 2024. Nintendo UK lists both a game-card edition and a download edition.

Verdict

Echoes of Wisdom is a satisfying challenge when the fun lies in experimenting, not in being forced down a single difficult path. Its echoes make puzzles and combat unusually flexible, and its classic dungeon framework gives that freedom a familiar shape. The trade-off is that the core dungeons may feel undemanding; Hero Mode offers a sharper damage challenge, while reported performance and targeting rough edges can interrupt the adventure.
