The page and a related Discord community brought attention to Sweet Baby Inc., a company that works with game studios on narrative development. Parrish reported that the controversy included harassment directed at company employees, developers who supported the company, and journalists covering the dispute. She described death threats sent to employees and developers making social accounts private. Those are reports about the period covered by her article, not confirmation of present-day activity.
What does Sweet Baby Inc. do, and how much influence do consultants have?
Parrish reported that Sweet Baby Inc. was co-founded in Montreal in 2018 by David Bédard and Kim Belair. Its services include script writing, story reviews, and sensitivity readings. Belair described the work as touching both creative and technical aspects of game storytelling.

Consulting does not mean a consultant has unilateral authority over a game. Mary Kenney, an associate narrative director who had worked with Sweet Baby on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, told Parrish: “They consult. They do research, pitch ideas, give feedback, and maybe even write scripts. But none of that gets into the game unless the core dev team agrees with it.” In other words, the report describes consultants as contributing ideas and work for a studio; the studio’s development team decides what to use.
The feature also addresses a specific rumor about Alan Wake 2. Its director, Kyle Rowley, rejected the claim that Sweet Baby was responsible for changing Saga Anderson from white to Black, writing: “It’s absolutely not true.” That is Rowley’s response as quoted by Parrish, rather than independent evidence about every decision behind the character.

How did it compare with Gamergate in 2014?
Parrish’s comparison is about rhetoric, targets, tactics, and context—not a statistical measurement of two campaigns. She describes Gamergate as a 2014 harassment campaign against women speaking out about misogyny in the games industry. Its public framing invoked “ethics in journalism.” In the 2024 episode, grievances instead centered on “wokeism” and Sweet Baby Inc.

Parrish draws a parallel in the targeting of women, people of color, and journalists, while also noting differences in how developers and gamers pushed back. What did developers say about diversity and pressure?
Parrish’s report records developers rejecting the idea that diversity in games is imposed by outside consultants. Veteran developer Christina Pollock said: “I have never in my entire career seen anyone pressure a developer to make a character more queer or less white.” Gavin Young, a developer on Rainbow Six Mobile, said: “Believe me, we’re trying: we put diverse characters in games because they represent our teams and our friends.” Game director Sam Barlow put his view more broadly: “DEI is a moral necessity until the people making games are a decent approximation of the world they are making games for.”
These remarks show what the named developers argued; they are not statistics or a neutral finding about every studio’s practices. Kenney’s account of consultants’ role and Rowley’s rejection of the Saga Anderson rumor likewise offer specific statements about decision-making and attribution, rather than a universal map of how every game is made.

Why did Parrish call the return “smaller and sadder”?
At publication in March 2024, Parrish judged that the episode appeared to be “quickly fizzling out” in the larger industry context. The article nevertheless describes serious abuse for the people targeted, including death threats reported by employees. The title’s “smaller” is not backed by participant or reach counts, and “sadder” is an editorial characterization—not a finding that the harassment was minor or harmless.
