Its flooded city and detective systems are its strongest draws; clumsy combat, awkward navigation, repetition, and technical roughness are the main costs.
What kind of game is The Sinking City?
It is a third-person, open-world detective adventure set in flooded Oakmont, Massachusetts, in the early 1920s. Private investigator Charles Reed arrives to investigate a supernatural flood and the disturbing visions affecting him. The premise and genre are also reflected in the March 20, 2019 announcement from Bigben.

The game draws on H. P. Lovecraft’s fiction, including “The Shadow Over Innsmouth” and “Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and his Family,” but it tells its own story rather than directly adapting either tale. The Guardian’s review identifies those influences.

Investigation is the game’s clearest strength. You search locations for evidence, consult records in archives, connect clues in a Mind Palace, and use supernatural visions to reconstruct scenes. These systems give the cases a satisfying investigative shape, though following leads does not always produce deductions as compelling as the mechanics suggest. PC Gamer’s review praises the detective mechanics while finding many cases and conclusions less satisfying than the studio’s Sherlock Holmes mysteries.
#1 Best Overall
- Day One Edition includes the Investigator Pack - exclusive private investigator outfit, permanent access to a first aid kit and antipsychotics, and initial supply of crafting resources; map of Oakmont
- An oppressive atmosphere and story inspired by the universe of H.P. Lovecraft
- A vast open world that can be explored on foot, by boat, or even a diving suit
- An arsenal of weapons from the 1920s with which to take on nightmarish creatures
The cases make the player work with gathered information rather than simply follow a marker from one fight to the next. If piecing together evidence is your reason to play, the investigation loop can carry the experience. If you expect every mystery to deliver a strong, elegant deduction, the results are uneven.
Is it scary, or more of a detective game?
It is better described as atmospheric detective horror than as a game built primarily around conventional scares. The drowned streets, strange visions, and Lovecraft-inspired setting create a persistent sense of unease. The emphasis is on investigating a city and its mysteries, with monsters and combat as part of that experience—not on delivering uninterrupted horror set pieces.
That atmosphere is a major part of the appeal. Game Informer’s review is relatively positive about the twisting narrative and memorable setting, while acknowledging stiff combat and repetition.
What are the main drawbacks?
Combat and resources
Shooting can feel stiff, and ammunition is scarce enough to make combat a resource-management problem rather than a consistently satisfying action system. The Guardian and PC Gamer both criticize the combat; the Guardian specifically notes clunky shooting and limited ammunition.

Getting around Oakmont
The open world provides a broad setting for investigations, but its scale does not guarantee variety. The Guardian calls out awkward boat navigation, while PC Gamer regards the open world as a weakness. Traversal can become an obstacle between the parts of the game that work best: the locations, evidence, and cases.
Repetition and roughness
Published reviews also flag repetitive play and technical roughness. These are meaningful reservations if you want a smooth, consistently paced adventure; the atmosphere and central mystery do not erase them.

Who should play The Sinking City?
It is a better fit for players who prize clue-based investigation, oppressive atmosphere, and Lovecraftian fiction over polished combat. Consider it if you are patient with resource management, boat travel, and uneven case payoffs. If responsive shooting, fluid traversal, or a tightly varied open world are essential, its strongest qualities may not compensate.
That verdict reflects a mixed critical picture rather than a unanimous recommendation: PC Gamer and The Guardian stress substantial gameplay weaknesses, while Game Informer is more taken with the narrative and setting. The reviews were published in 2019 and assessed earlier releases, so they are useful for understanding the game’s design and core trade-offs, not as direct evaluations of every later version.

What does the PS5 remaster change?
The current US PlayStation Store listing is for The Sinking City Remastered on PS5, attributed to Frogwares Ireland Ltd. It describes an Unreal Engine 5 remaster with ray tracing, 4K textures, performance and quality modes, and photo mode. The listing also names improvements to controls, combat, balance, crowds, and tutorials. See the US PlayStation Store listing for its current edition details.
Those listed changes distinguish the remaster from the older releases covered by the 2019 reviews, but they do not establish that the underlying investigation, navigation, or case design has been rebuilt. The Store listing includes add-ons and bundles; prices, discounts, ratings, and availability can change and vary by region, so check your local listing before buying.
Should you read Lovecraft before playing?
No prior reading is needed to follow the game’s original story. “The Shadow Over Innsmouth” is a relevant companion if you want to explore one of its named influences, but The Sinking City is not a direct adaptation. The Guardian also identifies “Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and his Family” as an influence.
