The console costs $229.99 in the US, based on the price listed on August 18, 2026, and a controller is sold separately. That makes it attractive against premium FPGA alternatives, while an existing working N64 can still be the less expensive option.
The M64’s case is convenience: HDMI output up to 4K, region-free cartridge support according to ModRetro, four controller ports, built-in Expansion Pak and Controller Pak functionality, and a fanless modern design. Its main caveats are the extra controller cost, an actively evolving compatibility record, and the lack of equivalent Transfer Pak support at launch.

What the ModRetro M64 actually is
The M64 is a standalone console built around an FPGA implementation of N64 hardware behavior. It is designed to read original Nintendo 64 cartridges rather than run a conventional software emulator. That distinction matters to collectors: you can use the cartridges already on your shelf, while getting a modern HDMI connection and new hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIt is not an original Nintendo motherboard. “FPGA-based” means the console recreates the system’s behavior in programmable hardware; it does not make the M64 identical to a decades-old Nintendo 64 in every electrical, timing, or display characteristic.

- 🎮 340 games in 1 cartridge for N64 console.
- 🎮 Region Free, works on USA/EUR/Japan region N64 consoles.
- 🎮 Includes Retrotech printed instructions for a classic feel.
ModRetro lists support for NTSC and PAL cartridges, HDMI output at 720p, 1080p, 1440p, or 4K, 4K output at 60 frames per second, uncompressed 48kHz 16-bit PCM audio, four controller ports, a built-in Expansion Pak, built-in Controller Pak functionality, a 16GB SD card, a worldwide 100–240V power supply, wired or wireless firmware updates, and fanless operation. The product is also advertised as open-source and mod-friendly. See the official M64 specifications for the current feature list.
Higher resolution is primarily an output and presentation benefit. A 4K signal does not mean N64 games are rendered with modern 4K-native assets, nor does it recreate the exact appearance of a consumer CRT.
How much does a complete M64 setup cost?
The headline price is $229.99 for the console alone. The package includes the M64, a pre-installed 16GB SD card, the power cable, and a multi-region power adapter. It does not include a controller.

| Setup | Hardware cost before tax and shipping | Assumption |
|---|---|---|
| M64 only | $229.99 | You already own a compatible controller |
| M64 plus M64 Pro Controller | $319.98 | The controller is listed at $89.99 |
| M64 plus Hyperkin Captain+ controller | $259.98 | Based on the $29.99 accessory listing shown by ModRetro |
| M64 plus an existing N64 controller | $229.99 | You reuse a controller you already own |
The earlier $199.99 early-bird figure belongs to the launch period. It should not be used as the current price. Prices, taxes, shipping, stock, and regional availability can change, so US buyers should confirm the total on the live product page.
Which controllers work?
You do not need to buy ModRetro’s controller. The M64 supports original Nintendo 64 controllers and several modern alternatives, including ModRetro M64 Pro Controllers, Hyperkin Premium Captain controllers, Retro Fighters controllers, Nintendo Switch Online N64 controllers with an accessory, and 8BitDo 64 controllers, according to ModRetro.
That makes an existing controller the cheapest route. It also makes four-player games practical without assuming that every buyer needs to purchase four new pads. However, “compatible” does not mean every controller feels like an original N64 pad. Stick mechanisms, gates, button feel, wired connections, and wireless behavior can differ considerably.

Does it play your original cartridges?
ModRetro advertises support for original cartridges from any region, including North American, European, and Japanese games. That is the central reason to consider the M64 over ordinary software emulation.
There is an important difference between that broad product claim and the company’s public testing record. ModRetro’s compatibility database describes itself as a continually updated resource focused on North American NTSC releases. Its coverage and notes should be treated as an active testing record, not as independent proof that every cartridge, revision, save type, repro, or accessory behaves identically.
Before buying, search for the games that matter most to you. Be especially careful with technically unusual titles, cartridges with uncommon save hardware, regional variants, and games that depend on accessories. A cartridge that fails to boot is not automatically evidence of an M64 compatibility problem: dirty contacts, damaged boards, or a faulty cartridge can also be responsible.
PAL, Japanese games, and flash cartridges
The M64’s region-free claim is useful for collectors with mixed libraries, but the public database’s NTSC emphasis means regional variants have not necessarily received identical testing coverage. ModRetro’s claim should therefore be read as official support for the cartridge regions, not as a promise that every regional revision has the same documented status.
Flash cartridges require additional caution. The official product information does not provide a complete compatibility table for every EverDrive, SummerCart, or other flash-cart revision. If flash-cart use is central to your setup, check the current M64 documentation and the exact model’s compatibility before purchasing. Support for one revision or save method does not automatically guarantee support for all of them.

