Throne and Liberty has no fixed classes to choose at character creation: your weapons define your combat role. So the best “class” depends on what you want to do—large-scale PvP, small-scale PvP, or PvE damage—and whether you prefer to tank, support, or deal damage. Community tier lists offer useful dated snapshots, not a universal or official answer.
How classes work in Throne and Liberty
The game’s official gameplay page puts it plainly: “Choose your combat role by wielding weapons, not selecting classes.” Your weapon pairing shapes your skills and role, while Weapon Mastery lets you select nodes that alter or empower skills. That means “best class” is shorthand for the two-weapon combination that suits your activity and playstyle.

What each weapon brings
- Sword and Shield: blocks attacks and protects allies.
- Greatsword: heavy strikes and stuns.
- Longbow: ranged attacks and support.
- Crossbow: sustained ranged pressure.
- Wand: curses and healing.
- Staff: elemental attacks.
- Daggers: fast, poisoned strikes.
- Gauntlets: close-range combos.
- Orb: tactical sphere placement.
- Spear: attacks multiple enemies and targets defenses.
These are role and playstyle cues, not a ranking of weapon pairings. A PvE DPS list, for example, does not tell you which pairing is the best tank or healer.
Best combinations depend on the game mode
A community tier page labeled for the Talandre patch separates large-scale PvP, small-scale PvP, and PvE DPS. Its combinations differ by mode, so use each list only for the activity it ranks. The placements below are that page’s reported S tiers—not official recommendations or independently measured results. The page says it mirrors Maxroll ratings, dates the source ranking to March 27, 2026, and says it verified its listing on May 13, 2026. See the Talandre tier list for its full rankings.

| Activity | S-tier combinations reported | What the list covers |
|---|---|---|
| Large-scale PvP | Wand/Longbow; Sword & Shield/Greatsword; Sword & Shield/Wand; Staff/Dagger; Staff/Orb | Mode-specific community ranking, not an official or measured strength result. |
| Small-scale PvP | Greatsword/Dagger; Sword & Shield/Greatsword; Sword & Shield/Wand; Staff/Dagger; Crossbow/Dagger; Staff/Orb | Keep separate from large-scale PvP: its S tier is different. |
| PvE DPS | Crossbow/Wand; Staff/Orb; Crossbow/Orb | Damage ranking only; it does not rank every PvE job, such as tanking or healing. |
These are dated placements, not a guarantee of October 2026 performance. Do not carry a PvP placement over to PvE, or assume that a PvE DPS tier identifies the strongest support or frontline option.
What to choose if you are still deciding
Start with the job you want to do, then use tier rankings as a mode-specific reference rather than a substitute for that choice.
- Pick your activity. Decide whether you care most about large-scale PvP, small-scale PvP, or PvE damage. The available tier snapshot ranks those separately.
- Choose a role. Consider whether you want to protect allies, heal or support, or focus on damage. The official weapon descriptions explain broad functions, but the reviewed PvE tier list is specifically for DPS.
- Match the weapon feel. Use the official descriptions to narrow the field: for example, Sword and Shield for blocking and protection, Wand for curses and healing, or Daggers for fast poisoned attacks.
- Check the date and coverage. Confirm the patch label and publication or verification date, and check whether the list includes the weapon types you are considering. Treat older lists cautiously.
The available evidence does not establish a universal beginner ranking or a reliable gear-cost comparison across all pairings. A tier label alone also cannot tell you which combination you will enjoy playing.

How current are the rankings?
As of October 2026, an official report from the Throne and Liberty team describes changes being prepared for November; it does not establish that those changes have shipped. The October 2026 Resistance Report says combat-stat values vary too much depending on an opponent’s build or weapon combination. The team plans to strengthen Hit Chance and adjust Dagger synergy, including reducing excessive Dagger Evasion synergy. It also says it is preparing changes to gear drops and Skill Core acquisition, including increases in specified content and guaranteed crafting. Detailed schedules and specifics are to come through release notes.
Because those changes are plans in the report, not confirmed live adjustments, do not use them to claim that a particular weapon pairing has already risen or fallen in strength. Check official release notes for implementation and a current mode-specific build review before relying on post-change rankings.
Why one PvE tier list is not enough
A separate PvE article dated August 31, 2026 ranks Wand/Orb, Staff/Wand, and Crossbow/Orb as S tier, using sustained damage, ease of pickup, and versatility across world bosses, Ark Bosses, and group dungeons as comparison axes. But it explicitly says its list predates the launch of Gauntlets and that it will add Gauntlet combinations in a later update. Its PvE ranking is therefore an incomplete roster snapshot, not a resolution of the full October 2026 PvE meta.
The two PvE lists also have different dates and coverage. Rather than treating their S tiers as one definitive ranking, compare each list’s scope and date—and avoid drawing a current all-weapon conclusion from a list that excludes Gauntlets.
