The 2026 Steam Controller is Valve’s second attempt to make PC gaming from a couch feel natural. It combines two conventional thumbsticks and a familiar gamepad layout with the original controller’s dual haptic trackpads, plus gyro aiming, four rear buttons, capacitive controls, and Steam Input customization.

The result is a Steam-native hybrid rather than a straightforward Xbox-style pad: more approachable than the 2015 model, more flexible than a conventional controller, and still dependent on Steam for its best features.

The short verdict

Valve’s second-generation Steam Controller is a much more approachable version of the original idea. It keeps the two large haptic trackpads that made the 2015 controller unusual, but adds two conventional thumbsticks, a familiar ABXY layout, rear grip buttons, gyro aiming, and the mature Steam Input software that grew alongside Steam Deck.

That combination makes the Valve Steam Controller a compelling couch-gaming tool for Steam users who sometimes need a mouse, extra inputs, or precise remapping but do not want to sit at a desk. It is not simply a premium Xbox-style gamepad, however. Its advantages depend on using the trackpads, motion controls, rear buttons, or custom Steam Input layouts. For someone who only wants ordinary thumbsticks and plug-and-play compatibility across every PC launcher, a cheaper conventional controller remains the better buy.

What is new about the 2026 Steam Controller?

Valve announced the new Steam Controller, Steam Machine, and Steam Frame on November 12, 2025. The standalone controller launched on May 4, 2026, with launch pricing of $99 in the United States, £85 in the United Kingdom, and AU$149 in Australia. Availability and pricing can change by region, so those figures should be treated as launch reference points rather than a permanent global price.

The controller is sold separately and can also be bundled with the Steam Machine. The Steam Machine and Steam Frame are separate products; their availability, pricing, and schedule should not be inferred from the controller’s standalone launch.

The central redesign is simple to describe: Valve has added the controls people expect from a normal console controller without abandoning the mouse-like controls that defined the first Steam Controller.

Control or feature What it adds
Two conventional thumbsticks Standard movement and camera control for controller-first games, with TMR sensing rather than traditional potentiometers.
Two angled haptic trackpads Mouse-style pointing, scrolling, radial menus, virtual trackballs, and other Steam Input actions.
ABXY buttons and D-pad A familiar layout for games designed around Xbox-style controls.
Analog triggers and shoulder bumpers Normal driving, shooting, and gamepad functions.
Four rear grip buttons Extra assignable inputs without removing the thumbs from the sticks or trackpads.
Six-axis motion sensor Gyro aiming, cursor correction, steering, and other motion-based actions.
Grip Sense and capacitive thumbstick sensing Actions can respond to whether the player is touching or releasing a grip or stick.
Four haptic motors Two motors in the grips and two associated with the trackpads provide tactile feedback beyond ordinary rumble.

The trackpads are still the point

The trackpads are not decorative additions to a conventional pad. They are the feature that gives the Steam Controller a reason to exist alongside less expensive gamepads.

Steam Input can turn a trackpad into a mouse surface, a scroll wheel, a radial menu, a virtual button cluster, or a context-sensitive control. A strategy game can use one pad for cursor movement and the other for camera panning. A role-playing game can use a radial menu for abilities or inventory items. Desktop navigation can feel substantially more manageable from a sofa because the player does not need to reach for a separate mouse.

Valve canted the pads rather than mounting them completely flat. The company told Tom’s Hardware that the angle came from extensive experimentation intended to make thumb access more comfortable. The result is still unlike a conventional controller, but the physical design is less alien than the first-generation model.

The trackpads also support nuanced haptics. Reporting suggests the hardware can produce unusual audio-like tactile effects, although that is better treated as an interesting technical flourish than as a reason to buy the controller.

A familiar gamepad underneath the unusual controls

The original Steam Controller replaced one of the thumbsticks with a trackpad and used a distinctive body shape. That gave it remarkable flexibility, but it also meant that players had to learn a layout that did not resemble an Xbox or PlayStation pad.

  • 【Responsive Touch & Enhanced Connectivity】 Enjoy a vastly improved touchscreen with higher fidelity and faster haptics. We’ve added a dedicated Bluetooth antenna to improve connections for multiple controllers. Whether using the built-in trackpads or the included external controller, this allows for precision play in everything from FPS to complex strategy games.

The new model uses two thumbsticks in a symmetrical, PlayStation-like arrangement while retaining the trackpads. It therefore supports a conventional control scheme when a game calls for one, then exposes additional options when a game benefits from mouse input, gyro, radial menus, or rear buttons.

