There is no single Persona that does every job best in Persona 4 Golden. Yoshitsune is the standout late-game physical attacker, while Trumpeter is the most versatile support pick. Daisoujou and Alice specialize in light- and dark-based instant kills; Odin, Surt, Loki, and Thor bring powerful elemental signatures. The right choice depends on the fight, each Persona’s affinities, and how much work you want to put into inherited skills.
How to read this ranking
This is a ranking by battle role, not a claim that one Persona dominates every encounter. The recommendations below draw on GameWith and Samurai Gamers strategy guides, which prioritize factors such as defensive affinities, signature or naturally available skills, and skill inheritance. GameWith frames its recommendations around a first playthrough with limited skill cards; neither guide is a controlled comparison of damage output.

Base levels indicate when these Personas become relevant, not a guarantee of the exact moment you can fuse them. Consider them late-game options unless you have a specific reason to plan a build earlier.
Best Personas by role
1. Yoshitsune — best physical boss attacker
At base level 75, Yoshitsune is the clearest choice for a physical damage specialist. Samurai Gamers lists Hassou Tobi as an eight-hit physical attack against all enemies and recommends pairing it with Charge for a powerful attack sequence. Its defensive profile is unusually useful for a damage dealer: no listed affinity weakness, physical nullification, fire resistance, and reflection of electricity and light.
#1 Best Overall
- A bigger, better version of one of the best RPGs ever: Improved visuals, tons of new story and voiced dialogue, and much more combine with deep turn-based combat, addicting character and Persona management, and a memorable cast of personalities.
- Make meaningful bonds with characters via social links: In between its exploration, battles, and Persona management, P4G lets players choose how they wish to spend their time each day in a variety of different activities.
- Will you uncover the true ending to the story? Nearly 100 hours of gameplay thrusts you into a deep mystery where midnight television leads to serial killings.
Yoshitsune’s high ranking is about its physical role, not all-purpose coverage. It is a late-game investment, and its headline strategy depends on setting up Charge before using Hassou Tobi.
2. Trumpeter — best support and utility
Trumpeter, base level 67, is the strongest support anchor among these picks. Its listed toolkit includes Debilitate and Heat Riser, giving it ways to weaken foes and strengthen an ally. Its affinity profile has no listed weakness: it absorbs ice, reflects electricity and light, and nullifies dark. GameWith also recommends it for support and mob battles.

3. Daisoujou — light instant-kill specialist
Daisoujou is a level 60 specialist built around Samsara, its signature light-based instant-kill option. Its dark weakness is an important trade-off: account for that vulnerability with inherited defensive coverage or avoid exposing it to dark attacks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches4. Alice — dark instant-kill specialist
Alice, base level 72, is the corresponding dark specialist, with Die for Me! as her defining skill. Her light weakness calls for defensive planning, and the skill’s SP cost makes resource management relevant. Alice is most compelling when instant-kill pressure suits the encounter, rather than as a universal damage choice.
5–8. Elemental specialists
These Personas each have a distinct elemental signature. They are not interchangeable: assess the enemy’s vulnerabilities and the Persona’s own defenses before committing to one.
| Persona | Base level | Signature role or skill | Build consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Odin | 74 | Wind; Panta Rhei | Check affinity coverage and whether inherited skills are needed for the encounters you face. |
| Surt | 69 | Fire; Ragnarok | Compare its fire specialization with its defensive affinities before using it as a regular attacker. |
| Loki | 64 | Ice; Niflheim | Use its ice specialty where it fits; inherited coverage may help address defensive gaps. |
| Thor | 65 | Electricity; Thunder Reign | Match the electric focus to the fight and account for its affinity profile when building. |
Samurai Gamers highlights these signature skills as reasons to consider each specialist. The guide also notes that some elemental choices need inherited skills to compensate for affinity weaknesses; check the specific build you plan to use rather than assuming every Persona arrives ready for every matchup.

9. Beelzebub — durable, flexible option
At base level 81, Beelzebub offers four elemental resistances or absorptions, but has a light weakness. Samurai Gamers describes its firepower as moderate without inherited boosts. That makes it a defensive and flexible pick, rather than a substitute for Yoshitsune’s physical burst or a specialist’s signature elemental attack.

Choosing the right one for your team
- For a physical boss plan: choose Yoshitsune and build around Charge into Hassou Tobi.
- For buffs and debuffs: use Trumpeter’s Heat Riser and Debilitate alongside your damage dealers.
- For instant-kill attempts: choose Daisoujou for Samsara or Alice for Die for Me!, while protecting their respective dark and light weaknesses.
- For elemental coverage: pick Odin, Surt, Loki, or Thor according to the element and signature skill useful in the encounter.
- For defensive flexibility: consider Beelzebub if its affinity spread helps your team, and be prepared to invest inherited boosts if you want stronger damage.
These recommendations are guide-based, and build effort matters. Natural resistances and access to relevant skills can reduce compromises, especially on a first playthrough with few skill cards; inherited skills can broaden a specialist’s options, but take more planning.
