The best city for video game tourism depends on what you want to do: explore a gaming district, play in a museum, visit a franchise-themed attraction, or see real landmarks through a game. This editorially curated ten-city guide groups destinations by those experiences; it is not a measured global ranking based on visitor numbers or comparable scores.
What counts as video game tourism?
The term can describe travel prompted by games, such as visiting a real place that appears in or inspired a game. It can also cover trips to physical venues built around gaming culture: arcades, museums, esports events, and theme parks. Academic discussions examine the relationship between games and travel, but do not establish a comparable score for ranking these cities (DiGRA Digital Library; Cadernos de Geografia).
The order below is editorial, not a claim that one city outperforms another. Choose by the experience you want, how easily attractions fit together, and whether you need a reservation or separate admission. Confirm hours, prices, events, and access with official sources before travelling.
Which cities are best for video game fans?
1. Tokyo, Japan: Akihabara, arcades, and game-linked sights
Tokyo offers the clearest concentrated gaming-neighborhood experience in this list. Japan’s official tourism organization describes Akihabara as a district for gaming and otaku culture, tracing its evolution from a postwar electrical-goods market into an electronics and games destination (Japan National Tourism Organization: Akihabara).

For retro games, Super Potato occupies three floors and stocks systems including Famicom, Nintendo 64, PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and Game Boy. Its small arcade features games from the 1980s and 1990s. Japan’s tourism guide also explains the multistory game-center format and names Akihabara as a place to find it (Japan National Tourism Organization: The Ultimate Guide to Game Centers in Japan).
There is also a game-to-place connection beyond the arcade district: National Geographic links scenes in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom to Tokyo’s National Museum. Treat this as a visitor’s interpretive connection, not an officially endorsed game tourism route (National Geographic).
2. Osaka, Japan: game centers in Kansai
Osaka is a practical second Japanese stop for a trip that already includes Kansai. The Japan National Tourism Organization identifies Umeda alongside Akihabara as an area with larger game centers that arrange attractions across floors. The available destination detail is less specific than for Tokyo, so use Umeda as a starting point rather than relying on a particular venue without checking it first (Japan National Tourism Organization: The Ultimate Guide to Game Centers in Japan).
3. Orlando, Florida: theme-park franchises and arcade play
Orlando suits visitors looking for games brought into large-scale attractions. National Geographic describes Super Nintendo World at Universal Epic Universe Orlando, including rides themed around Yoshi and Donkey Kong. It also reports that Arcade Monsters offered access to more than 200 pinball machines and arcade games for one entry price. That is the travel article’s description, not a guaranteed current offer; check both attractions’ operators for access, names, prices, and terms before planning (National Geographic).

4. Rochester, New York: playable video-game history
The Strong National Museum of Play is the strongest choice here for gaming history. Its Level Up itinerary includes playable experiences, gaming artifacts, rare prototypes, the World Video Game Hall of Fame, Console Central, and Infinity Arcade. The museum describes a 90-foot timeline in the exhibit. Most arcade games require tokens; the museum page lists four tokens for $1, but check the current price before visiting (The Strong National Museum of Play: Itineraries for Visiting The Strong Museum).
5. London, England: arcades, esports, and interactive attractions
London’s gaming options are spread across several kinds of entertainment rather than one single district. Visit London documents conventions and esports events, VR, retro arcade machines, gaming cafes, and dedicated esports arenas. Its visitor guide lists attractions as well; for example, it showed Monopoly Lifesized from £59 through January 2027 when accessed on 8 October 2026. Prices and event dates can change, so confirm details on the attraction’s official page for your travel dates (Visit London: London’s games scene).
6. Brussels, Belgium: arcades, pinball, and gaming events
Visit Brussels’ guide, dated 3 November 2025, describes venues such as GameState and Smash Arcade, game bars, and the Brussels Pinball Museum. Despite its name, the guide clarifies that the pinball venue is a games room rather than a museum. It also presents GameForce as a video-game fair featuring new and retro games, VR, cosplay, esports, hardware, and merchandise. Check venue operations and event dates against your itinerary (Visit Brussels: Pop and geek culture in Brussels).
7. Madrid, Spain: a gaming campus
Madrid In Game is a four-pavilion campus covering 4,500 square metres, according to Tourism Madrid. Its functions include development, esports, experiences, and discovery. Tourism Madrid says the Discovery Centre opened on 11 February 2026 and offers VR and AR gaming-related experiences; advance booking is required for experiences. Because opening and booking arrangements are operational details, verify public access and reservations on the city’s current page before you go (Tourism Madrid: Madrid In Game. Campus del Videojuego).

8. Prague, Czechia: play a game about the city
Playing Prague, from Prague City Tourism, turns local landmarks into a city-building game. The page describes 16 levels featuring sites such as the Old Town Hall, the towers of Charles Bridge, and Prague Castle. It is available for PC and Mac as well as mobile, and the page reports that the mobile game won the 2025 CEEGA Best Mobile Game award. It works as a playful introduction to the city, not a substitute for navigating its streets or using a walking guide (Prague City Tourism: Playing Prague).
9. Dubai, UAE: social VR, console, and PC gaming
The City Gaming Center in Al Quoz is a venue-focused stop rather than a historic gaming district. Visit Dubai describes VR experiences, PlayStation 5 and PC gaming stations, esports, private gaming rooms, a pool zone, and a cafe. Confirm the venue’s current operation and available activities directly before making it part of your plans (Visit Dubai: The City Gaming Center).
10. Los Angeles, California: a franchise-themed park visit
Visit California lists SUPER NINTENDO WORLD at Universal Studios Hollywood as an attraction for Los Angeles visitors. It is a franchise-focused option that can anchor a day at the park, not evidence that gaming attractions define the whole city. Check the park’s current access and ticket arrangements before travelling (Visit California: Los Angeles).

Also consider geography: a listed attraction may be a city-area destination rather than a central district, and some options require a separate ticket or timed booking. Compare the experience you want with how much travel and advance planning it adds to your trip.