This is a significant compatibility improvement over the 2015 model. A player can launch a controller-first action game and use the sticks and triggers normally. The same player can then switch to a trackpad-and-gyro configuration for a strategy game or a mouse-heavy RPG without changing hardware.

TMR sticks and capacitive controls

The thumbsticks use tunneling magnetoresistance, or TMR, sensing. Unlike conventional potentiometer sticks, TMR sensors do not rely on the same contact-based mechanism. Valve presents the design as a way to improve responsiveness, reduce power consumption, and lower the likelihood of traditional stick drift.

Valve has also suggested that the sticks may work with substantially smaller dead zones. That could make small aiming adjustments feel more immediate, but it remains a design claim rather than a long-term durability guarantee. No stick technology should be described as proof that drift is impossible, particularly before years of widespread use have produced meaningful reliability data.

The controller adds capacitive sensing to the grips and thumbsticks. Valve calls the grip feature Grip Sense. It can trigger or modify an action depending on whether the player is holding the grip, touching a stick, or releasing contact.

One demonstrated use case combined these systems: releasing the grip could activate gyro aiming or cursor movement. In practice, that makes it possible to use a stick for broad movement, a trackpad or mouse emulation for larger corrections, and motion input for fine adjustment. The value will depend on how well a player is willing to tune the configuration, but the idea is considerably more flexible than a standard two-stick layout.

How it feels in the hands

Early hands-on reports generally describe the redesigned controller as comfortable despite its relatively large footprint. PC Gamer reported that it rested comfortably in the hands and that a user with smaller hands could reach both the sticks and trackpads. Tom’s Hardware described it as neither excessively bulky nor unusually heavy during a brief demonstration.

That does not mean it feels exactly like a standard gamepad. The trackpads occupy space where some players instinctively expect their thumbs to rest, so the most natural grip may take adjustment. WIRED reported needing to change its grip to reach the sticks comfortably and found the glossy D-pad adequate but not especially grippy.

The fair conclusion is that Valve has made the controller more approachable, not conventional. Players who dislike touch surfaces or who want the familiar feel of a DualSense or Xbox controller may still find the layout busy. Players who want more options under each thumb may consider that same complexity the main attraction.

Those are sample-specific observations and should not be treated as evidence of a verified defect rate.

Where it performs best

The controller’s strongest scenario is relaxed PC gaming from a couch or television. It addresses the awkward middle ground where a normal gamepad is comfortable but insufficient, while a mouse and keyboard are capable but inconvenient.

  • Strategy and simulation games: A trackpad can provide cursor control, while radial menus and rear buttons can make frequently used commands easier to reach.
  • RPGs: Mouse-like menus, inventory navigation, ability wheels, and gyro-assisted cursor movement can reduce the friction of playing from a sofa.
  • Desktop and launcher navigation: The trackpads can substitute for a basic mouse when browsing Steam or navigating a television-connected PC.
  • Controller-first games: The two sticks, triggers, face buttons, and D-pad support a conventional layout without requiring the player to use the advanced features.
  • Mixed-input games: A player can combine sticks, trackpads, gyro, and rear buttons instead of choosing one input method for the entire game.

Hands-on reporting found the combination agile enough for most games and particularly useful for strategy and RPG play. The important qualification is precision. The controller is intended to provide approximately mouse-like control in a comfortable couch setup, not to outperform a dedicated mouse and keyboard in competitive first-person shooters.

For competitive esports, a specialist controller with a simpler, highly consistent layout may be preferable. The Steam Controller’s strength is adaptability and convenience rather than tournament-focused ergonomics.

Steam Input is essential, not optional

The hardware makes the most sense inside Steam’s software environment. Steam Input lets users remap every major control, assign different functions to the trackpads and rear buttons, configure gyro behavior, create action layers, and use community-created layouts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Steam Deck connection is particularly important. Because the controller shares much of the Deck’s input vocabulary, Steam Deck configurations can often provide a useful starting point for the new pad. That does not mean every layout will work perfectly without changes. A game may need different sensitivity, dead-zone, trackpad, gyro, or rear-button settings on a full-size controller.

A practical first setup

  1. Connect the Puck or a USB cable. The included Steam Controller Puck is the preferred wireless receiver for a PC or television setup. It connects to the host over USB. A direct USB connection is also available.
  2. Pair the controller. The Puck uses Valve’s proprietary wireless connection. The controller can also use Bluetooth when appropriate, but Bluetooth should not be assumed to provide the same experience on every device.
  3. Update firmware if Steam offers an update. Firmware, pairing, Bluetooth, macOS permissions, Steam Link, and troubleshooting are handled through Steam’s controller support tools.
  4. Open the game’s controller layout screen. Start with the default configuration for a controller-first game, or browse community layouts for a game that needs mouse or keyboard emulation.
  5. Tune one input at a time. Adjust trackpad sensitivity, gyro activation, dead zones, and rear-button assignments separately. Trying to redesign every control at once makes it harder to identify what feels wrong.
  6. Save a personal layout. A community configuration may be a good starting point, but a personal copy makes it possible to adjust controls without losing the original.

