Dressmaker began with a personal question: how could Sabrina Becker stay connected to dressmaking after a medical condition affected her plans to pursue costume design? Her partner, lead developer Jonathan Hau-Yoon, turned that question into a cozy simulation about designing and making garments. The story is a reported inspiration for the game—not a claim that it treats or recreates a medical condition.
What inspired Dressmaker?
Hau-Yoon conceived Dressmaker as a way for Becker to continue enjoying the creative side of dressmaking after her health affected how she had planned to pursue the craft. Becker has described sewing as part of her life since childhood. In an August 2026 interview with The Guardian, she said: “I grew up sewing with my mom, so Dressmaker has been a really lovely way for me to reconnect with that.”
The Guardian reported that Becker’s hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome affected her plans for costume design. That context helps explain the project’s personal significance, but the game should not be read as a medical intervention or as a simulation of living with the condition. Its focus is the creative process of making clothes.
How did the idea become a game?
The Guardian’s account describes the project growing out of Becker and Hau-Yoon’s conversations about dressmaking decisions, including how pattern pieces fit onto available fabric and why grain line matters. Hau-Yoon made a concept video, then worked with colleagues on a rough prototype. The prototype helped attract attention and persuade Free Lives founder Evan Greenwood to support the project.

The Guardian reported that the concept video received hundreds of thousands of views and that the prototype was downloaded about 30,000 times. Those are figures attributed to the outlet’s 2026 feature, not audited sales or player totals. Another 2026 report gave different figures, so they should not be combined into a single estimate.

Dressmaker is a cozy dressmaking simulation developed by Cozy Lives and published by Free Lives. The game released on Steam on September 21, 2026. Its Steam listing describes a loop of choosing fabric, cutting patterns, sewing garments and decorating finished pieces.

Free Lives’ official press kit adds that players can design garments, preview patterns on a mannequin and fulfill commissions for townspeople. The game turns dressmaking decisions into digital play; it does not claim to reproduce every physical aspect of sewing. Free Lives also says prior dressmaking knowledge is not required.

Cozy Lives is the developer, and Free Lives is the publisher, according to the official Steam listing and press kit. The press kit credits Becker as a design and dressmaking expert and Hau-Yoon with art lead and design responsibilities. The personal origin and the finished game meet in its emphasis on creative choices: players can explore clothing design without needing to sew in real life.
