Sony sells it as an all-digital console, although you can add the compatible detachable Disc Drive separately. The often-quoted $699.99 price was the U.S. launch MSRP in 2024; Sony’s current U.S. MSRP is $899.99, effective April 2, 2026.

Can the PS5 Pro play physical games?
Yes, but not as purchased. You must install the separately sold Disc Drive first. Once fitted, the PS5 Pro can read compatible PS5 and PS4 game discs and play Blu-ray and DVD movies. A drive is also necessary if you want to buy used discs, lend games, resell them, or share physical games between consoles.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
Without the drive, games must be downloaded through the PlayStation Store or accessed through other digital means. Installing the accessory does not create a separate “disc edition” of the Pro; it remains a PS5 Pro with an added drive.
Sony warns that a small number of PS4 games are not compatible with PS5 Pro, so the drive does not guarantee that every PS4 disc will work. A disc can also still require installation, updates, an account, or other licensing checks.
How much does a disc-playing PS5 Pro cost?
The $700 figure refers to the original U.S. launch price. Sony announced the PS5 Pro at $699.99 on September 10, 2024, ahead of its November 7, 2024 launch. That price included the 2TB console, one DualSense controller, and Astro’s Playroom—but no Disc Drive. (Sony’s launch announcement)

Sony later announced a U.S. PS5 Pro MSRP of $899.99, effective April 2, 2026. PlayStation Direct displayed the console at $899 when checked on August 18, 2026. The official Disc Drive was displayed at $79, producing this approximate U.S. pre-tax total:
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| PS5 Pro, 2TB | $899.99 official MSRP |
| Official Disc Drive | $79.00 displayed price |
| Console plus Disc Drive | About $978 |
| Optional vertical stand | $29.00 displayed price |
| Console, drive, and stand | About $1,007 |
These are U.S. prices, with the accessory and store-display figures checked August 18, 2026. Retailer pricing, promotions, availability, and regional prices may differ. Sony’s price-change announcement is available here, while PlayStation Direct lists the Disc Drive and vertical stand.

Does the Disc Drive work offline?
Not entirely during initial setup. Sony says an internet connection is required to pair the Disc Drive with the PS5 Pro, and a system software update may also be required. That matters if you have limited broadband, a data cap, or plan to set up the console somewhere without internet access.
Sony’s stated requirement concerns pairing and setup. It does not say that the console must remain online every time you play a disc or watch an offline movie.
Who should buy the drive?
| Buyer | Best choice |
|---|---|
| Large PS4 or PS5 disc library | Add the Disc Drive, or compare the total cost with a standard disc-equipped PS5. |
| Used-game buyer, trader, or reseller | Add the Disc Drive. |
| Blu-ray or DVD owner | Add the Disc Drive. |
| Fully digital player | Skip the drive unless your needs change. |
| Owner of another disc-equipped PS5 | You may not need a drive for the Pro. |
| Buyer with unreliable internet | Plan for the required online pairing before relying on physical media. |
Should you buy a standard PS5 instead?
For physical-media buyers, the standard disc-equipped PS5 can offer a lower total cost. PlayStation Direct displayed the standard 1TB PS5 at $649, compared with $899 for the Pro, while Sony’s stated U.S. recommended prices were $649.99 and $899.99 respectively. The standard PS5 product page confirms that this configuration includes a disc drive.
The standard PS5 is the more straightforward choice if physical games matter more to you than the Pro’s enhanced graphics features. The PS5 Pro is aimed at buyers who specifically want its improved rendering and ray-tracing capabilities, along with 2TB of storage. Its enhancements vary by game, however, and a small or lower-spec display may make the visual difference harder to justify.
Digital-only buyers can also compare the Pro with the 825GB PS5 Digital Edition, which PlayStation Direct displayed at $599. The cheaper model does not offer the Pro’s enhanced hardware or 2TB internal storage.
Quick Recap
Things to check before buying
- Do not assume the drive is bundled: it is not listed in the Pro’s box contents.
- Use the correct accessory: confirm that the Disc Drive listing explicitly supports the PS5 Pro and the current PS5 Digital Edition/slim-console family.
- Budget the real price: physical-media use means adding the drive’s cost to the console, not treating it as included value.
- Remember the stand: horizontal feet are included; the vertical stand costs extra.
- Check your games: PS5 Pro enhancements vary by title, and Sony excludes a small number of PS4 games from compatibility.
- Plan initial setup: internet pairing and possibly a system update are required for the drive.