Non-Steam games can be added through Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library and then configured through Steam Input. This is useful, but it is not identical to native Steam integration. Launchers, overlays, elevated permissions, anti-cheat systems, and games that open through another application can all affect whether Steam Input takes control successfully.

Compatibility: excellent in Steam, less predictable elsewhere

The Steam Controller is designed primarily for Steam on Windows, macOS, Linux, SteamOS, Steam Deck, PC gaming handhelds, and Steam Link-connected iOS or Android devices. The phrase “designed primarily” matters: a Bluetooth connection alone does not guarantee that a game or cloud-gaming application will expose the controller’s full functionality.

Use case What to expect
Steam games on Windows, macOS, Linux, or SteamOS The intended environment, with the broadest access to Steam Input, layouts, remapping, trackpads, gyro, and rear buttons.
Steam Deck or another SteamOS-oriented handheld A natural pairing. Existing Deck-style configurations may be reusable, although individual games can require tuning.
Non-Steam games added to the Steam Library Often workable through Steam Input, but launcher behavior and game-specific software can introduce setup problems.
Steam Link Supported as part of the Steam ecosystem. PC Gamer reported successful use over a local connection.
Xbox app, PC Game Pass, Epic Games Store, and other launchers Not a seamless, universal experience. Routing a game through Steam may help, but compatibility should be checked for the specific game and launcher.
Cloud gaming Do not assume support merely because Bluetooth pairing succeeds. WIRED reported a review unit connecting over Bluetooth to an iPhone but not being recognized in-game through GeForce Now.

This is the largest practical limitation. The controller is not a generic Bluetooth pad that happens to have extra features. It is a Steam-native control system whose best features depend on Steam Input being present and active.

Wireless connection, the Puck, and battery life

The included Steam Controller Puck is both a wireless receiver and a charging accessory. It plugs into the host device by USB, uses Valve’s proprietary wireless protocol, and has pogo-pin contacts that let it attach to the back of the controller as a small charging dock.

Valve says the wireless connection is more stable than Bluetooth. WIRED found setup easy and reported no discernible latency through the Puck on its review unit. That is encouraging for television and couch setups, although it should not be treated as an independently standardized latency benchmark.

One Puck can pair with up to four controllers. That makes the receiver more useful for local multiplayer than a one-controller-only dongle. The controller can also be used over Bluetooth or directly by USB when the Puck is not the right option.

Valve estimates at least 35 hours of playtime from the rechargeable battery. That is a manufacturer estimate rather than an independently measured endurance result. Actual runtime will depend on haptic intensity, wireless mode, motion sensing, and other settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Puck and charging cable are included with the controller. The Puck is not a required separate purchase, although a replacement cable, spare receiver, or additional charging arrangement could become useful if Valve or third-party accessory availability develops.

Repairability and the accessory question

A PC Gamer teardown found that the controller could be disassembled with a small set of tools, including Torx bits, a spudger, and tweezers. That is a positive sign for maintenance, but disassembly is not the same as officially supported repair. Opening a controller can damage clips, cables, seals, or other parts, and should be attempted only by someone comfortable with small electronics.

Valve reportedly planned to offer official Steam Controller replacement parts through iFixit after launch, following the company’s Steam Deck repair-parts approach. Availability, exact inventory, regional shipping, and any partner or affiliate program should be verified before treating those parts as currently purchasable.

Valve also released CAD files for the controller and Puck under a Creative Commons license. That gives makers a useful foundation for stands, docks, cable-management parts, shells, and other accessories. It does not mean that every 3D-printed or marketplace product is official, tested, or guaranteed to fit. A future Steam Controller stand, case, dock, or shell could be useful, but product-level compatibility should be checked carefully before buying.

