In a 2018 GamesBeat panel account, Dean Takahashi used “leisure economy” as an umbrella for jobs and businesses built around games: competing, making content, supporting communities, and creating or selling virtual goods. The examples show possible paths—not typical earnings or a reliable route to a living.
What “the leisure economy” means
Takahashi’s April 18, 2018 GamesBeat article describes an emerging economy around gaming and virtual worlds. Its premise is that games can be more than entertainment: they can be workplaces, creative platforms, and marketplaces. That does not mean ordinary play is automatically paid, or that most players can turn it into dependable income.

The article covered a GamesBeat Summit 2018 panel moderated by Adam Sessler, then cofounder of Spiketrap. Panelists were Jon “Neverdie” Jacobs of Neverdie Studios, Gio Hunt of Blizzard Entertainment, Philip Rosedale of High Fidelity, and Craig Donato of Roblox. Their comments reflect the possibilities and expectations discussed at that time.

What the historical examples show—and what they do not
Roblox creators
The GamesBeat article reported that Roblox had 50 million players a month at the time. That is a historical figure from 2018, not a current player count. Roblox chief business officer Craig Donato said, “The top creators can now make enough money that they can form teams.” His statement describes the possibility for top creators; it does not show what creators typically earn or how likely a newcomer is to reach that level.
League of Legends scholarships
The article said 500 students were going to college on League of Legends scholarships. This is a statement reported in the 2018 article, not a verified current total. It illustrates one way esports was linked to education, but does not establish the present number of scholarships or the likelihood that playing will fund a student’s education.

Virtual-world commerce and proposed systems
The article pointed to Second Life residents buying and selling goods and to activity in Roblox as signs of a virtual economy. Jacobs argued that blockchain could let assets move between games; that was his view, not an established feature across games. Later GamesBeat articles described ClanPlay’s 2018 plans for a token-based marketplace rewarding in-game actions and Forte’s ambitions for blockchain game-economy infrastructure. Those reports document ideas and projects from that period, not current availability, success, or reliable player earnings.

It can, if “playing games” means doing specific work around them: competing, producing content, building virtual goods, or supporting a game community. The work often includes skills beyond playing, such as performance, editing, design, communication, audience development, or operating a business. The GamesBeat account does not quantify how many people succeed, how much they earn, or how secure these careers are.

Gio Hunt, then Blizzard’s executive vice president and executive producer of platform technology and experiences, said, “There are plenty of people who are approaching games as a job, and that’s an economy,” in the 2018 article. It captures the panel’s thesis, not a guarantee that a particular player can make a living. Treat a gaming-related career as a specific occupation with its own skills and risks, rather than as a promise that more hours of play will produce income.
