They are not two official Zelda releases. The Legend of Zelda: Sands of Time is an unofficial, fan-made ROM hack built on The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Coverage of the project describes a rewritten premise, new locations such as Steel Town, original dungeons, bosses, items, enemies, music, and quality-of-life changes. Ocarina of Time, by contrast, is Nintendo’s official Nintendo 64 game and the basis for its later 3DS edition.
The practical comparison is therefore “official original versus ambitious community conversion,” not “one Nintendo sequel versus another.”

The subtitle creates an immediate trap. In this article, “Sands of Time” means The Legend of Zelda: Sands of Time, the community project built from Ocarina of Time. It does not mean Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, an unrelated action-adventure game. A UCLA eScholarship dissertation discusses that Prince of Persia title’s time-rewind mechanic separately from earlier time-manipulation games, including Ocarina of Time; the two products should not be merged simply because their subtitles match.

The Zelda project is best described as a fan-made ROM hack or unofficial Ocarina of Time conversion. That wording matters. A ROM hack modifies an existing game’s data, such as its maps, scripts, models, encounters or audio, rather than being a new Nintendo product with its own retail release and canon status. The available coverage identifies Sands of Time in precisely that way.
What the status tells you
Because the project is unofficial, Nintendo’s descriptions of Ocarina of Time do not certify the hack’s story, content, compatibility or quality. Buying or owning an official copy of Ocarina of Time does not itself include Sands of Time. The hack has to be treated as a separate community-made project, and its availability can depend on fan distribution and compatibility details that are not established in the cited coverage.
The reported version
Softonic coverage by Jesús Bosque, dated August 29, 2026, reports version 1.22. That is a secondary report, not a verified release notice from a primary project page. It is therefore safer to call 1.22 the version reported by that article than to present it as the unquestionably current build. No dependable, independently verified download count or other popularity statistic is established.
What Ocarina of Time contributes
Ocarina of Time is the official reference point for every difference. Nintendo UK describes the original Nintendo 64 game as the series’ move into 3D, with a new combat system and a captivating story. Those are not merely cosmetic foundations: they define the camera, movement, targeting, item use, dungeon logic and audiovisual language that a hack must inherit or alter.
The official game has its own complete adventure, progression and encounter design. Its identity comes from Nintendo’s implementation of a three-dimensional Hyrule, sword combat adapted to that space, and a story structured around the hero’s journey through time. When a community project changes maps or scripts, it is changing that established framework rather than replacing it with an unrelated engine.
The 3DS edition is still the official path
Nintendo’s official pages identify Ocarina of Time 3D as a release for the Nintendo 3DS family. That confirms an official, separately distributed version of the original adventure. It does not turn the ROM hack into a 3DS product, and the 3DS listing should not be read as a listing for Sands of Time.

Story: a different outcome, not Nintendo canon
The central narrative distinction is the project’s reported alternate-history setup. Secondary coverage says the hero fails, Ganon rules for generations, and a different adventurer’s journey begins after Ganon’s death. This is a deliberately darker inversion of the familiar heroic outcome: the world has already endured a long period of domination before the new protagonist’s story starts.

That premise belongs to the hack’s own fiction. It is not evidence that Nintendo changed the official Zelda timeline, and it should not be presented as a canonical sequel chapter. The safest formulation is “coverage of the hack describes an alternate-timeline premise.” It leaves room for differences between summaries, revisions and the project’s own in-game presentation.
How the premise changes the player’s expectations
In the official game, the player enters a carefully authored Nintendo adventure whose status in the Zelda series is established. In Sands of Time, the reported setup asks the player to approach the world as a recovery story: the old order has collapsed, the consequences of defeat have had time to accumulate, and the new adventurer is not simply replaying the original hero’s role.
This distinction affects interpretation even before any new dungeon is entered. Familiar names or visual references, if present, would be reinterpretations inside a fan project rather than confirmations of Nintendo’s timeline. Players looking for official continuity should regard the story as an independent “what if?” built on Nintendo’s technology and assets.
What the hack reportedly adds
Coverage from Softonic and a Kotaku game listing describes additions across nearly every major content category. The reports are useful for understanding scope, but they are not a complete, creator-verified feature list. The following breakdown keeps the reported additions separate from features confirmed by Nintendo.

Steel Town is the specifically named new location in the available descriptions. Kotaku also refers broadly to new worlds. That suggests the project is not a short texture edit or a single altered room; it aims to give exploration a different geographic structure. The sources do not establish the exact number of areas, their full names, their order, or how much of each zone is optional.

