The Thing: Remastered updates Nightdive Studios’ restoration of Computer Artworks’ 2002 survival-horror shooter—not a new adaptation or remake of John Carpenter’s film. It retains the game’s post-film story and squad-survival premise while upgrading its visuals, controls, interface, and difficulty options.
What is The Thing: Remastered?
The game continues the story of John Carpenter’s 1982 film, with players leading a team in the aftermath of its events. Its central tension remains deciding whether to trust squadmates when an alien may have replaced one of them. The remaster preserves that foundation rather than retelling the film.
Universal Products & Experiences announced the project with Nightdive Studios on June 7, 2024, describing a planned digital release for Windows PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. Universal announced the digital launch on December 5, 2024, and named those platforms as well as NVIDIA GeForce NOW cloud streaming. Its stated $29.99 price was the launch price, not a current price; availability and pricing can vary by store and region. Universal’s announcement · Universal’s launch announcement
How have the graphics changed?
Nightdive rebuilt and enhanced the game using its KEX Engine. Universal’s announcement describes hand-crafted improvements to character models, textures, and animations, along with updated lighting and atmospheric effects. The intent is to sharpen the original’s presentation without losing its cold, uneasy atmosphere.

- The Thing: Remastered breathes new life into the 2002 third-person survival horror shooter, inspired by Universal Pictures' legendary 1982 film. Revitalized by Nightdive Studios, this version features meticulously enhanced character models, environments, and animations, delivering the same pulse-pounding tension and grotesque horror, now reimagined for a new generation.
Performance figures differ by official page and should not be treated as one universal cap. Universal’s 2024 announcement specifies up to 4K resolution at 120 FPS on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S; its launch release also says up to 4K/120 FPS. Nightdive’s game page separately lists 4K resolution and up to 144 FPS, alongside antialiasing and per-pixel lighting. These are publisher and developer specifications, not independent performance tests, and the pages do not explain the difference between the frame-rate claims. Nightdive’s game page
What gameplay and quality-of-life changes are included?
The squad system remains central. Universal describes a team of up to four non-player characters drawn from Soldier, Medic, and Engineer classes. The remaster changes how players interact with combat and the interface rather than removing the uncertainty around whom to trust.

- Third-person aiming and updated controls.
- Quick-select wheels for choosing equipment and commands.
- Controller support on PC.
- UI and HUD improvements, plus balancing changes.
- An easier difficulty option.
These features are described in a December 2024 Xbox Wire interview with original developer Mark Atkinson, who was involved in technical and design work on the 2002 game. He said, “The remaster adds many significant upgrades in terms of gameplay, level design, UI, HUD etc., which go beyond a simple 4K reskin.” Atkinson also described the original’s difficulty as uneven; that is his assessment, not an independent review of either version.
The art team also framed the visual work as a preservation effort. Ron Ashtiani, an original artist and the remaster’s art-direction lead, said his role was to help update assets “while we remaster the graphics and art assets, we don’t lose the essence of the original game.” That distinction matters for a game whose atmosphere depends on suspicion and isolation as much as on its creature effects.

What do the updates mean for the original’s rough edges?
Atkinson identified scripted creature attacks, uneven difficulty, awkward combat, and weak boss fights among complaints about the original. The remaster’s stated changes—aiming, controls, balancing, and a lower difficulty option—address some of those areas, but the available developer descriptions do not establish that every criticism has been resolved. A console patch documented by Nightdive on February 11, 2025, adjusted weapon firing-rate behavior and changed the amounts dispensed by ammunition and health dispensers according to difficulty. Those notes are a dated console-update snapshot, not confirmation of the latest build on every platform. Nightdive’s console patch 1.1 notes

Atari’s product page lists physical and Deluxe editions. The Deluxe Edition is described as including a collector’s box, the game, a SteelBook case, an Outpost 31 “Blake” ID card, sew-on patches, and a poster. Check the relevant platform store or retailer for region, stock, and current pricing; the listed contents do not establish that every edition is available everywhere. Atari’s product page

There is also an unresolved discrepancy in official descriptions of the game’s length: Universal’s announcement says 11 levels, while Atari’s later page calls it “20 frightening levels.” Neither page explains the different counts, so neither figure can be confidently presented as the definitive total.
