What is The Rewinder?
The Rewinder is an adventure puzzle game built around investigation, memory, and supernatural abilities. Its pixel-art presentation draws on the look of Chinese ink paintings, while its story is inspired by traditional Chinese folklore and mythology. The game presents its own fictional setting; it should not be taken as a comprehensive account of Chinese religion or folklore.
You play as Yun, described by Steam as the last known Rewinder. The Spirit Wardens send Yun to investigate a village after a spirit fails to reincarnate. The village is deserted, resentful spirits remain, and a woman waits alone in a teahouse. The mystery turns on what happened seven years earlier.
How do the puzzles and story connect?
Yun can communicate with spirits and enter other people’s memories. The central puzzle idea is to use what Yun senses in those memories and influence people’s intentions, changing events in the past. Memory access is therefore both part of the mystery’s narrative and the means by which the player investigates it. The official Steam description calls it “a 2D puzzle adventure game inspired by traditional Chinese folklore.” Steam’s listing provides the game’s full premise.

Which version should you choose?
The official listings establish where the game is sold and what each store says it supports, but they do not establish that one version performs or controls better than another. Choose based on the hardware you own and the store’s stated features:

Demo, languages, and additional content
Steam lists a free demo and the Root of Evil additional content. Xbox also lists a Root of Evil add-on. Those are storefront-specific listings; check each store for what is currently offered and whether add-on terms apply. Language support also differs by store: Steam lists English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Japanese interface and subtitles, while Nintendo lists Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and American English. The App Store says English plus three more languages.
