Probably—but it has not been officially proved. Early launch-week reports claimed that Nintendo Switch 2 sold more than 3 million consoles worldwide in its first 24 hours. If that figure is accurate, it would exceed Sony’s documented result of more than 1 million PS4 consoles sold through in the first 24 hours in the United States and Canada.

The important qualification is that Nintendo never confirmed the alleged 3-million first-day figure. What Nintendo did officially announce was that Switch 2 sold more than 3.5 million units worldwide during its first four days after launching on June 5, 2025—its strongest comparable four-day hardware performance ever. That is a confirmed Nintendo record, but it is not the same as a confirmed all-console, worldwide 24-hour record.
What Nintendo officially confirmed
Nintendo Switch 2 launched worldwide on June 5, 2025. On June 11, Nintendo announced that the system had sold more than 3.5 million units worldwide in its first four days.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Nintendo described that result as the highest global sales level achieved by any Nintendo hardware during a comparable four-day period. On the evidence Nintendo released, that is the clearest record Switch 2 holds: the best four-day launch for Nintendo hardware worldwide.
That announcement does not reveal how many consoles sold on June 5 itself. A four-day total cannot establish a precise 24-hour total without a day-by-day breakdown. For example, 3.5 million units could have been distributed relatively evenly across the four days, or the launch day could have accounted for a much larger share.
Where the “3 million in 24 hours” claim came from
The more dramatic claim—that Switch 2 sold over 3 million units during its first 24 hours—came from unofficial reporting and was amplified by gaming-news coverage and social-media posts. It was not presented in a Nintendo financial release, and the underlying reporting did not provide a transparent third-party sales report that would allow the number to be independently checked.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe number is plausible in light of Nintendo’s confirmed four-day result, but plausibility is not verification. It is also not completely clear whether every reference to “sales” meant consumer sell-through, retailer shipments, a particular region, or a worldwide aggregate. Those measurements are not interchangeable:
- Sell-through generally means units purchased by consumers.
- Sell-in or shipments means units supplied to retailers or other sales channels, which may not yet have reached customers.
- Worldwide sales and regional sales cannot be compared as though they cover the same market.
The responsible conclusion is therefore: Switch 2 may have set an all-time 24-hour console-sales record, but the specific global claim remains unconfirmed.
How the result compares with the PS4
Sony officially reported that the PlayStation 4 sold more than 1 million units through in its first 24 hours after launching on November 15, 2013. That figure covered the United States and Canada.
If the unofficial claim of more than 3 million Switch 2 sales worldwide is correct, the raw number would be substantially higher than Sony’s PS4 figure. But this is not a perfectly like-for-like comparison:
| System | Period | Geography | Reported result | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | First 24 hours | Reported as worldwide, but unclear | More than 3 million | Unofficial and unconfirmed |
| PlayStation 4 | First 24 hours | United States and Canada | More than 1 million | Officially reported by Sony |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | First four days | Worldwide | More than 3.5 million | Officially confirmed by Nintendo |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Launch week ending June 7, 2025 | United States | More than 1.1 million | Reported from Circana tracking |
So it would be too broad to write that Nintendo officially confirmed Switch 2 had beaten every console ever in 24-hour sales. The evidence supports a narrower statement: unofficial reports suggest that it may have done so, while Nintendo officially confirmed a historic four-day result.
Switch 2 also set a U.S. launch-week record
There is a separate, better-documented U.S. milestone. Reporting on Circana analyst Mat Piscatella’s data, GamesRadar said that Switch 2 sold more than 1.1 million units in the United States during the week ending June 7, 2025.
That made it a new all-time U.S. launch-week unit-sales record for video-game hardware, surpassing the previous record associated with the PS4. This is useful supporting evidence for the scale of the launch, but it should not be relabeled as a worldwide 24-hour result. It covers one country, a week-long period, and a third-party tracking estimate rather than Nintendo’s global first-day total.

