The Tournament is a late-game side quest in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, unlocked through Shinbakufu story progression. Complete at least seven Shinbakufu target questlines—including the Onryo Samurai defeated in the prologue—then find Gyoji near the Hideout and travel to Ominesanji Temple for five arena duels.
How to unlock The Tournament
Game8 reports that the quest becomes available after you complete at least seven Shinbakufu target questlines. The Onryo Samurai defeated during the prologue counts toward that total. Once the requirement is met, leave the Hideout area and look for the quest marker or an NPC near the entrance; guide descriptions differ on Gyoji’s exact position. Speaking with the quest giver starts the quest and provides the Tournament Invitation.
If the quest does not appear, check your Shinbakufu target progress first. This is a progression-gated side quest, not an activity available from the start.
Where to go and how to start the duels
- Travel to Ominesanji Temple in Yamato, southeast of Yoshino. If already unlocked, Ominesanji Kakurega or Ominesanji Overlook are nearby fast-travel points identified by Game8.
- At the temple, switch to Yasuke and speak with Gyoji near the ruined temple building to begin the event. Yasuke is a convenient recommendation for these direct combat encounters, but Method says Naoe can also complete the quest.
- Ring the bell beside the arena to begin each bout.
- After winning all five bouts, find Gyoji again and speak with him to collect the quest rewards.
If neither nearby fast-travel point is unlocked, approach through the mountainous routes around Yoshino and Mount Hakkyo, as Game8 describes.

Combat pointers
- Against Lady Masago, Method advises avoiding the end of her combo.
- Against Lord Hokuto, dodge his heavy attacks.
- Against Lord Unkai, Method recommends parrying his combo.
These are guide tactics rather than a guarantee of a particular outcome; adjust your timing to your character, gear, and play style.

What completing The Tournament unlocks
Game8 reports that finishing the quest grants 5,000 XP and unlocks two abilities: Naoe’s Triple Threat, which throws three shuriken for the cost of one, and Yasuke’s Constant Pressure, which lets Forward Momentum chain without requiring a hit confirmation. Defeating the final opponent is also associated with the Test Your Might trophy, as noted by Game8 and Method.
If Gyoji’s marker appears but you cannot interact
Ubisoft’s September 10, 2025 Title Update 1.1.1 release notes state: “Fixed an issue where players could not interact with Gyoji despite a blue marker being shown.” If you still encounter the problem, Ubisoft’s note confirms that this specific interaction issue was addressed in that update; it does not establish that every save or current bug is resolved.

Can you replay the Tournament?
Method says the main quest is not replayable in the same form. The arena may sometimes be reused for Animus objectives, but that is separate from replaying the original quest and its progression.
