The closure ended sales of many Xbox 360 games, downloadable content, trials, avatar items, apps, and video products—but it did not erase previously purchased games or immediately shut down Xbox Live.
As of 2026, the practical question is no longer what to buy before the deadline. It is which content survived, how to recover your old library, and whether a game is still available through the modern Xbox Store, a physical disc, or an official re-release.

What actually closed?
Microsoft closed two purchasing storefronts: the Xbox 360 Store accessed from the console and the Xbox 360 Marketplace website. New purchases through those services stopped on July 29, 2024.

The affected categories included:
- Xbox 360 games
- Downloadable content, expansions, and some in-game purchases
- Trials and demos
- Avatar items and gamer pictures
- Apps
- Game trailers and other videos
- Microsoft Films & TV content on Xbox 360
This was primarily a storefront shutdown—not an instant Xbox 360 hardware, account, or Xbox network shutdown. Microsoft’s announcement said owners could continue playing purchased content and redownloading it. Microsoft’s original announcement also said cloud saves and supported online features would continue, although individual game servers remain controlled by their publishers.

Backward compatibility is the biggest exception
The old store’s closure did not remove every Xbox 360 game from sale. Microsoft continued selling supported Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles through the newer Microsoft Store on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox.com. However, backward compatibility is selective: it does not cover the entire Xbox 360 catalog.
Use the official Xbox backward-compatibility catalog to check a specific game. A title may be available digitally on a modern console, compatible only when using its original disc, available as a remaster or compilation, or unavailable because of licensing and other rights issues.
Playing an owned digital game on a newer Xbox
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that purchased the game.
- Open your library or the Microsoft Store on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
- Find the title among your owned games.
- Install the compatible version if it is offered.
An Xbox 360 purchase does not automatically include a remaster, remake, or separate modern edition. Confirm that the listing is the compatible version you want.
Using an Xbox 360 disc
Insert the original disc into a compatible Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S console. If the game is supported, the console can download its compatible game package. The disc normally must remain inserted because it acts as the ownership check. This does not work with every Xbox 360 game.

The Xbox Series S cannot use physical discs. Disc owners need an Xbox 360, Xbox One with a drive, or Xbox Series X for supported games.
Why DLC is harder to preserve
Downloadable content is often more vulnerable than the base game. Music-game song packs, licensed expansions, season passes, compatibility packs, online passes, and add-ons for delisted games may never have received a modern release.
If you bought DLC, Microsoft said it would remain available for redownload, subject to account access and service conditions. That is not the same as saying every unpurchased add-on remains obtainable, or that its online features will work indefinitely. A publisher can retire servers or lose the rights needed to distribute a game or its music independently of Microsoft’s storefront.

How to redownload an old purchase
- Sign in to the Xbox 360 with the account that made the purchase.
- Open the console’s account or system settings.
- Go to Download History or the equivalent previously purchased-content section.
- Select the game or add-on.
- Start the download again.
Legacy dashboard labels can vary by system version, region, and account state. Microsoft’s historical support guidance referenced Settings > Account > Download History. If an item is missing, check that you are using the original account and distinguish between a completed purchase, a subscription entitlement, a redeemed code, and content that was only installed on the console.
Redownloading also requires the relevant service to remain available. Keep local backups where the platform permits, but do not assume that an installed copy guarantees a permanent replacement for account-based access.
What the final discounts meant
Microsoft and retailers published several discount waves before the closure. Those promotions were temporary and varied by region, date, and title. Historical coverage included discounts on games such as BioShock, Mafia II, and Spec Ops: The Line, as well as backward-compatible games and DLC, but those prices should not be treated as current offers.

That buying window has now passed. For an unowned game in 2026, start with Microsoft’s current store and compatibility catalog. If it is not there, look for a legitimate physical copy, remaster, compilation, or official PC release. Avoid treating old Xbox 360 download codes as dependable purchases: Microsoft’s pre-closure guidance warned that Xbox 360 content codes needed to be redeemed before July 29, 2024. Microsoft’s guidance on codes and redownloads treated gift cards and subscription cards differently, but any old code should be verified directly before money changes hands.

- It did not guarantee permanent multiplayer. Publisher and developer servers determine whether online play still works.
- It did not make every Xbox 360 game backward-compatible. Compatibility is title-specific.
- It did not preserve every unpurchased DLC item. Delisted add-ons may have no replacement.
- It did not convert an Xbox 360 purchase into a remaster. Modern editions can be separate products.
- It did not make old codes reliable. Redemption status and regional restrictions still matter.
Bottom line for Xbox 360 owners
If you already bought a game or DLC, sign in to the original account and check Download History before assuming it is gone. If you want to play it on a newer console, verify the exact title in Microsoft’s backward-compatibility catalog. For games that were never made compatible, a working Xbox 360, a legitimate physical copy, or an official re-release may be the only practical option.
The Xbox 360 digital store is closed, but the fate of each game is different: some remain modern-store purchases, some survive only in existing libraries, and others require physical preservation.

No. The July 29, 2024 change closed the Xbox 360 purchasing storefronts. Multiplayer and other online features depend on whether each publisher still operates its game servers.

Can I still redownload Xbox 360 games I purchased?
Microsoft said previously purchased games and DLC would remain available for redownload. Sign in with the purchasing account and check the console’s Download History; account and service conditions still apply.
Can Xbox 360 discs work on Xbox Series X?
Only if the specific game is in Microsoft’s backward-compatibility catalog. The disc must generally remain inserted as the ownership check.
Can Xbox 360 discs work on Xbox Series S?
No. Xbox Series S has no disc drive, so it cannot use physical Xbox 360 discs.
