When you select a household in The Sims 4 and the game starts loading it, then drops you back on the world map, the load has failed before the household reached its lot. That symptom has no single known cause. Community and forum reports point to a few recurring suspects: a problem with the lot, a Sim or object in the household, or a mod or custom content. The fastest route to a fix is to work out how far the problem reaches, then test in reversible steps before you touch any save or game file.
What the symptom does and does not tell you
The same report is also worded as “when a household doesn’t load,” and players searching for it usually describe it the same way. The EA Forums thread “[FIXED] Loading family just loads Map again” treats it as a household or lot load failure and lists possible trouble with the lot, a Sim, an object, or a mod (EA Forums troubleshooting discussion). It is a legacy community thread, not an official EA statement, so read its diagnosis as a set of leads.
A Reddit thread on r/thesims4 that asks the same question, “When loading a household it pops back to the world map screen . Help please ?”, contains replies from players who traced the problem to mod conflicts or broken custom content (r/thesims4 discussion). Those accounts are individual experiences from several years ago. They show that mods are a plausible cause. They do not measure how often this happens, and they do not confirm a current, known bug.
Step 1: Establish the scope
Before changing anything, find out which households and saves are affected. The answer narrows the list of likely causes considerably.

Step 2: Run the quick checks in order
- Exit the game completely, then relaunch it and try the affected household once. Note the result before changing anything else. The EA Forums thread recommends a full close and restart between each troubleshooting attempt, so the test result is clean.
- Note the scope from the table above. Load a second household in the same save, and if you can, load the affected household in a different save.
- If the game uses mods or custom content, test without them (Step 3). This is the most productive test in the reports reviewed here, but it is still a test, not a verified cure.
- If the problem persists with mods removed, back up your saves and check the game’s repair option (Step 4).
Step 3: Test mods and custom content safely
Move content out, do not delete it
- Close the game completely.
- Copy your saves folder and your Mods folder to a separate location. On Windows PCs, the game’s user data sits under DocumentsElectronic ArtsThe Sims 4, but confirm the location in your own installation before copying.
- Move the mods and custom content (not the saves) into a holding folder outside the game’s folder structure. Moving keeps everything reversible.
- Relaunch the game and try the affected household again.
If the household loads, the problem is almost certainly in the content you removed or in how it interacts with this save. If it still fails, mods are probably not the cause, and you can return everything to its original place.
Reintroduce content in batches
- Return half the removed content to the Mods folder, relaunch, and test. If the household fails, the culprit is in that half. If it loads, it is in the other half.
- Keep dividing the group that caused the failure until you isolate one item. Record each batch so you can repeat the test.
- Once you find a conflicting or broken item, replace it with a current version from its creator or remove it. Do not assume a mod is fine because its creator says it is updated. The reports reviewed here describe players who found a conflict despite updated mods.
Step 4: Back up first, then consider repair
Before any file operation, copy the affected save to a separate location, and keep that copy until the household loads normally. The legacy EA thread mentions both backups and game repair, but its steps are from an older version of the game. Check the current repair option in the launcher you use to install The Sims 4 before you run it, and confirm what it changes.

Avoid these steps as a first move
- Deleting Sims or households, which can permanently alter a save.
- Overwriting a lot or replacing save files without a copy of the originals.
- Applying old thread-specific fixes from years-old posts without checking whether they match your game version.
Each of these can change the save in ways that are hard to reverse, and none is needed for the reversible checks above.

- The household still fails after mods and custom content are removed and the game has been fully restarted.
- Several saves fail after a repair, not only the one you were testing.
- The failure starts with a specific game update you can date, which is useful evidence to include in a report.
When you contact EA support, include the scope you established, the steps you have already tested, and whether mods were removed. Those details help separate a game problem from a content problem.
