The right handheld depends first on the games and storefront you want: Nintendo Switch 2 is a console built around Nintendo’s ecosystem, while Steam Deck OLED and SteamOS-powered Legion Go S bring PC game libraries to a handheld. This guide covers the 2025 handheld landscape using information available as of October 8, 2026; prices and availability vary by region and retailer.
Start with the games you want to play
Choose the platform before comparing screen size or processor specifications. A Nintendo-focused library points toward Switch 2; a Steam library points toward a PC handheld. They are different ecosystems, not interchangeable versions of the same device.
- Nintendo Switch 2: Plays Switch 2 game cards and supports compatible original Nintendo Switch games. Nintendo cautions that some Switch games may be unsupported or not fully compatible, so check the specific game before buying.
- Steam Deck OLED: A handheld PC with Steam library access. Individual PC games can vary in handheld compatibility and performance; verify the titles you care about rather than assuming every Steam game works well on the device.
- Legion Go S: Lenovo announced both Windows-based and SteamOS-powered configurations in January 2025. The SteamOS version was described as providing access to the Steam Store and library, along with cloud saves and Remote Play. Confirm which operating-system configuration is being sold before purchase.
Subscription libraries are another factor, not a substitute for checking compatibility. Xbox says Game Pass offers a growing PC and console library and cloud gaming on supported devices, with availability varying by plan. Check the exact device, country, plan terms, catalog, and cloud requirements at Xbox Game Pass.
How the leading options differ
| Device | Display | Storage and expansion | Battery estimate | Platform and notable details |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | 7.9-inch LCD; 1920 × 1080 handheld resolution; HDR10 and VRR up to 120 Hz | 256 GB internal UFS storage; microSD Express support up to 2 TB | About 2–6.5 hours, depending on games and usage; Nintendo estimate | Nintendo console; supports Switch 2 and compatible original Switch game cards; Wi-Fi 6 |
| Steam Deck OLED | 7.4-inch 1280 × 800 HDR OLED; refresh rate up to 90 Hz | 512 GB or 1 TB listed configurations | 3–12 hours depending on content; Valve estimate | Steam library access; Wi-Fi 6E; 1 TB configuration lists anti-glare etched glass; listed OLED configurations include a carrying case |
| Lenovo Legion Go S, January 2025 announcement | 8-inch WUXGA 16:10 display; up to 120 Hz | MicroSD reader; maximum internal storage not stated in the announcement | 55.5 Wh battery; runtime estimate not stated in the announcement | Windows-based configuration announced with selected AMD Ryzen Z2 Go or Z1 Extreme processors, up to 32 GB memory, and about 1.61 lb weight; a SteamOS-powered version was also announced |
Specifications describe different devices and do not establish which one performs better in a given game. For the Switch 2 figures and compatibility notes, see Nintendo’s Switch 2 technical specifications. Valve’s current listed configurations and hardware details are on the Steam Deck product page. Lenovo’s Go S details above refer to its January 2025 CES announcement, not a guarantee of present-day stock or final terms.

Choose the operating experience that suits you
For a console-first experience: Switch 2
Switch 2 is the clearest fit if you want Nintendo’s console ecosystem and games, with a device designed to move between handheld and at-home play. Its compatibility with original Switch games is not universal, so verify important titles individually. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa described it as “the next step in at-home gaming that can be taken on the go,” a statement of Nintendo’s positioning rather than an independent assessment. See the launch announcement for that context.
For Steam and PC flexibility: Steam Deck OLED
Steam Deck OLED is a fit for players who want Steam access in a portable form and are comfortable with a PC-oriented device. Valve describes it as “Powerful, portable PC gaming, designed for comfort and a console-like user experience.” It supports USB-C charging and peripherals, and can connect to a larger screen through a USB-C hub or dock. Those options make it adaptable, but accessories and game compatibility should be checked against the specific setup and title.
For a larger-screen PC handheld: Legion Go S
The announced Legion Go S combines an 8-inch screen with a choice of operating system configurations. A Windows model and a SteamOS model imply different software workflows, even where both can serve PC gaming needs. Lenovo’s January 2025 announcement described Legion Go 2 as a prototype with production details still being refined; treat that as historical announcement context, not a current purchase specification.

