Infidelity’s fan-made port brings the original NES Metroid to the Super Nintendo, with reported save and visual enhancements plus optional MSU-1 features. It is not a Nintendo release, not Super Metroid, and not a game for the Super NES Classic Edition.
What Infidelity’s SNES port changes
Infidelity announced the completed port on November 30, 2023, saying it took “a little over 2 months” and included MSU-1 support. Time Extension reported that it became available on December 1, after a beta release in October. Time Extension’s launch report reproduces the developer’s announcement.
The reports describe several changes beyond moving the NES game to SNES:
- More animation and less flicker: Hackaday reports added animation frames, including Samus’s arm cannon staying consistent as she turns, and reduced sprite flicker.
- Save files: Time Extension says the port supports up to three named files. Its file-selection screen can show death count, collected energy tanks, and missile capacity. Hackaday describes a complete save system based on the Famicom Disk System version.
- Password option: Time Extension reports that the original password option remains. It also warns of an overwrite edge case if a player starts with a password and then saves, so take care when combining the two methods.
These are features described by the cited coverage, not results of independent testing. Hackaday’s report focuses on the visual and MSU-1 changes.

What MSU-1 adds
MSU-1 is an enhancement capability used by some SNES projects for expanded audio and other media. Hackaday reports that this port includes a menu, video intro sequences, and several soundtrack options: NES music remapped to SNES sound, an expanded Famicom Disk System version, a reimagined Metroid: Zero Mission sound, or an orchestral score. Those options are source-reported descriptions; they are not a guarantee of how every setup will present or play them.
How this relates to the official Metroid releases
This project ports the first Metroid, originally an NES game. Nintendo’s UK developer interview dates the European NES release to 1988 and the European release of Super Metroid to 1994; the latter is a separate, official SNES entry in the series. Nintendo also included Super Metroid in the Super NES Classic Edition lineup. Neither that console nor Nintendo’s release history makes Infidelity’s port an official Nintendo product. Nintendo’s interview provides the European release-history context, and Nintendo’s Super NES Classic Edition lineup lists its pre-installed games.

Playing it on original SNES hardware
Original-hardware playback may require an SNES flash cartridge that supports MSU-1. Project sd2snes firmware documentation explains MSU-1 behavior and cautions that software mishandling busy flags can glitch or crash if MSU-1 autosave is enabled. ConsoleMods describes the FXPak Pro, formerly SD2SNES, as an SNES flash cartridge with MSU-1 support. These general hardware references do not confirm that this particular port works on a specific cartridge, revision, or setup. Check the port’s own release instructions and current compatibility information before choosing hardware.
Project sd2snes firmware documentation and ConsoleMods’ SNES flash-cart reference explain the general MSU-1 and cartridge context; neither establishes compatibility with this build.

What to consider before choosing a version
The SNES port is relevant if you want to revisit the original game with reported save slots, visual adjustments, and MSU-1 presentation options. The NES version remains the original release, while Super Metroid is a different game rather than an updated version of the first one. Which version suits you depends on whether you value the original release or the reported additions—and, for the fan port, whether your intended setup is supported.
