The comedy does not erase the murder mystery’s darker subject matter; it gives the investigation a playful voice while the art supplies atmosphere.
Why the humor and art fit together
Pocket Gamer writer Stephen Gregson-Wood describes the story as funny and says the game pokes fun at itself rather than treating its serious crime with unbroken solemnity. That is a critical impression, not an objective measure of how funny every player will find it. The tone is also consistent with the game’s official Steam description, which calls it “satirical, witty, and dark.”
The setting gives that wit a strong visual counterpoint. The Steam description places the investigation in a hand-drawn 1937 Rio de Janeiro, a stylized noir city described by the developer as full of “style, sarcasm, and atmosphere.” The combination can make the world feel both moody and knowingly playful: the art establishes a crime-story frame, while the writing is willing to undercut its own seriousness.
That tonal mix is not the same as a purely lighthearted adventure. Steam’s content notice mentions murder, death, mental and physical illness, and incorrect forms of treatment. Some characters drink and smoke. The listing says the material is not graphic, but does not recommend the game for children.

What you do in The Posthumous Investigation
The Posthumous Investigation is a single-player adventure from Brazilian studio Mother Gaia Studio, published by CriticalLeap and Infini Fun. Its central premise is as strange as its title suggests: a dead man hires you to investigate his own murder.
You have one day to investigate 14 suspects. Learn their routines, observe what they do, and look for contradictions. When the day resets, carry what you have learned into another attempt. The Thinking Board lets you connect evidence and reconstruct a timeline before you accuse someone. That repeating structure makes observation and deduction the core of the experience, with the comedy and art shaping how the mystery feels rather than replacing its investigative challenge.
