If The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt stutters, drops frames, or feels unusually choppy on PS5, start with heat, airflow, background downloads, and a restart. Then try CD PROJEKT RED’s full power-cycle procedure to clear the console cache. These symptoms do not, by themselves, identify a specific fault, and the publisher’s guidance does not establish a guaranteed graphics-mode fix.
Start with checks that don’t risk your save data
Check airflow and heat
Make sure the PS5 has open airflow and is not overheating. In particular, check that the rear of the console is not very close to a wall or another surface. This is a placement and condition check, not evidence that the console has a failing fan or that moving it will guarantee a frame-rate improvement. CD PROJEKT RED’s performance checklist includes overheating and airflow among the possible factors.
Look for dust, dirt, or disc damage
Check around the console for dust or dirt, especially near the rear. If you play from a physical disc, inspect it for visible damage. The publisher’s guidance does not specify a cleaning product or a disc-repair method; don’t open the console or apply liquids based on this checklist.
Pause background downloads
Check whether downloads are running while you play. If they are, pause them or let them finish, then see whether the game feels smoother. This is a useful check, not proof that downloads caused the problem.

Restart the game and console
After using Rest Mode
If the PS5 has been in Rest Mode, fully restart the console before testing again. CD PROJEKT RED says sleep mode does not clear the cache and may contribute to performance issues. A restart is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix.
After a long play session
Close and restart The Witcher 3 after a long session. The publisher recommends restarting the game to clear memory and potentially improve performance. Check whether the stuttering returns during a fresh session.

Power cycle the PS5 to clear its cache
If the checks and restarts have not helped, follow the publisher’s power-cycle procedure. This is different from putting the console in Rest Mode: the PS5 must be fully off before you disconnect it.
- Turn the PS5 fully off; do not select Rest Mode.
- Wait until the console’s lights have turned completely off.
- Unplug the power cable and leave it disconnected for at least two minutes.
- Reconnect the cable and turn the PS5 on.
CD PROJEKT RED says power cycling can help troubleshoot performance issues, crashes, and black screens, and that this procedure does not erase games or data. Do not unplug a console while it is still running.

Report persistent stuttering with useful details
If the problem continues, send it to CD PROJEKT RED through its performance support form. The form asks for details that can help distinguish one setup from another:
- PS5 model
- Graphics mode
- Whether the copy is boxed (physical) or digital
- Game edition
- Installed game version
- A short description of when and how the issue happens
Note the version shown in the game’s main menu and check for updates on your console. The form’s displayed version options differ by path, so do not assume that one version label on the form is the current latest version. If possible, attach a short video that shows the stutter or frame drop.

What these steps can—and can’t—establish
CD PROJEKT RED’s official guidance points players toward system conditions, background activity, restarts, and cache clearing. The pages do not establish one confirmed PS5-specific stuttering defect or a guaranteed fix through a particular graphics mode. If the issue remains after the steps above, report the exact conditions rather than treating a symptom as a diagnosis.