Why the launch was so large
Switch 2 succeeded the original Nintendo Switch with a familiar hybrid design while adding substantial hardware changes. The console can be used in handheld, tabletop, and TV modes, which broadens its appeal beyond a conventional living-room system.
Its main hardware features include:
- A 7.9-inch 1080p LCD display
- HDR10 support
- Variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz in compatible games
- 256GB of internal storage
- Wi-Fi 6
- Docked output of up to 4K with compatible games and television hardware
- A maximum of 60 frames per second at 4K
- Support for microSD Express expansion cards
The console launched with magnetically attaching Joy-Con 2 controllers. In compatible games, the controllers can also provide mouse-style controls. Nintendo introduced GameChat for voice chat and screen sharing; video chat requires a Nintendo Switch 2 Camera or a compatible USB-C camera. Internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online are required for online features where applicable.
The standard package includes the console, two Joy-Con 2 controllers, an AC adapter, a USB-C charging cable, the dock, a Joy-Con 2 grip, and two controller straps. Games are sold separately, so the headline console price does not represent the complete cost of starting a library.
What buyers should know about the hardware
Anyone considering the system behind these sales figures should pay attention to a few practical details. The Nintendo Switch 2 console is the central purchase, but storage and controller choices affect the ownership experience.
Storage requires the right card
Switch 2 requires a microSD Express card for Switch 2 for expandable game storage. Ordinary microSD cards used with the original Switch are not the correct solution for normal Switch 2 game-storage expansion. Buyers should check that a card is explicitly identified as microSD Express before purchasing it.
Alternative controllers and video chat
The included Joy-Con 2 controllers cover the basic handheld, tabletop, and TV use cases. Players who prefer a traditional gamepad for longer sessions may look at a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller. That is an optional accessory, not part of the standard console package.
GameChat voice features do not require a camera, but video chat does. Buyers who specifically want the video functions should look for the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera or a compatible USB-C camera, and should also account for the applicable online-service requirements.
Games helped turn interest into purchases
Hardware launch momentum depends heavily on software. Nintendo’s sales data identifies major Switch 2 products including Mario Kart World for Switch 2, Donkey Kong Bananza for Switch 2, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A Switch 2 Edition. Availability, packaging, and whether a particular release is physical or digital can vary by market, so buyers should verify the version sold in their region.
The included hardware also made the launch easier to understand for existing Switch owners: the system retains the hybrid concept and familiar Nintendo software ecosystem while offering a new screen, more storage, updated controllers, and stronger display capabilities. That combination can generate both first-time purchases and upgrades from the original Switch installed base.

How Switch 2 sales developed after launch
The launch was not a brief spike followed by an immediate collapse. Nintendo reported 19.86 million Switch 2 units sold worldwide during its fiscal year ending March 31, 2026. That exceeded Nintendo’s original 15-million-unit forecast and its revised 19-million-unit forecast for that fiscal year.

Nintendo subsequently reported another 3.82 million hardware units sold during the April–June 2026 quarter. That brought cumulative worldwide Switch 2 hardware sales to 23.68 million units as of June 30, 2026. Nintendo also reported 9.46 million Switch 2 software units for that April–June quarter.
Nintendo’s current fiscal 2027 forecast calls for an additional 16.5 million Switch 2 hardware units. These figures demonstrate sustained commercial momentum, but they do not settle what happened during the first 24 hours. A later cumulative total cannot retroactively verify an unreported day-one breakdown.
Final verdict: record likely, record confirmed?
Switch 2 unquestionably had an extraordinary launch. Nintendo confirmed the best comparable four-day global hardware result in its history, Circana tracking pointed to a record U.S. launch week, and later financial reports showed the system passing 23 million worldwide units by June 30, 2026.

But the headline claim needs a qualifier. The reported figure of more than 3 million consoles in 24 hours would likely have broken the PS4’s documented launch-day result if it represents worldwide consumer sales. Nintendo has not officially confirmed that number, however, and the geography and type of sales measurement behind the early reports are not sufficiently transparent.
The accurate version is: Nintendo Switch 2 may have broken the all-time record for consoles sold in 24 hours, but the officially confirmed record is Nintendo’s more than 3.5 million units sold worldwide in four days.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Nintendo confirm 3 million Switch 2 sales in one day?
No. Nintendo officially confirmed more than 3.5 million Switch 2 units sold worldwide during the first four days after launch, not more than 3 million in the first 24 hours.
Did Switch 2 break the all-time 24-hour console-sales record?
It may have, if the unofficial reports of more than 3 million worldwide first-day sales are accurate. However, the claim has not been confirmed by Nintendo or a transparent third-party global tracker.

Sony reported more than 1 million PS4 units sold through in the first 24 hours in the United States and Canada. Switch 2’s alleged figure was generally described as worldwide, so the two results do not have identical geographic coverage.
How many Switch 2 consoles had been sold by June 2026?
Nintendo reported 23.68 million Switch 2 hardware units sold worldwide as of June 30, 2026. That later cumulative figure confirms strong ongoing sales but does not prove the exact first-day total.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The 24-hour record claim is possible but unverified. Nintendo officially confirmed that Switch 2 sold more than 3.5 million units worldwide in its first four days, while Circana data indicated a record U.S. launch week. Do not present the alleged 3-million first-day global figure as a confirmed fact.