How it compares with the original Steam Controller

2015 Steam Controller 2026 Steam Controller
Basic layout Unusual layout centered on trackpads, with one conventional stick. Two conventional sticks plus two trackpads.
Learning curve High; even ordinary games felt different from a standard console pad. Lower; conventional controls work when advanced features are unnecessary.
PC-focused controls Trackpad mouse emulation and extensive Steam Input customization. The same broad ambition, strengthened by Steam Deck-era software and control profiles.
Extra inputs Customizable controls, but not the same four-button rear-grip arrangement described for the new model. Four assignable rear buttons, gyro, Grip Sense, capacitive sticks, and expanded input combinations.
Main barrier Its unconventional layout could make mainstream adoption difficult. Its remaining barrier is complexity and Steam dependence rather than a lack of familiar controls.

The new model is best understood as a second attempt at the original mission rather than a simple revision. The 2015 controller tried to make a television and a Steam library work without requiring a mouse and keyboard. The 2026 model keeps that ambition but reduces the cost of entry by adding a normal gamepad foundation.

Steam Deck also changes the context. Valve has spent years refining trackpads, gyro, haptics, rear buttons, and configurable control profiles in a product many players already understand. The new controller brings much of that control vocabulary back to a larger screen and a separate PC setup.

Who should buy it?

It is a strong fit if you:

  • Play most of your games through Steam.
  • Want to use a gaming PC from a couch or television.
  • Play strategy, simulation, RPG, management, or mixed-input games.
  • Need mouse-like cursor control without keeping a mouse beside you.
  • Want gyro aiming, four rear buttons, radial menus, or deep remapping.
  • Already own a Steam Deck and appreciate its control configurations.
  • Plan to use Steam Link, SteamOS, or a Steam Machine-style living-room setup.

It is a weaker fit if you:

  • Mainly play through the Xbox app, PC Game Pass, Epic Games Store, or other launchers without routing games through Steam.
  • Want a simple controller that works consistently without configuration.
  • Dislike touchpads, gyro controls, or experimenting with input layouts.
  • Prioritize competitive esports ergonomics over flexibility.
  • Need broad native compatibility with consoles or arbitrary Bluetooth devices.
  • Will use only the ordinary sticks, buttons, triggers, and D-pad.

Is $99 worth it?

At its $99 US launch price, the Steam Controller costs more than many competent PC gamepads but less than numerous premium pro controllers. The price is easiest to justify when the buyer will regularly use at least one of its defining features: trackpad mouse control, gyro aiming, rear buttons, advanced haptics, or Steam Input layouts.

If all you need is a conventional controller for platformers, sports games, action games, or local multiplayer, a cheaper pad may offer better value and a simpler experience. If you frequently switch between controller-first games and PC-native games, the extra hardware can replace the need to keep a gamepad and mouse within reach of the sofa.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most sensible buying test is not whether the controller has more buttons than another pad. It is whether your Steam library contains games that a normal controller makes awkward and whether you are willing to spend a few minutes configuring them.

Final assessment

Valve has not abandoned the original Steam Controller concept. It has made the concept easier to understand. The second-generation model offers the familiar controls needed for ordinary games, then adds a trackpad-and-gyro layer for the games that do not fit neatly into a console control scheme.

That makes it one of the more interesting PC controllers available for Steam-focused living-room play. The trade-off is equally clear: its best features are software-dependent, its layout remains more complex than a conventional pad, and its TMR and battery claims still need long-term real-world validation.

For the right Steam user, the 2026 Steam Controller is not merely another gamepad. It is a compact bridge between a controller, a mouse, a Steam Deck, and a living-room PC. For everyone else, its extra flexibility may be expensive complexity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the 2026 Steam Controller work with non-Steam games?

Yes, but it is designed around Steam Input. Non-Steam games can be added through Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library, then configured through Steam. Results can vary with launchers, overlays, anti-cheat systems, and games that open through another application.

Do you have to buy the Steam Controller Puck separately?

No. The included Puck is the primary wireless receiver and also works as a charging dock. The controller can additionally connect by Bluetooth or direct USB, but the Puck is included rather than a required separate purchase.

Will the TMR thumbsticks prevent stick drift?

TMR sensing is intended to reduce the likelihood of conventional potentiometer-style drift and may allow smaller dead zones, according to Valve. It should not be described as a guarantee against drift or as proof of long-term reliability before extended real-world use.

Who should buy the new Steam Controller?

The controller is a good fit for Steam users who play from a couch and want mouse-like cursor control, gyro aiming, rear buttons, or extensive remapping. It is less suitable for people who want a simple conventional pad, competitive esports ergonomics, or seamless support across every PC launcher and cloud-gaming service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy the 2026 Steam Controller for Steam-first couch gaming, especially if you want trackpad mouse control, gyro, rear buttons, and deep Steam Input customization. Skip it in favor of a simpler pad if you mainly need conventional controls or launcher-agnostic compatibility.
