Esports became a spectator phenomenon through more than packed arenas: audiences watch live broadcasts online, follow recurring tournament circuits, attend in-person events, and increasingly tune in through creators who co-stream competitions. Those forms of viewing are measured in different ways, so no single audience figure captures the whole scene.

How did competitive gaming become something people watch?

Competitive video games can be played by a small group while watched by a much larger one. Organized tournaments give that competition a schedule and stakes; broadcasts make matches accessible beyond the venue; recognizable teams, players, and game titles give fans reasons to follow events over time. In-person events add the shared atmosphere of a live crowd, while online viewing removes the need to travel.

These elements reinforce one another, but the available figures do not prove that any one factor caused esports’ growth. The European Commission-hosted Understanding Esports course frames a central audience question as “why and how do we watch esport?” The practical answer includes both the competition itself and the ways broadcasts and communities make it accessible.

Where do esports audiences watch?

Official tournament broadcasts

Organizers and rights holders distribute tournament coverage through digital platforms, where viewers can watch a match as it happens without attending in person. A broadcast’s reach may include viewers across regions, but a platform-specific or event-specific count does not automatically represent the total number of people who followed the tournament.

Creator co-streams

Co-streaming lets creators present or comment on competition for their own audiences. It adds a personality-led route into an event alongside its official broadcast. Stream Hatchet’s 2025 Yearly Report, published in 2026, attributes 1.4 billion hours watched—or 50% of esports hours watched in its 2025 accounting—to co-streaming channels. This is a share of cumulative viewing time within that report’s scope, not a claim that half of unique esports viewers watched co-streams. The report also excludes TikTok Live from some all-platform comparisons.

Live venues and hybrid events

Stadiums and other venues make esports a live event as well as a broadcast. Online viewing and venue attendance are separate measures: a person at an event is not necessarily counted in a platform audience figure, and broadcast audiences should not be described as ticket holders. Event operations can also combine online and offline elements. In Japan, the Japan Esports Union reports that hybrid online/offline event operations accounted for more than 35% of the country’s esports market in 2024.

What do esports audience numbers actually measure?

Audience statistics answer different questions. A high peak indicates how many viewers were watching at the busiest measured moment; hours watched indicate accumulated viewing time. Neither figure is a count of distinct people across an entire season or year.

Measure What it tells you What it does not tell you by itself
Peak concurrent viewers The largest reported audience watching at one time, often during a major match or final. The total number of unique people who watched any part of an event.
Average concurrent viewers The average number watching simultaneously over a defined broadcast period. The total amount of viewing time or the event’s full unique audience.
Hours watched Cumulative viewing time across the report’s stated games, platforms, and time period. The number of individual viewers; repeat viewing contributes more hours.
Fans A source-defined estimate of people who meet its criteria for being esports fans. A directly observed audience for one specific match or platform.
Event attendance People attending at a physical venue, as defined by the organizer or source. Online viewers or the total audience across broadcast platforms.

Always read a figure with its year, geography, publisher, platform coverage, and metric. A country-level fan estimate cannot stand in for a tournament’s peak audience, and one event’s peak cannot stand in for a full year of viewing.

What do recent figures show—and what do they not show?

Viewing time and a major event peak

Stream Hatchet’s 2026 report records 2.8 billion esports hours watched across 2025, a cumulative-time measure within its accounting. It also lists League of Legends Worlds 2025 at 6.6 million peak viewers. That peak is a concurrent event figure, not the tournament’s total unique audience. The two numbers describe different things and should not be compared as if they were interchangeable.

Regional differences between games

The same report identifies Mobile Legends: Bang Bang events among the leading events for peak viewership and notes the game’s popularity among Southeast Asian audiences. This is a reminder that esports spectatorship is not a single uniform global market: games, event formats, and regional followings differ.

A national fan estimate is not a global count

The Japan Esports Union’s 2026 release estimates 9.67 million esports fans in Japan in 2024, defining fans to include people who have watched matches or streaming videos. It forecasts nearly 15 million Japanese fans by 2026; that is a forecast published in 2026, not a confirmed 2026 result. The same release says sponsorship accounted for more than 35% of Japan’s esports market in 2024, separately from hybrid online/offline event operations, also reported at more than 35%. These national market components do not describe the worldwide industry.

Event-specific figures and broad global estimates

The International Esports Federation’s 2024 presentation lists 37.5 million viewership, 5.6 million hours watched, and 722 broadcast hours for the 2023 World Esports Championship. Those numbers concern that championship, not all esports. The presentation also includes projections for future years; projected values should not be treated as observed results.

A 2025 Saudi Press Agency article says global esports viewers exceeded 574 million in 2024 and were expected to exceed 640 million by 2027. The page does not provide a transparent methodology, so these should be understood as attributed estimates and a forecast, not a harmonized measured series directly comparable with Stream Hatchet’s event and viewing-time metrics.

Why are esports audience estimates hard to compare?

  • Definitions vary: “viewer,” “fan,” peak audience, average audience, and hours watched are not interchangeable.
  • Coverage varies: platform inclusion differs; Stream Hatchet notes that some all-platform comparisons exclude TikTok Live.
  • Geography varies: Japan’s national fan estimate measures something different from a global event broadcast figure.
  • Time periods vary: a tournament final, a championship, and an annual total have different scopes.
  • Forecasts are not results: projections published for a future year should remain labeled forecasts unless a source later verifies the outcome.

Older projections should also be kept in their historical context. The European Commission-hosted course repeats Newzoo projections from a 2022 report, including estimates and projections through 2025; those are historical forecasts, not current measured figures. Anders Hval Olsen’s 2015 thesis abstract likewise contains audience-growth projections for 2014–2019, which are dated forecasts rather than evidence of present-day audience size.

What the rise means for esports as entertainment

Esports spectatorship now spans a spectrum: a viewer might discover a game through a creator’s co-stream, watch an official tournament broadcast, follow a recurring circuit, or attend a live event. Each route can build an audience, but each is counted differently. The strongest account of esports’ spectator scale therefore keeps the viewing format and metric attached to every number instead of collapsing fans, attendance, peaks, and watch time into one headline total.
