The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is an island-and-dungeon action-adventure built around exploration, sword fighting, puzzle solving and items that gradually open new routes. Your first priorities are learning how wind changes sailing speed, keeping a reliable bearing across the Great Sea, and using targeting to create safe openings in combat.
This guide separates the original 2003 Nintendo GameCube release from The Wind Waker HD on Wii U. The sailing controls below come from Nintendo’s Wii U HD manual; GameCube button labels should not be assumed to match.

What kind of game is The Wind Waker?
You travel between named islands, enter dungeons, fight enemies, solve environmental puzzles and collect items that let you reach places that were previously inaccessible. The boat is not just transportation: sailing is how the world is connected, and several objectives require you to read the sea, identify an island or locate something beneath the surface.

Which version are you playing?
| Version | Platform and date | Important context |
|---|---|---|
| The Wind Waker | Nintendo GameCube; original release in 2003 | Uses the GameCube controller and the original presentation. |
| The Wind Waker HD | Nintendo Wii U; launched in 2013 | 1080p presentation, Wii U GamePad features, a purchasable Swift Sail, Hero Mode and a changed Triforce collection event. |
Nintendo’s 2013 launch announcement described the HD edition as available in retail and through the Wii U eShop at launch. Nintendo later stated that the Wii U eShop stopped accepting purchases on March 27, 2023, so the eShop is not a current purchase route. A physical copy must match your console: a Wii U HD disc is not the GameCube version, and a GameCube disc is not the Wii U HD edition.
In a Nintendo creator interview, producer Eiji Aonuma said first-time players could regard the HD release “not as a remake but as a brand new The Legend of Zelda game reborn for the world today.” The same interview described the ship’s speed as doubled and the map as usable on the Wii U GamePad. Those are Nintendo’s comments about the HD adjustments, not an independent timing test.
How sailing works in the Wii U HD edition
The central rule is simple: ordinary sailing is faster with the wind and slower against it. Set the sail, point the boat in the direction the wind is blowing when you need speed, and accept a slower crossing when your destination lies upwind. The Wii U manual identifies the controls below.

| Steer | Use the left stick | Turn the boat toward your destination or into the prevailing wind. |
| Cruise | Hold ZR with the sail down | Moves without wind affecting the boat; useful when you want predictable travel. |
| Slow or stop | Hold B | Brings a stopped or moving boat under control before boarding, lining up a salvage spot or approaching an island. |
| Board the boat | Press A beside the boat | Use when you are in the water next to your boat. |
| Leave a stopped boat | Press B | Disembark when the boat is stationary and you want to swim or step onto a nearby location. |
These labels are for the Wii U HD edition. Do not transfer them to the GameCube controller without checking the manual for that release.

A dependable sailing routine
- Stop and establish your destination. Look at the sea chart and identify the named island or area you are trying to reach. If you are unsure, stop rather than drifting while you decide.
- Raise the sail with A. Once the boat is moving, use the left stick to set a broad heading.
- Use the wind for speed. When the destination is downwind or across the wind, adjust your heading so the wind helps rather than fights you. A direct line is not always the fastest line.
- Use cruise when wind is a nuisance. Hold ZR with the sail down when you want movement that is not changed by the wind. This is useful for a controlled approach or a long stretch where you do not want to keep correcting your heading.
- Brake before the final approach. Hold B to slow or stop near an island, a salvage location or the place where you intend to disembark.
- Board or leave deliberately. Press A beside the boat to board. With a stopped boat, press B to leave it.
Time continues to pass while you sail. The moon symbol in the lower-left corner shows the time of day, so check it when an objective or route feels different after a long crossing. The changing sky is also a useful reminder that you have been travelling for a while and may want to stop at the next safe landmark.
Finding your way across the Great Sea
The Great Sea is easier to navigate when you use a repeatable process instead of steering toward a vague horizon. The sea chart is your reference, while named islands are your landmarks. Before leaving, identify the destination, note which islands or corners of the chart lie along the route, and use those features to correct your heading.
Orient by landmarks, not by guesswork
- Choose a named island or chart location as your immediate destination, even if your larger objective is somewhere else.
- After each major change in direction, check that the island you expect is still the one ahead of you.
- If the horizon becomes confusing, stop the boat, consult the chart and start again rather than sailing randomly.
- Use cruise control for a steady approach when wind keeps pushing you off a careful line.
- When you reach an island, remember its name and position. Returning to a known landmark is much easier than searching the entire sea again.
What to do when you lose your bearing
- Hold B until the boat is under control.
- Read the sea chart and identify the last island or location you can positively recognize.
- Pick one visible or charted landmark and sail toward it instead of attempting to correct several directions at once.
- Use the wind-assisted heading for ordinary speed, or hold ZR to cruise if constant wind correction is making the approach worse.
- Once you have confirmed your position, set the next short destination.
This method avoids a common beginner mistake: continuing to sail because the boat is moving, even though the player no longer knows where the boat is. A short, controlled leg is more useful than a long crossing without a confirmed bearing.

