CD PROJEKT RED confirms Performance and Ray Tracing modes for both consoles, with targets of 60 and 30 FPS respectively. Those targets come from the earlier next-gen feature notes, not matched measurements of the Remastered build.
Which version is this comparison about?
CD PROJEKT RED released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on September 29, 2026, as a free upgrade for qualifying owners on supported platforms, including PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The studio describes it as bringing visual and performance modernizations. A hotfix for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Play Anywhere PC was reported on October 1, but that report does not establish which console performs better.
This distinction matters: the most useful independent PS5-versus-Series-X technical analysis available here was published in December 2022 and covers the earlier next-gen release, not the 2026 Remastered build after its hotfix. It cannot support a current console winner.
What modes and frame-rate targets do both consoles offer?
CD PROJEKT RED’s official next-gen update notes list two modes on PS5 and Xbox Series X. Both use dynamic resolution scaling, and the FPS figures are targets rather than guarantees of a locked frame rate.

| Mode | Officially described behavior | Target on PS5 and Xbox Series X |
|---|---|---|
| Performance | Smoother gameplay with dynamic resolution scaling | 60 FPS |
| Ray Tracing | Ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion, with dynamic resolution scaling | 30 FPS |
The official notes describe mode targets; they do not provide platform-by-platform measured frame rates, frame pacing, or a guarantee of native resolution. A 60 FPS target therefore does not by itself prove that either console maintains 60 FPS in every scene.
What did the earlier PS5-versus-Series-X test find?
Digital Foundry’s December 21, 2022 analysis examined the earlier next-gen build. It reported that Ray Tracing mode fell well below its 30 FPS target, particularly on PS5, and discussed higher input latency and crashes on both consoles. These are dated observations about that release; they are not measurements of the Remastered edition launched in September 2026.

That historical result is useful context for understanding the original mode trade-off, but it should not be used as a current ranking. The available evidence does not provide a version-matched post-hotfix comparison of the Remastered build’s frame rates, resolution, frame pacing, or matched-scene image quality on base PS5 and Xbox Series X.
What visual differences are actually established?
For the earlier next-gen feature set, Ray Tracing mode adds ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion, while Performance mode prioritizes a higher frame-rate target. CD PROJEKT RED says Remastered modernizes visuals and performance, but the sources available here do not quantify how those changes compare between the two base consoles.

Keep PS5 Pro separate from base PS5: the studio specifically identifies PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) support for PS5 Pro. That feature does not establish a visual or performance advantage for the base PS5 over Xbox Series X.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a mode while the current head-to-head is unsettled
- Choose Performance mode if your priority is smoother gameplay and a higher frame-rate target; the official target for both consoles is 60 FPS.
- Choose Ray Tracing mode if you prefer the listed ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion and accept the lower 30 FPS target.
These are choices between the modes described in the official next-gen notes, not proof of a Remastered-specific performance result. If you are deciding between consoles, compare tests that identify the exact Remastered build and hotfix, use the same mode and scene, and distinguish base PS5 from PS5 Pro.

Does the physical Complete Edition tell you which version you will get?
A physical The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition release for PS5 and Xbox Series X was announced in 2023. Separately, CD PROJEKT RED describes the 2026 Remastered edition as a free upgrade for qualifying existing owners. The announcement does not establish that a physical Complete Edition disc is itself a separate Remastered edition; check the live product listing and the upgrade terms for your copy before buying on that basis.
