Mega Cat Studios did not recover the original source code for Backyard Baseball ’97. The archival materials supplied to the team were missing it, so the developers started with a copy of the game disc, examined and modified the surviving game assets and scripts, and built compatibility work to help the original game run on modern systems. The enhanced 1997 game was released in 2024; it is separate from the newer Backyard Baseball game listed in Mega Cat’s 2026 press kit.
What was missing—and what the team had instead
Playground Productions, which obtained the rights to the Backyard Sports games, sent Mega Cat Studios a large collection of archival materials, including Zip disks, files and CD-ROMs. But the original source code was missing for the games the team was trying to work on. Engineer Luke Usher recalled, “I noticed that the source code was missing for the games that we were trying to work with.” TechCrunch reported the account on October 13, 2024.

For Backyard Baseball ’97, the starting point was a copy of the original game disc. That distinction matters: a disc contains a playable build and game data, not the original editable development project. The team could inspect and alter surviving material and make new compatibility software, but it did not retrieve the missing source code.
How the team worked from the disc
Fan expertise helped make the game legible
Mega Cat founder James Deighan and Usher connected with John Simon, a fan and modder who had already investigated the series. His familiarity with the game and its internals helped the team inspect its assets and scripts.

- 2 Player head to head tournament mode
- Fully Customizable teams - Players, uniforms, and team logos
- 20 Unique Teams filled with characters with unique stats, strengths, and weaknesses
- Cinematic Events with intense interactive elements for constant excitement
The game used SCUMM, an engine associated with LucasArts adventure games. Simon remarked, “Somehow the Humongous developers back in the 90s, they built a 3D game inside of this 2D game engine.” The comment captures the unusual technical challenge of adapting an engine associated with adventures for a sports game.
ScummVM helped modify assets and scripts
Simon used ScummVM, an open-source interpreter, to modify the game’s assets and scripts. That work operated on surviving game material; it was not a reconstruction of the original source code.

A separate framework handled compatibility
Usher described a separate engineering effort: Mega Cat built a framework that takes control before the game starts, applies patches and changes, fixes bugs, and connects the game to Steam. That is the reported description of the approach, not a published low-level architecture specification. Together, the disc, analysis and modification of the game, and compatibility code let the team enhance the original release for modern systems.
Why the remaster kept the original game intact
The developers considered whether to make a game designed for children harder for adults returning with nostalgic memories. Their reported choice was to keep the original game true to its roots and add Steam achievements for players seeking an extra challenge.

Deighan described the broader aim as preserving the game while adding ways to replay and play collaboratively: “We very much believe in preservation. Our emphasis was more around, what can we do that allows that digital preservation to stand alone, while also having all these other replayability and collaborative features added in?” The quote was reported by TechCrunch in its October 13, 2024 interview.

Mega Cat’s press kit identifies Backyard Baseball ’97 as the original 1997 game enhanced to run on modern systems. It lists an October 10, 2024 release, Playground Productions as publisher, Mega Cat Studios and Humongous Entertainment as developers, and Steam, Google Play and the Apple App Store as platforms. Mega Cat Studios’ Backyard Baseball ’97 press kit supplies those release details.

A separate Backyard Baseball press kit describes a newer game, with a listed release date of July 9, 2026. It lists Steam, PlayStation and Xbox, with Nintendo Switch marked TBA, and describes 30 characters, 24 teams, six game modes and 11 remastered stadiums. Those details belong to the newer game, not the 1997 remaster. See Mega Cat Studios’ separate Backyard Baseball press kit.
