It was software, not a handset made from blocks. In 2015, Verizon worked with Minecraft creators SethBling and CaptainSparklez on Boxel, a web app and Minecraft interface that reportedly let players browse web content and connect to real phones, with the experience rendered in the game’s blocky style.
What was the Minecraft phone?
Boxel was a technology demonstration reported by GameSpot on December 2, 2015. Verizon partnered with Minecraft creators SethBling and CaptainSparklez to build a web app and special code that linked outside content and communications with a Minecraft experience. GameSpot reported that development took nearly three months.
The phrase “cell phone in Minecraft” can make it sound as if someone built a working physical phone out of in-game blocks. That is not what the reports describe: the phone was an in-game interface connected to software and external services. Verizon said users could open websites, take an MMS selfie using an in-game selfie stick, and make a video conference call to a cell phone, with the activity visualized through Minecraft’s standard blocky interface. GameSpot’s 2015 report quotes Verizon’s statement and describes the features.
How did calls and web content appear in Minecraft?
PC Gamer’s contemporaneous account describes Boxel as using a server-client system to translate web pages and streaming video into blocks that could be built in the game in real time. In the reported call setup, the person on the phone saw the player’s Minecraft avatar, while the player saw the other person’s video feed represented in blocks. That block-rendered view was the interface for outside content; it was not evidence that the avatar itself was a cellular device. PC Gamer’s explanation of Boxel gives the technical outline.

How Boxel differs from a Minecraft phone mod
Modern phone mods offer a similar-looking idea—using a phone inside Minecraft—but they are a different kind of project. Boxel was an external web app and infrastructure connecting the game to outside web content and real-world calls. A current mod instead adds phone features to a Minecraft setup, with the supported game version, mod loader, and other required mods determining what works.
| Feature | Verizon’s Boxel (2015) | Modern Phone listing (checked October 8, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| What calls connect to | Reports describe video conferencing to a cell phone. GameSpot | Calls are between people on a Minecraft server; the listing does not describe calls to ordinary phone numbers. CurseForge |
| How it works | A web app and special code, with web pages and streaming video rendered as blocks, according to the reporting. PC Gamer | A downloadable Minecraft mod with phone functions such as messaging, photos, social features, and other apps. CurseForge |
| Dependencies and compatibility | Historical project infrastructure; current Minecraft compatibility is not stated in the reports. | The listing names Minecraft 1.21.1 and 1.20.1, with loaders varying by version. Voice and video require Simple Voice Chat for audible calls. Check the listing for current compatibility before installing. CurseForge |
| Present-day availability | Not established by the 2015 reports. GameSpot and PC Gamer | Listed on CurseForge; version support may change. CurseForge |
Can you use Boxel today?
The 2015 reports establish what Boxel demonstrated at the time, but they do not establish that its app or supporting infrastructure is still available or works with current Minecraft releases. It would be misleading to treat Boxel as a mod you can install today. For a present-day in-game phone, Modern Phone is a separate project: consult its CurseForge page for its current files, version compatibility, and dependencies. Its listed calls are for players on a server, not ordinary telephone numbers.

What about RealmDialer?
RealmDialer was a separate student project, not a successor to Boxel. Its Devpost description says it used a Minecraft item and T-Mobile’s Your Number Anywhere API alongside Java, JavaScript, MCreator, and BlockBench. The described implementation redirected users to a browser page; direct WebRTC integration and video calls between virtual and physical worlds were presented as future goals. The project page does not establish that the API remains available. RealmDialer on Devpost provides the project description.
