To move a PS4 save into The Witcher 3 PS5 next-gen version, use the game’s cross-progression feature: update the PS4 game to patch 4.04, link it to a CD PROJEKT RED account, create a save and check for its cloud icon, then link the same account on PS5 and load the save. If you only want to keep playing the PS4 version on a PS5, use the separate backward-compatibility transfer options instead.
Choose the transfer route for the version you want to play
These are two different processes. In-game cross progression transfers a save to the PS5 next-gen version. System-level transfer options let you continue using the PS4 version on a PS5.

Transfer a PS4 save to the PS5 next-gen version

Update the PS4 game to patch 4.04. CD PROJEKT RED says the patch number appears on the game’s main menu beneath the title. Follow its PS4-to-PS5 next-gen transfer instructions.

Link your CD PROJEKT RED account on PS4. Open My Rewards in the game and follow the prompts to connect your account.

Create the save you want to transfer. Cross progression is enabled by default after account linking. The specific PS4-to-PS5 instructions call for creating a new save; after it uploads, look for a cloud icon beside its name.

Open the PS5 next-gen version. Choose My Rewards and connect the game to the same CD PROJEKT RED account you used on PS4.

Load the uploaded save. Open Load Game on PS5 and select the save.
CD PROJEKT RED’s cross-progression guide says the latest saves upload automatically once cross progression is enabled. It also lists Options → Gameplay → Cross Progression as the setting where the feature can be toggled.

Continue the PS4 version on PS5 instead
If you are playing the PS4 edition through backward compatibility, you do not use the PS5 next-gen version’s CD PROJEKT RED account-linking procedure. CD PROJEKT RED says PS4 saves are compatible when continuing the PS4 game on PS5 with the same PlayStation account. Its backward-compatibility save guide lists these transfer routes:
- Upload the saves using PlayStation Plus cloud storage.
- Transfer data between consoles over LAN or Wi-Fi.
- Use compatible storage to copy saves to the same PSN account on PS5.
Sony’s PS5 Quick Start Guide gives general instructions for transferring console data over the same network and says a USB drive used as PS4 extended storage can continue to be used on PS5. That console guidance is separate from the in-game cross-progression method for the PS5 next-gen version.

If the save does not appear
- For the next-gen transfer, verify the PS4 game is on patch 4.04 and that the cloud icon appears beside the save you created.
- Check that both game versions are linked to the same CD PROJEKT RED account.
- On PS5, look under Load Game for the uploaded save.
- If you meant to continue with the PS4 version on PS5, use that route’s transfer options and the same PlayStation account.
CD PROJEKT RED’s PlayStation support index lists a separate article for cross-progression saves that cannot be loaded. For an error-specific recovery procedure, consult that support article rather than applying a fix intended for a different transfer route.
