How to choose a strong BO6 assault rifle
Match the rifle to the way you take fights. Effective range and damage breakpoints matter when engagements stretch out; headshot potential rewards precise aim; and recoil control matters when you hold the trigger. Handling can also favor players who prioritize quick movement or weapon readiness.
Mode matters too: Multiplayer, Warzone, and Zombies do not necessarily reward the same weapon or build. The official information cited here does not establish a single rifle that leads in all three, so treat the picks below as role-based candidates rather than a cross-mode tier list.
Best assault rifles by role
Merrick 556: range and headshot-oriented play
Treyarch introduced the Merrick 556 in its Season 06 notes as a full-auto assault rifle with “Excellent range and highly rewards headshots.” The introduction also describes respectable rate of fire and handling, alongside clean iron sights. That makes it a sensible candidate if you favor ranged engagements and can reliably land headshots; the description does not establish that it has the best current win rate or time to kill. Treyarch’s Season 06 patch notes are dated October 8, 2025.

In Season 04, its middle damage band was removed: the maximum-damage range was extended from 0–22.2 m to 0–45.7 m, while minimum damage applied beyond 45.7 m. Treyarch said two headshots improve its time to kill at all ranges, or one headshot with the CHF Barrel. This supports a headshot-oriented role, not a claim that the rifle is universally best. Season 06 also increased Fast Mag 1’s ammunition from 25 to 26 rounds. Season 04 notes and the Season 06 notes document those changes.
Krig C: hard-hitting fire with controlled bursts
Activision describes the Krig C as versatile, with moderate whole-body damage and a four-shot elimination within its effective range. Its recoil starts controllably but becomes shakier during sustained fire. Short bursts or recoil-control attachments can help keep shots on target. This is official weapon guidance, not independent comparative testing. Activision’s Season 01 guide provides the weapon description.

Other rifles worth considering
ABR A1: burst fire for accurate players
The ABR A1 is a candidate for players who can place precise burst shots. In Season 06, Treyarch said one headshot would enable a one-burst kill at all ranges. The same update increased its maximum-band damage from 29 to 32 and minimum-band damage from 22 to 24. Its full-auto rapid-fire attachment received additional vertical and horizontal recoil, however, so do not assume the full-auto setup handles like the burst configuration. These are documented balance details, not proof of a current overall ranking. The Season 06 notes list the changes.
Goblin Mk2: a balance-adjusted option
Season 06 tightened the Goblin Mk2’s hipfire spread and greatly reduced its first-shot recoil, changes Treyarch said were intended to reduce firing variance. Those adjustments may matter to players who value steadier initial shots or hipfire, but they do not show that it is now the strongest rifle. Where the launch-era rifles fit
At launch, the assault-rifle class included the XM4, AK-74, AMES 85, GPR 91, Model L, Goblin Mk2, and AS VAL. Activision described the AMES 85 as accurate and suited to mid-to-long-range fights, the GPR 91 as a high-handling rifle, and the Model L as controllable and suited to mid-range engagements. These descriptions can help narrow a role, but they predate later balance updates and additions, so they should not be treated as a current ranking. What the latest documented rifle changes establish
The latest rifle-specific official notes identified here are Treyarch’s Season 06 patch notes, dated October 8, 2025. They add the Merrick 556 and adjust the GPR 91, Goblin Mk2, and ABR A1. They document weapon descriptions and individual balance changes, but provide no comparative usage, win-rate, competitive pick-rate, or universal rank order. As a result, they support choosing by role—not declaring a verified 2026 meta leader.
