“Destroyed my nostalgia goggles” is a personal verdict, not a universal one. Tomb Raider I-III Remastered makes it possible to compare the original polygon look with updated graphics, and to choose between tank-style and modern controls. That flexibility is useful—but it also puts the old games’ movement and pacing in sharper relief. The question is less whether the trilogy has been preserved than whether its original design still works for you.
What the remaster brings back—and what it asks you to compare
This is more than three base campaigns bundled together. Nintendo’s US listing includes Tomb Raider I with Unfinished Business, Tomb Raider II with Golden Mask, and Tomb Raider III with The Lost Artifact. It also lists Challenge Mode, Photo Mode, updated graphics with a switch to the original polygon look, and 10 unlockable outfits that enhance Lara’s abilities. Nintendo’s US listing describes the package, but those features alone cannot settle whether the games feel good to play now.

The comparison is built into the collection: you can change the presentation and control scheme rather than treating the remaster as a single, fixed interpretation of the originals. The developer’s stated aim was to honor the games while making them accessible to modern audiences. In a January 16, 2024 feature, the PlayStation Blog quoted the development team’s belief that the gameplay was “timeless” and said the team used the original source code. That is the team’s preservation premise—not independent proof that every movement, timing detail, or encounter feels unchanged or holds up equally well today. The PlayStation Blog feature also explains the available graphics and control options.

In presentation and basic design intent, it gives you ways to approach the originals: the polygon look remains available, and the original tank-style controls are an option. But a choice of modes is not the same as a guarantee of identical feel. It lets you test what you remember against what is on screen and in your hands now.

That distinction matters because the trilogy asks the player to engage with its movement, navigation, pacing, and challenge—not just its visual style. A familiar room or silhouette may trigger recognition, while the actual work of moving through a space can feel very different when revisited. The remaster does not remove the need to decide whether that deliberate, older structure is satisfying for you. Nor does the ability to restore the original look make the games’ original design friction disappear.
The modern control scheme is a real alternative, not simply the tank controls with a new label. According to the PlayStation Blog, it uses the right stick to control the camera, and Lara moves directionally based on the camera’s position. That may feel more familiar to players accustomed to newer third-person games, but it also changes how movement relates to the camera. If your comparison is with the original handling, try both schemes before deciding which one best serves the game you want to play.

How to compare graphics and controls for yourself
Rather than asking which mode is objectively correct, use the switches to identify what you value: historical presentation, easier camera handling, or the particular challenge of the originals’ movement.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Start with the control scheme you remember. Choose tank-style controls if you want to revisit the original directional approach. Choose modern controls if you prefer right-stick camera control and movement oriented around the camera.
- Compare graphics in the same area. Switch between updated graphics and the original polygon look using the available presentation toggle. Looking at the same space in both modes makes the visual change easier to judge than relying on memory alone.
- Pay attention to the work, not just the nostalgia. Notice whether camera handling, movement, navigation, and the pace of making progress remain enjoyable for you. Treat that response as your own, not as a verdict the product features can supply.
- Use the option that makes you want to continue. There is no requirement to keep the original look and original controls paired together. The collection offers choices; your preferred combination can be whichever makes these levels most engaging for you.
What has changed since launch
The collection has continued to receive updates. In its August 20, 2026 community update, Aspyr said Patch 3 was available on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, PC, iOS, and Android. It added a brightness slider, 60 fps in Classic Graphics Mode, and pickup highlighting in HD Graphics Mode, alongside bug fixes and optimizations across platforms. Aspyr said Patch 4 was in progress at the time; this is the latest official update covered here, not a claim about the product’s final or present state. Aspyr’s Patch 3 update gives the platform and feature details.

Earlier fixes are part of that history, too. Aspyr’s May 1, 2026 Patch 2 notice documented changes involving graphics, crashes, saves, and platform-specific issues. A fix being documented does not establish that every reported problem is resolved, so platform-specific concerns are best checked against the relevant current patch information. Aspyr’s Patch 2 notice lists examples of those changes.

Revisit it if you want to see how the original levels, expansions, and design choices land for you now—and if switching between graphics and control options sounds like a useful way to make that judgment. Be more cautious if what you want is the uncomplicated return of a childhood feeling: a modernized presentation cannot promise that, and it cannot make your memories a neutral measure of how the games play today.
