Spoilers for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s main quest “The Play’s the Thing.” For the best line-performance result, choose the timed dialogue options beginning “To slay beasts most foul,” “Perhaps ’midst the guests,” “Seems men’s hearts,” “But a base heart,” and “No monster is he.” Choose comedy to avoid a fight after the play; choose drama if you want the combat aftermath. The walkthrough below covers the preparations, casting rewards, and performance results.
What to choose for the five correct lines
During the performance, select the timed dialogue option matching each opening phrase, in this order:
- “To slay beasts most foul”
- “Perhaps ’midst the guests”
- “Seems men’s hearts”
- “But a base heart”
- “No monster is he”
The fourth line may appear with slightly different wording, such as “But a heart that is base.” Match the option with that opening. If you are comparing the choices with the script’s delivery directions, the intended moods are cheerful or bold, intense or lively, joyful, disgusted, and ceremonial, respectively. The same five choices work whether you staged a comedy or a drama.
How to complete The Play’s the Thing
Geralt and Priscilla put on a play to draw the doppler Dudu out of hiding. They need his help with the effort to free Dandelion.

Write the play with Priscilla
Tell Priscilla what you have learned about Dudu and work with her on a script meant to signal that he can safely come forward. The title you choose changes the title printed on the script; it does not change the five correct performance lines. You will also decide whether the play is a comedy or a drama, which affects what happens after the performance.
Take the script to Irina
Bring the script to Madame Irina Renarde at her troupe’s theater. Before the show, she asks Geralt to arrange ushers and promote the performance.
Hire the ushers and decide whether to recruit the Puffins
Hiring the dockside strongmen as ushers is required to proceed. You can pay them or settle their wager by winning the fistfight.

Recruiting the Puffins is optional. If you resolve their trouble with a gang, they publicize the play, earning additional experience and crowns. The encounter ends in a fight whichever of the listed approaches you choose; using Axii is described as a way to gain extra experience. Skip this side objective if you do not want the extra preparation and confrontation.

Choose the cast
Geralt takes the Witcher role. For the princess, choose Priscilla rather than Irina if you want the higher listed crown reward. For the prince, Abelard is the rewarding choice; Maxim has no listed bonus.
| Role | Choice | Listed reward |
|---|---|---|
| Princess | Priscilla | 25 XP and 20 crowns |
| Princess | Irina | 25 XP and 10 crowns |
| Prince | Abelard | 110 XP and 30 crowns |
| Prince | Maxim | No bonus listed |
Perform the play
Choose the five matching lines listed above when their timed options appear. Your line accuracy determines a separate performance reward. The script can be staged as either comedy or drama without changing which lines count as correct.

Comedy or drama: which should you choose?
Choose based on whether you want a fight after the show:
- Comedy: the audience does not turn hostile, so the performance ends without an audience fight.
- Drama or melodrama: hostile audience members react after the performance, leading to combat.
This choice changes the aftermath, not the correct dialogue lines.
