If The Rise of the Golden Idol is crashing on your Steam Deck, start by updating SteamOS and restarting the device, then check for third-party apps that may be interfering. If the problem continues, review the game’s Compatibility settings and test a different Steam Play tool as a reversible diagnostic step. No available evidence confirms one fix for every crash, so work through these steps before changing or deleting game data.
1. Update SteamOS and restart the Deck
Install any pending SteamOS updates, then restart the device. Steam recommends updates and a restart as first steps for system instability. Follow Steam’s Steam Deck software and troubleshooting guidance.
2. Check for third-party apps
If the game still crashes, exit or disable third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode, then restart and test the game again. This is a system-level troubleshooting step; it does not establish that a particular app is causing the crash.
3. Review the game’s Compatibility settings
In your Steam library, open The Rise of the Golden Idol’s Properties and select Compatibility. Steam’s menu labels may change between client updates. Check the current compatibility setting before changing it so you can restore it if needed.

- Open the game’s Properties from its library entry.
- Open Compatibility and review the selected Steam Play compatibility tool.
- If you test a different tool, try the latest Proton version available in Steam’s menu, then launch the game and see whether the behavior changes.
- If the test does not help, return to the original setting.
Treat this as a diagnostic test, not a confirmed game-specific fix. Steam notes that forcing a compatibility tool can cause the Windows version of a game to download when only its Linux version was installed. Steam’s troubleshooting guide explains the compatibility-tool approach.
4. If the crash followed a fullscreen change
Restore the previous display setting and test again if the problem began after toggling fullscreen. An archived note for the December 2, 2024 update says, “Removed ability to break the game on Steamdeck using full-screen toggle.” That documents a historical fullscreen-toggle issue and fix; it does not show that fullscreen is responsible for a present-day crash.
