The Walking Dead: The Final Season brings Clementine’s long-running story to its conclusion across four episodes. It also became the last Walking Dead game completed by Telltale’s existing developers: after the studio shut down during production, Skybound Games brought former Telltale staff back to finish it. That is an end of an era for this game and its creators, not the end of the wider Walking Dead franchise.
What is The Walking Dead: The Final Season?
It is a four-episode, single-player adventure game published by Skybound Games and developed by Telltale Games. The Xbox Store lists its release date as August 14, 2018, and identifies the season as containing four episodes: Xbox Store listing.
The story follows Clementine and AJ after years on the road. They reach a secluded school that might become a home, but the central question is not simply whether they can stay safe. Clementine must decide what kind of life to build there—and help AJ learn how to survive without losing sight of how to live.
How does the season bring Clementine’s story full circle?
Earlier in the series, Lee protected and guided Clementine. Now she is responsible for AJ, and her role echoes Lee’s. Season lead writer James Windeler described the change as a natural completion of her arc: “For us, it was natural and inevitable that she come full circle and step into Lee’s shoes.” He made the comment in a PlayStation.Blog interview published August 2, 2018: PlayStation.Blog interview with James Windeler.

That reversal gives the season its emotional center. Clementine is no longer only reacting to danger; she is deciding which lessons to pass on, and which parts of her own experience AJ should not have to repeat. Windeler framed the dilemma as a question beyond survival: “What is the right way to live?”
What do choices and combat add to the story?
Players shape Clementine’s present-day character and influence AJ’s developing ethics through decisions. Xbox Wire described the game as “choice-driven storytelling full of decisions that can branch the narrative,” alongside unscripted combat and an over-the-shoulder orbital camera. The combination makes the season’s choices relevant to both immediate danger and longer-term relationships. Combat presents threats in the moment; decisions test what Clementine teaches AJ about trust, responsibility, and the compromises of life in the school community.
How did Skybound finish the game after Telltale shut down?
Telltale shut down while the final two episodes were still in production. In an interview published April 16, 2019, creative director Kent Mudle and Skybound Games CEO Ian Howe described how Skybound paused to handle legal arrangements, then brought former Telltale developers back to complete the season. At the time of the shutdown, Mudle said Episode 3 was about halfway through development: its voicework had been recorded and its visuals were in rough form. Episode 4 had completed an initial round of voicework.

Howe recounted that, in a meeting about the project, Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman said, “let’s just go get the story finished.” The quote is Howe’s reported account of Kirkman’s words, not a direct interview quotation. Mudle also said the season had been intended as the last Walking Dead game and a final tribute to Telltale’s “classic style” of choices and waiting. That describes the developers’ intent for this project at the time; it does not establish the current status of the franchise.

Which platforms and editions should you check?
The Xbox Store provides a digital listing for the four-episode game. Secondary reporting has also described physical editions for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, released March 26, 2019. According to that reporting, the season-pass disc included the first three episodes and provided access to download the remaining episode. Because this is not confirmed here by an official platform listing, check the precise edition and region before purchasing a physical copy: MobyGames release information.
- Buying a used copy: Ask whether the fourth episode is accessible and whether the original download method still works for your account and region.
- Buying a sealed copy: Do not assume that a sealed disc or cartridge contains every episode on the physical media. Verify the package contents and any download requirement with the seller.
