The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered drew a sharp jump in activity after launching on September 29, 2026. SteamDB recorded 137,724 players online at once on Steam on October 4, while analytics firm Alinea Analytics estimated about 2.4 million daily active users and 130,000 copies sold across Steam, PlayStation and Xbox on the day after launch. Those are different measurements: one Steam peak, one cross-platform daily audience estimate and one estimated sales day.
What happened after The Witcher 3 Remastered launched?
CD PROJEKT RED released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on September 29, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. The release includes the previously published Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions. The publisher says the remaster is a free download for anyone who owns the base game (CD PROJEKT RED).
The launch coincided with a notable return of activity around the 2015 RPG. SteamDB’s chart recorded a new Steam all-time concurrent-player peak of 137,724 on October 4, 2026 (SteamDB). Separately, Alinea Analytics estimated that the game reached about 2.4 million daily active users across Steam, PlayStation and Xbox on October 1, the day after launch—more than ten times its estimated 2026 daily average (Alinea Analytics).
What the player numbers measure
Steam’s 137,724-player peak
The SteamDB figure is a count of people playing simultaneously on Steam at the peak, not the number who played over a full day. It also says nothing by itself about activity on PlayStation, Xbox or Switch 2. A prior report from PC Gamer cited a Steam peak of 123,359 on October 3; SteamDB’s October 4 reading later set the higher record (PC Gamer).

Alinea’s estimated cross-platform daily audience
Alinea Analytics put the October 1 daily active-user split at 48.6% on Steam, 40.4% on PlayStation and 11.0% on Xbox. The stated estimate covers those three platforms; it does not include Nintendo Switch 2. “Daily active users” is not a count of confirmed returning players, so the estimate supports a large audience surge but cannot establish that every active player was returning to the game.
What “sales skyrocket” means—and what it does not
Alinea Analytics estimated about 130,000 copies sold across Steam, PlayStation and Xbox on October 1. The firm described it as the game’s largest daily sales result since its first $3.99 Steam discount in summer 2024. This is a third-party estimate for one day, not an audited publisher report or a sales total for a separately purchased remaster.

That distinction matters because existing owners receive the remaster, including both expansions, as a free download. The sales estimate therefore reflects copies of the game sold across the platforms Alinea tracked; it should not be read as 130,000 paid remaster upgrades.

CD PROJEKT RED’s first-half 2026 announcement put The Witcher 3 at more than 65 million copies sold and the franchise at more than 90 million (CD PROJEKT RED). In its October 1 newsletter, Alinea Analytics estimated that the game had since exceeded 66 million copies (Alinea Analytics). The former is the publisher’s reported cumulative figure; the latter is a newer analyst estimate, not an official updated publisher total.

CD PROJEKT RED CFO Piotr Nielubowicz said in commentary on the company’s first-quarter 2026 results that the game had “just crossed another spectacular sales threshold: 65 million copies,” as quoted by PC Gamer (PC Gamer).
Do existing owners need to buy it again?
No. According to CD PROJEKT RED, owners of the base game can download the remaster for free, with both expansions included. If you are new to the game, check the current edition and platform listing to confirm that it includes the content you want; current prices and store availability vary and are not established by the figures above.