Use the time display as information
The moon icon in the lower-left of the Wii U manual’s interface description indicates the time of day. Sailing does not pause the clock. Treat that display as a planning tool: if you have been crossing the sea for a long time, check the time before beginning a difficult landing, an unfamiliar island search or an activity that depends on seeing what is around you.

Salvage: finding objects beneath the boat
Salvage is an acquired-tool activity rather than a basic sailing action. After you obtain the Grappling Hook, pressing R turns it into a salvage crane. This is the point at which underwater targets become part of your normal sea routine.
- Travel to the shining spot on the water.
- Slow or stop the boat so you can line up over the location.
- Press and hold A to lower the crane.
- As the boat gets close, the visual marker disappears. Listen for its ringing instead of relying only on the glow.
- Keep the crane lowered while the boat reaches the target, following the sound to confirm that you are in the right place.
The disappearing marker is not a failure message. It is a cue to switch from visual tracking to audio. If you miss the spot, stop, reposition the boat and try again rather than swinging the boat in a wide circle.
Salvage troubleshooting
- No crane appears: make sure you have acquired the Grappling Hook; ordinary sailing equipment cannot perform salvage.
- The marker vanished: listen for the ringing and keep the crane lowered as you approach.
- You drift past the spot: hold B, regain a stable position and make a shorter approach.
- You cannot board after searching: move beside the boat and press A in the Wii U HD controls.
Combat fundamentals for a first playthrough
Nintendo presents combat as one of the game’s core activities alongside item use and puzzle solving. The safest beginner pattern is to manage one opponent with targeting, watch for an opening, then use the sword or the acquired item that fits the situation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTarget first, then choose your response
- Target the immediate threat. Keeping attention on one enemy makes its position and movement easier to read, especially when more than one opponent is present.
- Observe before attacking. Let the enemy show its attack or defensive posture. A rushed swing can leave you exposed; an opening gives you time to strike and retreat.
- Use the sword when the opening is clear. Stay close enough to connect, but do not continue attacking after the enemy has regained control.
- Switch to an acquired item when the enemy or environment calls for it. Items are not merely collectibles. They can change how you approach a fight or solve the obstacle around it.
- Reposition after each exchange. If another enemy enters the fight, create space and retarget rather than continuing the same attack pattern.
The surfaced official material does not provide a complete button-by-button combat passage for both GameCube and Wii U. For that reason, this guide does not assign unverified buttons to targeting, sword techniques or item actions. Use the controls shown by your own edition’s manual and on-screen prompts; the strategic sequence above applies to the combat system without pretending that the two controllers use identical labels.

