What makes a choice difficult in The Witcher 3?
The game’s consequential choices vary in scale. Some shape a quest or a character’s later scenes; others affect the main story’s ending or the political future of the North. That distinction matters: not every tense conversation is an irreversible, game-wide turning point.

Should you free the spirit in the Whispering Hillock?
Why it is difficult
The Whispering Hillock branch is one of the clearest moral dilemmas in the game because the spirit’s fate is tied to the Crones’ demands, the village, the orphans, and the Bloody Baron’s family quest. The decision is not a clean choice between rescuing everyone and condemning one villain. Different people and places can be affected, and the result depends in part on when the spirit is dealt with and how the linked quests progress.
How to think about the tradeoff
Consider whose account you trust, which immediate harm you are willing to risk, and whether you are prioritizing the children, the village, or the Baron’s family. The branch is deliberately unsettling: an apparent rescue can carry costs elsewhere, and the Baron’s outcome is conditional rather than a simple direct reward for one dialogue option.
For that reason, avoid treating the choice as a straightforward “good” or “bad” answer. If you want to see every variant, use a detailed quest walkthrough; the broad decision summaries do not establish every outcome for every quest order.
Which choices affect Ciri’s ending?

Ciri’s fate reflects a set of decisions throughout the main story. The relevant moments communicate trust and agency: how Geralt responds when she is under pressure matters more than selecting a single last-minute answer. What that means for your playthrough
Do not reduce the outcome to a morality score or assume the game will always reveal the long-term consequence in advance. If you want to support Ciri, pay attention to moments where she can act for herself and to whether Geralt’s response treats her as capable. There is no universally correct ending; the question is what kind of future you want for her and what kind of support you believe she needs.
Who should rule the North: Radovid, Nilfgaard, or Dijkstra?
The northern-war branch is the broadest political decision here. Its outcomes concern Radovid’s rule, Dijkstra’s rule, and the larger war, making its stakes different from Ciri’s personal ending. The choice is best understood as a set of tradeoffs in political control, human cost, and loyalty—not as a quiz with one objectively right answer.