Original dungeons
The hack is reported to contain original dungeons. In a Zelda game, a dungeon is more than a new backdrop: it normally combines navigation, locked progression, equipment use, puzzles and a boss encounter. The reports do not provide a verified dungeon count or a room-by-room guide, so readers should not infer a specific length or difficulty curve from the word “original” alone.
Bosses, enemies and power-ups
Both the Softonic summary and the Kotaku listing describe new gameplay content, including bosses, enemies and power-ups or items. These additions can change how the player approaches combat and exploration, but the available sources do not document their names, damage values, drop tables, item locations or balance. Treat those elements as reported features rather than as a complete specification.
Music and presentation
The project is also described as having its own soundtrack or added music. Softonic’s coverage notes presentation limitations, without establishing a standardized technical score or a measurable comparison with Nintendo’s audio presentation. That is an important expectation-setting point: a large amount of new content does not guarantee the same polish, consistency or audiovisual integration as an official release.
Quality-of-life changes
Kotaku’s listing mentions quality-of-life changes in addition to new worlds, power-ups, enemies and story material. The cited descriptions do not enumerate each convenience feature, so it would be misleading to promise a particular menu option, control remap, save behavior or difficulty setting. Players should verify any specific feature against documentation for the exact build they use.
How the gameplay relationship works
Sands of Time remains tied to Ocarina of Time at the foundation level. The comparison is not between two unrelated games that happen to use the same protagonist. The hack starts from Nintendo’s 3D adventure and changes selected data and systems to create a new experience. That relationship explains both its appeal and its limits.
What carries over conceptually
- The basic three-dimensional Zelda framework comes from Ocarina of Time.
- The hack’s new spaces must work within the capabilities and constraints of the original game’s technology.
- Players familiar with Nintendo’s movement, targeting and item-driven exploration have a useful starting point, even when the new content changes the route or objective.
What cannot be assumed
- Knowing the original dungeon order does not reveal the hack’s progression.
- Familiar enemy behavior does not establish how reported new enemies or bosses function.
- Ownership of an official release does not provide the hack or guarantee that a particular edition is compatible.
- A version number reported by a secondary article does not prove that every download carrying that number is authentic or current.
In practice, the most useful mental model is “new adventure inside an old technical frame.” That is more accurate than calling the project either a conventional sequel or a simple fan translation.

Availability, editions and setup uncertainty
The official game
Nintendo UK confirms that Ocarina of Time 3D is available for Nintendo 3DS family systems, and Nintendo Japan maintains an official page for that edition. Those pages document Nintendo’s own release. They do not document a Nintendo distribution of Sands of Time.
The hack
The sources identify Sands of Time as a ROM hack rather than a retail game. They do not verify a current official project homepage, a supported base-ROM revision, a checksum, a patching utility, or current installation instructions. For that reason, an exact setup recipe would risk sending readers toward an incompatible or unofficial file.
Anyone investigating the project should first locate documentation maintained by the project’s own creators or current community, confirm the required base revision, and check whether the instructions match the reported build. Do not assume that a patch intended for one regional or revision-specific copy will work with every release of Ocarina of Time. This article intentionally does not provide download links or unverified technical commands.
Why the distinction matters
The lack of a Nintendo retail channel affects expectations about support. An official game generally has a defined platform, edition and publisher documentation. A fan hack can change as maintainers revise it, may have incomplete documentation, and may not preserve compatibility between versions. The reported 1.22 label is useful for identifying what Softonic discussed, but it is not a substitute for primary release notes.

How it differs from Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
The matching subtitle causes genuine search confusion. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is a separate game, associated with a rewind mechanic and its own setting and publisher. It is not the source of the Zelda hack, and the Zelda project is not a version of that game. For this comparison, “Sands of Time” always refers to the unofficial Zelda ROM hack unless the Prince of Persia title is explicitly named.
Which one should you play?
Choose Ocarina of Time when you want an official, documented starting point
- You want Nintendo’s authored story and established series context.
- You prefer a release with a clearly identified platform and edition.
- You want to understand the original 3D combat and exploration design that the hack modifies.
- You are approaching the Zelda series for the first time and want the canonical baseline before experimenting with fan projects.
Choose Sands of Time when you want a community reinterpretation
- You have already played, or at least understand, Ocarina of Time and want a different premise built on its foundation.

For many players, the order is simple
Start with the official game if its story, mechanics or terminology are unfamiliar. Move to the fan project afterward if its reported premise and added content appeal to you, while treating its compatibility and version information as project-specific.
What the available coverage does—and does not—establish
The descriptions agree on the broad identity of the project: it is an Ocarina of Time ROM hack with a new story direction and substantial added content. They do not establish a definitive feature matrix, a creator-authored changelog, a current supported version beyond the secondary report of 1.22, or technical requirements for applying a patch.
That evidence boundary matters for practical questions. It supports saying that Steel Town, original dungeons, bosses, items, music and quality-of-life changes are reported additions. It does not support promising a specific number of dungeons, naming every new item, declaring a complete soundtrack list, or guaranteeing compatibility with a particular Nintendo 3DS configuration.
Nintendo’s official material is stronger evidence for the status and description of Ocarina of Time and Ocarina of Time 3D. Secondary coverage is the basis for the hack’s reported premise and features. Keeping those categories separate produces a more reliable comparison than presenting every claim as if it came from the same publisher.
The bottom line for readers comparing them
Ocarina of Time is Nintendo’s official 3D Zelda adventure. Sands of Time is an unofficial ROM hack that reportedly turns that foundation into an alternate-timeline journey with new areas, dungeons, encounters, equipment, music and convenience changes.