Expansion Pak, Controller Pak, and Transfer Pak support
Expansion Pak functionality and Controller Pak functionality are built into the M64. You do not need to source those original accessories separately for the features the console reproduces internally.
Rank #3
- Extensive Game Collection: The included 32GB TF card comes pre-loaded with a diverse selection of nearly 5000 game titles compatible with your Nintendo 64 console. Please note that due to compatibility with various console versions, some game files may appear duplicated. This is normal operation.
- Blazing-Fast Performance: Experience incredibly fast load times and smooth gameplay thanks to a peak transfer rate of 23.8 MiB/s.
- Comprehensive 64DD Emulation: Relive the experience of the 64DD peripheral with full emulation, allowing you to play games originally released only on this add-on.
- Enhanced Features: Beyond gaming, enjoy added functionalities such as MP3 music playback, background image support, and a user-friendly menu system.
- Advanced Save System: Never lose your progress again with reliable auto-save functionality.
Transfer Pak support is different. ModRetro currently connects it to planned firmware support associated with Chromatic, rather than presenting it as an equivalent built-in feature available today. If you need Transfer Pak behavior for a particular game or accessory, the M64 should not be treated as a guaranteed replacement until the relevant support is released and your specific use case is documented.
What is the display and setup experience?
The M64 is intended for modern televisions. Connect HDMI, connect the supplied power equipment, plug in a compatible controller, insert a cartridge, and turn it on. ModRetro advertises booting in seconds and approximately five-second boot-to-game behavior in its launch material. Firmware updates are supported through the console’s update system, although the exact menu labels and procedure can change with software revisions.
Optional CRT-style filters and scanline effects can make the image feel more period-appropriate, but they cannot fully reproduce the behavior of a real CRT. Likewise, HDMI convenience does not establish that the M64 provides native analog CRT output; buyers seeking that connection should verify the current manual or support documentation rather than assume it.
Accuracy, latency, and overclocking
ModRetro positions the M64 around accurate gameplay timing, audio, and video reproduction, and describes the FPGA implementation as a way to reproduce N64 behavior closely. Independent reviews, including TechRadar’s month-long review, have also praised the overall experience. Those impressions are useful, but they are not a complete title-by-title compatibility audit or a controlled latency certification.
The M64 includes a standard overclocking mode. ModRetro says it can reduce frame-rate drops present on original cartridges, with a more advanced mode planned for a future firmware update. Overclocking can improve demanding scenes, but it may also move the experience away from original timing. Start with the default mode if authenticity is your priority; treat overclocking as an optional enhancement rather than an automatic upgrade.
The practical distinction is:
- Original-style play: default timing, no overclock, and optional minimal filtering.
- Enhanced play: overclocking, image filters, and modern display processing for a cleaner or smoother presentation.
Firmware updates and recovery
Firmware is part of the M64’s value proposition. Updates can improve compatibility and add features, but future support should not be counted as a launch-day feature. Transfer Pak-related support and more advanced overclocking are examples of capabilities tied to future software.

ModRetro’s support documentation says an M64 can be recovered after an update problem provided the console has not been physically damaged. If an update fails, use the current M64 recovery guide rather than improvising. Recovery reassurance is not the same as zero risk, and the procedure may change as firmware and support materials are updated.
M64 versus an original Nintendo 64
| Consideration | ModRetro M64 | Original N64 |
|---|---|---|
| Cartridges | Designed for original cartridges; broad region support claimed by ModRetro | Native original hardware |
| Modern displays | HDMI output up to 4K | Usually requires composite input, an adapter, or an upscaler |
| Authenticity | Modern FPGA reproduction | Original Nintendo hardware |
| Condition | New console with current firmware | Used hardware with variable wear and maintenance needs |
| Controller | Separate purchase unless you already own one | Often bundled only when buying a used system, depending on seller |
| CRT use | Not confirmed as native analog output | Natural fit for a CRT setup |
If you already have a working N64, controller, power adapter, video cable, and a display solution you like, the M64 is not cheaper. You are paying $229.99 for a modern replacement or upgrade. If you are starting from scratch, the comparison depends on the used console’s condition, included accessories, local price, shipping, repairs, and whether you also need an HDMI solution.
An original N64 may need cartridge-slot cleaning, cable replacement, repairs, or other maintenance. Conversely, a reliable used bundle can still cost less than an M64. There is no universal used-N64 price without specifying a country, date, condition, and seller.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.M64 versus Analogue 3D
Analogue 3D is the clearest premium alternative. Analogue markets it as an FPGA-based console for original N64 cartridges and claims compatibility with the complete original N64 library.
The comparison should not rely on an old launch price: Analogue’s current price, stock, firmware, accessories, shipping, and regional terms need to be checked at the time of purchase. The M64’s strongest value argument is its $229.99 console price and its emphasis on open-source and mod-friendly design. Analogue’s strongest argument is its own compatibility and ecosystem positioning.
Neither product should be evaluated by resolution alone. Cartridge behavior, controller support, firmware maturity, warranty, availability, accessory support, and the specific games you play matter more than whether the menu advertises 4K.

What about software emulation?
Software emulation remains the lowest-upfront-cost route for players who do not need original cartridges. It can work very well, but results vary with the emulator, device, controller, display processing, and settings. It also requires a separate solution for legally obtaining and managing game software.
The M64’s advantage is not that software emulation is inherently unusable. Its advantage is that it combines original-cartridge use, modern HDMI output, local multiplayer, and FPGA-based hardware reproduction in one appliance.
Who should buy the M64?
- You already own original N64 cartridges and want HDMI output.
- You want a silent, compact, plug-and-play replacement for an aging console.
- You already own an N64 controller and want to keep the total cost at $229.99 before tax and shipping.
- You want four-player support for local multiplayer.
- You prefer an FPGA-based solution over ordinary software emulation.
- You want region-free cartridge support for a mixed library.
- You accept that compatibility and features will continue to depend on firmware updates.
Who should skip it or wait?
- You already own a working N64 and are satisfied with its picture and reliability.
- Your only goal is the cheapest possible way to play N64 games.
- You require native CRT connectivity.
- You need guaranteed support for a particular Transfer Pak use, flash cartridge, repro, or unusual accessory.
- You expect the $229.99 package to include a controller.
- You want a fully mature compatibility record covering every regional variant and accessory.
- You value original Nintendo hardware more than HDMI convenience.
Verdict: cheaper for whom?
The ModRetro M64 is best understood as a reasonably priced modern cartridge console, not a universally cheap N64. At $229.99, it is compelling if you already own cartridges and a controller, particularly when compared with premium FPGA alternatives or the cost of assembling an original console-plus-HDMI setup. Add the $89.99 M64 Pro Controller and the value proposition changes to $319.98 before tax and shipping.
