There is no single best companion for every fight or player in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. If you want a gameplay-first starting point, Game8 ranks companions by how useful they are across Rook’s classes and specializations: Lace Harding and Lucanis Dellamorte lead its list, while Bellara Lutare sits at the bottom. That is one outlet’s assessment, not an official or universal verdict. Party combinations, Rook’s build, and whose story you want to follow can all change whom you should bring.
How to read this companion ranking
The order below follows Game8’s published cross-class usefulness ranking. It is a practical baseline if you want companions who can fit a range of Rook builds, but it does not measure story quality or prove that one character is best in every encounter. GamesRadar’s guidance is that no companion is inherently mechanically superior; team synergy matters too.
| Rank | Companion | Game8 tier |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lace Harding | SS |
| 2 | Lucanis Dellamorte | SS |
| 3 | Emmrich Volkarin | S |
| 4 | Taash | S |
| 5 | Neve Gallus | A |
| 6 | Davrin | A |
| 7 | Bellara Lutare | B |
Game8 groups companions into tiers rather than claiming a precise gap between characters. The numbered order within a shared tier here is for easy reading; the source’s meaningful distinction is the tier placement. Game8’s tier list explains its focus on cross-class and specialization usefulness.
Who are the best companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?
1. Lace Harding — SS tier
Harding is one of Game8’s two top-tier choices for broad usefulness across Rook’s classes and specializations. She is also a useful example of why party composition can matter as much as an individual ranking: GamesRadar describes pairing Harding’s Shred with Neve’s Blizzard to prime and detonate enemies.

2. Lucanis Dellamorte — SS tier
Lucanis shares Game8’s top tier with Harding. On the cross-build criterion used for this list, he is a strong starting pick when you want a companion ranked highly for use across different Rook setups.
3. Emmrich Volkarin — S tier
Emmrich is in Game8’s S tier, one step below its SS group. That placement makes him a high-ranked option in the same gameplay-focused comparison, though the tier does not establish that he will outperform another companion in every specific party.

4. Taash — S tier
Taash also lands in Game8’s S tier. If you are choosing from the tier list alone, she sits alongside Emmrich as a strong general-purpose candidate rather than in the top SS group.
5. Neve Gallus — A tier
Neve is in Game8’s A tier. Her value in a particular group may be greater than a standalone tier suggests: GamesRadar’s Harding-and-Neve example shows how her Blizzard ability can work with Harding’s Shred to set up a prime-and-detonate combination.

6. Davrin — A tier
Davrin is also in Game8’s A tier. As with Neve, that placement reflects the outlet’s cross-class criterion, not a claim that Davrin is a poor choice or unsuitable for a particular build or encounter.
7. Bellara Lutare — B tier
Bellara is in Game8’s B tier under its cross-class usefulness measure. A lower placement in that specific list should not be mistaken for an overall judgment of her character, story, or usefulness in every team.

Which companions should you bring?
Choose for the fight in front of you, not just the tier label. A companion’s usefulness depends on the interaction between their abilities, Rook’s build, and the other active companion. For example, GamesRadar highlights Harding’s Shred and Neve’s Blizzard as a combination that can prime and detonate enemies. That is a concrete synergy example, not evidence that the pairing is best in every battle.
- For a broad gameplay baseline: Start with Harding or Lucanis, the SS-tier companions in Game8’s assessment.
- For the cited prime-and-detonate pairing: Bring Harding and Neve together to use the Shred-and-Blizzard interaction GamesRadar describes.
- For your own build or a specific encounter: Compare the abilities available to your companions and select the combination that complements Rook, rather than treating the ranking as a fixed party order.
EA’s pre-play guide says companion abilities can be swapped outside combat, so you can adjust those abilities between fights. It also recommends completing side content and companion quests because they affect later stages. EA’s companion guide covers that preparation advice.

How much should companion stories affect your choice?
Story preference is a legitimate reason to bring someone, but there is no objective story-quality ranking established here. Each companion has an individual storyline and quests, and those personal arcs can connect to relationships and later events. BioWare Creative Director John Epler described the game’s companion stories as involving “romance, tragic loss and complex choices that will affect relationships with players and the fate of The Veilguard.” EA’s launch announcement includes his statement.
If you care most about a particular character, prioritize their quests and take them along when you want to experience their story. If combat is your main concern, use the tier list as a starting point and adapt your active group to your build and the fight.
All seven companions
The full companion roster is Bellara Lutare, Davrin, Emmrich Volkarin, Lace Harding, Lucanis Dellamorte, Neve Gallus, and Taash. Game8’s tiers describe one gameplay-focused way to compare them; they do not establish a universal order for combat, story, and personal preference.
