The August 29, 2024 PS5 Pro leak got the most important prediction right: Sony revealed the console during the first half of September. The leak also broadly anticipated its white-and-black design, disc-less configuration and bundled controller. But the sketch was not an official product image, and Sony’s announcement—not the leak—established the final price, specifications and launch details.
What the original PS5 Pro leak claimed
Dealabs user billbil-kun claimed that Sony planned to announce a console called PS5 Pro during the first half of September 2024. The report was published on August 29, when Sony had not confirmed the console or its existence publicly.

The leaker reportedly had access to an image of final packaging but could not publish it. Instead, the report included a hand-drawn sketch representing the alleged design. According to the leak, the console would have:
- A white exterior with the familiar black center section.
- Three black horizontal strips across the middle.
- A body larger than the PS5 Slim.
- No integrated disc drive.
- Compatibility with Sony’s detachable PS5 Disc Drive.
- A standard DualSense controller in the box, rather than a premium DualSense Edge.
Those details were presented as claims, not confirmed specifications. Even a leaker with a strong record can receive outdated information or see Sony change its plans before launch. The appropriate description at the time was an unofficial design sketch based on alleged packaging imagery—not an official render or confirmed product photograph.

Tom’s Guide’s original report also distinguished the source’s track record from the quality of the evidence. Previous accurate PlayStation Plus leaks made billbil-kun worth watching, but they did not turn every new claim into fact.
Did the reveal prediction come true?
Yes, although the leak predicted a window rather than an exact date.
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| August 29, 2024 | The leak claimed Sony would reveal PS5 Pro during the first half of September. |
| September 10, 2024 | Sony officially announced PS5 Pro. |
| September 26, 2024 | Direct PlayStation preorders began in relevant territories. |
| October 10, 2024 | Preorders opened at other participating retailers. |
| November 7, 2024 | PS5 Pro launched worldwide. |
September 10 fell within the leak’s predicted first-half window. That makes the timing claim substantially accurate, but it would be incorrect to say the leak identified Sony’s exact announcement date.

Leak versus reality
| Leak claim | What Sony later confirmed | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| The console would be called PS5 Pro. | Sony officially announced the PlayStation 5 Pro. | Confirmed |
| Sony would reveal it in the first half of September. | The announcement took place on September 10, 2024. | Confirmed in timing |
| It would use a white-and-black PS5-family design. | Official images showed the same broad design language. | Broadly confirmed |
| Three black strips would cross the center. | The final console showed a related visual treatment. | Directionally accurate, but not an official technical specification |
| It would be thicker than PS5 Slim. | Sony’s final dimensions were consistent with that general comparison. | Broadly consistent |
| There would be no built-in disc drive. | PS5 Pro launched as an all-digital console with a separate Disc Drive option. | Confirmed |
| A standard DualSense would be included. | Sony listed a DualSense wireless controller in the package. | Confirmed |
The design sketch was therefore unusually close in concept, but “complete match” would overstate the evidence. Sony later described PS5 Pro as the same height as the original PS5 and the same width as the current PS5 model. The leak’s sketch should be treated as a broad preview of the design, not a precise technical drawing.
The disc-drive claim was correct—and affects the real price
PS5 Pro does not include an optical drive. Buyers who want to use physical PS5 games, supported PS4 discs, 4K Blu-ray discs or DVDs must purchase and install Sony’s separate PS5 Disc Drive.
This is an important part of the product’s value proposition. The announced US MSRP was $699.99 for the console itself, without the Disc Drive. Sony also sells the official vertical stand separately, while the console includes horizontal plastic feet.
The Disc Drive is not required for digital games, and PS5 Pro is not permanently restricted to digital software. It is an upgradeable all-digital system. However, physical-media buyers should calculate the console and drive together rather than comparing the headline price with a console that includes an optical drive.

Sony’s documentation also distinguishes supported PS5 and PS4 discs from older formats: PS3 and PS2 software cannot be played from disc on PS5 Pro.
What came in the box?
The confirmed US launch package included:
- PS5 Pro console.
- 2TB SSD.
- DualSense wireless controller.
- HDMI cable.
- AC power cord.
- Horizontal plastic feet.
- User manual.
- Astro’s Playroom pre-installed.
It did not include the Disc Drive, a vertical stand, a DualSense Edge or a separate full-price game. The standard DualSense detail mattered because the leak specifically distinguished it from Sony’s considerably more expensive pro controller.
What Sony says PS5 Pro improves
Sony’s official announcement described PS5 Pro as a mid-generation performance upgrade built around three main technologies: a larger graphics processor, faster memory and improved ray tracing.
- 67% more Compute Units: Sony said the GPU has 67% more Compute Units than the current PS5.
- 28% faster memory: Sony said the system’s memory is 28% faster.
- Up to 45% faster rendering: This is Sony’s stated potential improvement, not a guarantee for every game.
- Improved ray tracing: Sony claimed ray-tracing performance could be two to three times that of the current PS5, depending on the situation.
- PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution: PSSR is Sony’s AI-driven upscaling technology, designed to improve image quality while preserving performance.
These claims should not be simplified into “every game runs at native 4K and 60 frames per second.” PS5 Pro enhancements depend on the game, its patch, the selected mode and the display. Some titles can combine higher frame rates, ray tracing and AI-enhanced 4K output; others may receive a smaller benefit or none that is immediately visible.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Sony’s current PS5 Pro product page presents features such as PSSR, ray tracing and high-frame-rate output in the context of supported games. “Up to 120fps” is not a promise that every title reaches 120fps.

Sony’s launch guidance listed PS5 Pro at approximately 388mm wide, 89mm high and 216mm deep, with a weight of approximately 3.1kg. The console has two front USB-C ports and two rear USB-A ports, along with Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi support, including Wi-Fi 7 in applicable territories.
The 2TB SSD was another meaningful difference from lower-capacity PS5 configurations. As with any advertised storage capacity, the space available for games is lower than the raw figure because system software uses part of the drive. Sony’s published material confirms the 2TB specification but does not establish a single universal usable-capacity figure for every region or software state.
Who was PS5 Pro really for?
PS5 Pro made the strongest case for players with a high-quality 4K or high-refresh-rate display who wanted better image quality and ray tracing without always choosing a 30fps graphics mode. It was also more attractive to players who regularly played PS5 Pro-enhanced titles, wanted 2TB of storage or were willing to pay a premium for mid-generation hardware.
A regular PS5 remained the more sensible choice for price-sensitive buyers, physical-media-first players who did not want to buy a separate drive, owners without a 4K or high-refresh display, and existing PS5 owners already satisfied with their console’s performance.
Compatibility also reduced the switching cost for current PlayStation owners. Sony said PS5 Pro works with accessories including PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, the Access controller, Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore.
Verdict: a strong leak, but Sony had the final word
The PS5 Pro leak was unusually accurate on the points readers cared about most. It correctly identified the name, placed the reveal in the right time window, anticipated the family resemblance in the design, predicted the absence of an integrated disc drive and correctly reported that a standard DualSense would be included.
It was still a leak, not a substitute for official documentation. The sketch was unofficial, the three-strip description was a visual claim rather than a formal specification, and the final price and performance figures could only be established by Sony.
In the end, Sony announced PS5 Pro on September 10, 2024, launched it on November 7, 2024, and confirmed a $699.99 US disc-less console with a 2TB SSD and DualSense controller. The story’s original “imminent reveal” framing is now historical, but the leak stands as a remarkably good early indication of what Sony was preparing.
Sony’s announcement and its launch guidance remain the authorities for the final hardware, capabilities and accessories.