How to approach a new enemy
- Identify whether the enemy is approaching, guarding, circling or preparing an attack.
- Keep the camera and target under control before committing to a strike.
- Try the sword first if the opponent presents a straightforward opening.
- If the sword is ineffective or unsafe, consider an item you have already acquired that interacts with the enemy or the surrounding area.
- After the exchange, reassess. Do not assume the same response works for every enemy or every phase of a fight.
Combat in dungeons
Dungeons combine fighting with navigation and puzzles. When a room seems to demand a battle, look at the objects around it as well as the enemy. A newly acquired item may be relevant to both the room’s puzzle and the fight inside it. If progress stops, record the location and continue exploring rather than repeatedly attacking an enemy with the wrong tool.
Items, islands and progress without spoilers
Exploration is deliberately cumulative. An island may contain an obstacle that cannot be solved on your first visit, while a dungeon may award the item that makes a previously noticed route usable. You do not need to memorize every inaccessible object; you do need to remember where the game made you curious.
A practical note-taking checklist
- Write down the name of an island where you saw a blocked entrance or unusual object.
- Record a sea location where a salvage marker or other point of interest appeared.
- When you obtain a new item, think back to earlier places where its function might apply.
- Use the chart and island names to organize return trips instead of searching by visual memory alone.
- If a puzzle seems impossible, verify that you are using the relevant acquired item before assuming the game is asking for a hidden trick.
This approach keeps the discovery intact while preventing the most common form of frustration: forgetting an earlier location and assuming the game has no route forward.
What the HD changes mean for beginners
The Wii U edition is not simply a resolution upgrade. Nintendo’s launch material lists 1080p graphics, GamePad features, the Swift Sail, Hero Mode and an altered Triforce collection event. These changes affect convenience, difficulty and progression, but none is a prerequisite for understanding the opening hours.

| HD feature | What Nintendo’s material establishes | Beginner implication |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p presentation | The HD edition offers 1080p graphics. | Visual clarity is part of the Wii U version’s presentation, not a feature of the original GameCube release. |
| GamePad map features | The map can be placed on the Wii U GamePad, according to Nintendo’s interview. | You can use the handheld display as a navigation aid while playing on the main screen. |
| Swift Sail | Nintendo’s launch announcement describes it as a purchasable HD-edition addition. | It is an optional convenience in the HD context, not a control rule you must learn before sailing normally. |
| Hero Mode | Enemy attacks deal twice the damage and health-restoring hearts do not appear. | It is a deliberately harsher setting; a first-time player can begin without it. |
| Triforce collection change | Nintendo describes a changed collection event in the HD edition. | Progression details differ from the GameCube version, so guides written for one edition may not map perfectly onto the other. |
If you are following a control guide, confirm its platform before copying a button instruction. A Wii U HD manual is authoritative for Wii U controls, while a GameCube player should consult the original release’s documentation.
Common beginner problems and fixes
“The boat is moving, but I am getting nowhere.”
Check the wind before changing the destination. Ordinary sailing slows when you head against it. Turn to use the wind, or hold ZR with the sail down to cruise without wind affecting the boat.
“I cannot tell where I am.”
Hold B, read the chart, identify the last named island you recognized and choose one short landmark-based leg. Avoid steering continuously while guessing.
“The salvage spot disappeared.”
That is expected when the boat gets close. Hold A to keep the crane down and listen for the ringing while you make a controlled approach.
“An enemy keeps beating me.”
Stop repeating attacks. Target the opponent, observe its opening, use the sword or a relevant acquired item, then reposition. If your guide gives a button sequence, verify that it belongs to your edition before following it.
“A guide’s buttons do not match my controller.”
Check whether the guide is for GameCube or Wii U HD. Nintendo’s Wii U manual uses A, B, R, ZR and the left stick in the sailing instructions; those labels should not be silently applied to GameCube.
Quick Recap
Starting checklist
- Confirm whether you are playing the 2003 GameCube version or the Wii U HD edition.
- Learn the Wii U HD sailing basics if applicable: A raises the sail, the left stick steers, ZR cruises with the sail down and B slows or stops.
- Before a crossing, choose a named island or chart location as your immediate destination.
- Use wind-assisted sailing for speed and cruise control for predictable movement.
- Watch the moon symbol in the lower-left because time passes at sea.
- After obtaining the Grappling Hook, use R for the salvage crane and rely on ringing when the marker disappears.
- In combat, target one opponent, wait for an opening and select the sword or acquired item that fits the situation.
- Keep notes about blocked routes, unusual objects and salvage locations so new items can turn earlier mysteries into progress.