Understand battery estimates before comparing them
Nintendo estimates Switch 2 battery life at approximately 2–6.5 hours, depending on games and usage. Valve lists 3–12 hours for Steam Deck OLED depending on content. These are manufacturer estimates, not results from a shared, standardized test, so they do not establish that one device lasts longer under the same conditions. A demanding 3D game, screen settings, wireless use, and other workload differences can all affect handheld runtime.

That is a separate lighter-use description, not an independent test or a replacement for the broader 3–12-hour estimate. Neither manufacturer figure guarantees how long a particular game session will last.
Check storage and expansion carefully
Switch 2 requires microSD Express for game storage expansion
Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage and supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. An ordinary microSD card does not expand Switch 2 game storage: Nintendo says non-Express cards can only copy screenshots and videos from the original Switch. If the purpose is installing more Switch 2 games, buy a card explicitly identified as microSD Express and confirm its capacity and compatibility.

Steam Deck OLED offers two listed capacities
Valve lists 512 GB and 1 TB OLED configurations. Consider the size of the games you expect to install and whether you plan to keep multiple large titles available offline. Check the exact configuration and its current availability when shopping.
Legion Go S expansion details depend on the model
Lenovo’s cited announcement specifies a microSD reader but does not state a maximum capacity or full storage configurations. Check the exact model’s specifications rather than assuming a capacity or card standard from another handheld.
Compare comfort, screen, and travel setup
Screen size alone does not determine which handheld is more comfortable. Switch 2 has a 7.9-inch LCD, Steam Deck OLED a 7.4-inch OLED, and the announced Legion Go S an 8-inch display. Panel type, resolution, aspect ratio, refresh rate, device weight, control layout, and how long you hold the device all matter. Try the controls in person if possible, especially if weight or grip comfort is a priority; specifications cannot settle that personal fit.

Think about where you will play. Steam Deck OLED can use USB-C for charging and peripherals and connect to a larger display with a compatible hub or dock. Lenovo’s announcement lists a microSD reader on Go S. For any PC handheld hub, charger, or power bank, confirm model compatibility, power delivery, and cable requirements. Valve lists a carrying case with its OLED configurations, so an additional case is useful only if you need different protection or extra capacity; verify fit for the exact device.
For audio, Valve documents headset support. Switch 2 includes a CTIA 3.5 mm audio jack, though Nintendo cautions that functionality is not guaranteed for every product. Check the headset connection and device compatibility before purchase.
Account for the full cost, not just the hardware
Retail prices and availability vary by country, seller, and date, so check current local listings rather than treating a launch price as today’s price. Nintendo announced U.S. launch-era suggested prices of $449.99 for Switch 2 and $499.99 for the Mario Kart World bundle in 2025; those are historical launch figures, not current price quotes. Add the cost of the games you want, any subscription that actually includes them, and storage or accessories you need. Do not assume that a subscription catalog includes a particular game or that cloud play is supported on your device and plan.
A practical decision checklist
- Write down the games you most want to play. Identify their storefront and check game-specific compatibility on the exact handheld.
- Pick the operating style. Choose a console ecosystem for a focused console experience, or a PC handheld if Steam access and PC-oriented flexibility are priorities.
- Compare the physical fit. Consider display size and panel, device weight, controls, and whether you will mostly play at home, while traveling, or docked.
- Estimate your real storage need. Check internal capacity and the correct expansion standard for that model; for Switch 2 game storage, that means microSD Express.
- Plan around workload, not a headline battery number. Treat manufacturer estimates as ranges and consider the games and settings you expect to use.
- Check current local cost. Compare today’s device price with game purchases, any suitable plan subscription, and essential accessories.
- Verify the exact configuration. Confirm operating system, processor, storage, included case or accessories, availability, and regional terms before ordering.
What market growth does—and does not—tell you
Omdia estimated that 19.3 million units of dedicated handheld gaming hardware were sold through to consumers globally in 2023 and forecast 29.3 million units by 2028. The 2028 figure is a forecast, not a realized result. Omdia describes handhelds as adjacent to PC, console, and mobile markets; the figures provide market context, not proof that every handheld competes for the same games or buyer.
