Short answer: Microsoft’s Xbox PC app can now bring many games from Xbox, PC Game Pass, and supported third-party PC storefronts into one library and launch them from one interface. It is not, however, a complete replacement for Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, Ubisoft Connect, or the other clients that handle ownership, installation, authentication, updates, DRM, and game-specific services.
The change is best understood as a cross-store library aggregator and launcher shell. Microsoft delivered the core Aggregated Gaming Library in 2025, then added manual executable entries and expanded Xbox Mode during 2026. Those features make the app particularly useful on Windows handhelds, but “universal launcher” remains shorthand—not a promise that every game can be installed or managed through Xbox.

What Microsoft actually changed
The Xbox PC app’s biggest change is that it no longer has to show only Xbox games and PC Game Pass titles. Microsoft’s Aggregated Gaming Library can detect games installed through supported PC storefronts and place them in My Library and Most Recent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThat creates one visual starting point for games that may otherwise be scattered across several launchers. Select a title in Xbox and the app can open it, even when the game was installed through another store.

But four separate functions are being confused under the “universal launcher” label:
- Library aggregation: Xbox detects supported installed games and lists them together.
- Launching: Xbox provides a common shortcut and launch surface.
- Installing and purchasing: These generally remain tied to the original store, publisher, or subscription.
- Manual additions: You can reportedly add individual Windows executables when automatic detection fails.
Xbox Mode is another related, but distinct, feature. It is a controller-first Windows interface built around the unified library—not the library integration itself.
The Xbox launcher timeline
| Date | Change |
|---|---|
| June 23, 2025 | Microsoft began previewing the Aggregated Gaming Library with PC Gaming Preview participants. |
| September 15, 2025 | The aggregated library became broadly available, combining Xbox titles with supported third-party installations. |
| March 16, 2026 | Windows Central reported that the app gained manual Windows .exe additions, including custom names, icons, and launch arguments. |
| April–May 2026 | Xbox Mode began expanding from handheld-focused availability to Windows 11 desktops, laptops, and tablets, according to Tom’s Hardware. |
| July 27, 2026 | Microsoft expanded Ubisoft content in Xbox on PC and began a selected Xbox-console-to-PC benefit. This is separate from the core aggregation feature. |
So there was not one single August 2026 update that suddenly replaced every PC game launcher. The current experience is the result of several stages. Availability can also vary during Microsoft’s progressive rollouts.

Microsoft explicitly refers to the Xbox library, PC Game Pass, Battle.net, and “other leading PC storefronts.” Its current Xbox PC app page says users can bring together games from “most PC storefronts.”
Secondary coverage has reported integrations involving stores such as Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Ubisoft Connect. However, Microsoft does not publish a complete, permanent compatibility list in the cited announcement. Support can depend on the store, the individual game, the installation location, account state, and the way that title launches.
That means a supported storefront does not guarantee that:
- every game in that store will appear;
- every installation directory will be detected;
- every DRM or launcher configuration will work;
- Xbox will provide the store’s artwork, metadata, achievements, cloud saves, mods, or DLC controls; or
- the game can be installed directly from Xbox.
The safest description is “a growing aggregator for Xbox and many major PC storefronts,” not a universal API that has absorbed the entire PC ecosystem.

Does the Xbox app download Steam, Epic, or Battle.net games?
Usually, no. The evidence supports centralized discovery and launching, not the conversion of third-party games into Xbox-owned installations.
If you own a game on Steam, that ownership remains attached to your Steam account. If a title requires Battle.net or Ubisoft Connect, those accounts and clients remain part of the process. Xbox may open the appropriate launcher or pass control to it, but it does not remove the original store’s authentication and DRM.

Depending on the game, you may still need the original client for:
- downloading and patching;
- logging in and validating ownership;
- cloud saves;
- DLC and add-on management;
- mod or Workshop support;
- multiplayer services; and
- refunds, purchases, and account settings.
In practical terms, the Xbox app can replace the shortcut layer, but it generally cannot replace the underlying distribution and account ecosystem.

How to make installed games appear
For a game installed through a supported storefront, use this basic process:
- Install the game through its original PC storefront.
- Open the Xbox PC app.
- Select My Library.
- Look for the game in the library. It may also appear under Most Recent.
- Select the game to launch it.
Automatic detection depends on storefront support, the game’s installation details, the launcher configuration, and whether the relevant accounts and clients are working correctly. A game appearing in the Xbox library does not prove that Xbox has taken over its installation or ownership.
How to hide a storefront
If you want Xbox and Game Pass games in the app but do not want every third-party installation listed:
- Select your profile picture.
- Open Settings.
- Select Library & Extensions.
- Find the storefront listing you want to remove.
- Toggle it off or hide it.
Titles from the hidden storefront should no longer appear in the Xbox library. The exact labels may change as the app is updated, but Library & Extensions is Microsoft’s documented settings path.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Automatic detection is not universal. Windows Central reported that the Xbox PC app can now accept manually selected executables:
- Open the Xbox PC app.
- Go to My Library.
- Select the small + icon in the upper-right corner.
- Choose a suggested app, or browse for a file manually.
- Select the relevant Windows
.exe. - Launch the added entry from the Xbox library.
The report also says that manually added entries can receive custom names, icons, and launch arguments. This is useful for games that automatic scanning misses, portable games, and applications you want available in a controller-oriented interface.
It is still only an executable shortcut. Manual addition does not automatically provide store metadata, update management, achievements, DLC handling, cloud saves, or account linking. It is therefore less comprehensive than full storefront integration and may be less flexible than Steam’s mature non-Steam-game workflow.

What to do when a game is missing
- Check Settings → Library & Extensions and confirm that the relevant storefront is enabled.
- Close and restart the Xbox app.
- Open the original launcher and verify that the game is installed and playable there.
- Update the original launcher and the Xbox app.
- Check whether the game uses an unusual installation directory, shortcut, wrapper, or nonstandard executable.
- Use My Library → + to add the executable manually, if that option is available to you.
- Keep the original launcher installed even if Xbox successfully opens the game.
If an entry disappears after an app update, first check the original storefront and installation. That is more likely to be a synchronization or integration problem than a loss of ownership.
Why another launcher may still open
This is normal, not necessarily a failure. The Xbox app may be functioning as the entry point while the game’s required client runs behind it.
Battle.net authentication, Ubisoft Connect ownership checks, publisher-specific DRM, and other launcher services can still be required. The July 2026 Ubisoft announcement is a clear example: selected owners of digital Xbox console versions received PC access through Ubisoft Connect, and Microsoft instructed users to update that client.
The offer is also not Xbox Play Anywhere. It is a separate console-to-PC arrangement for specified Ubisoft games and editions. The listed titles include Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Far Cry 6, Immortals Fenyx Rising, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, Riders Republic, Skull and Bones, The Crew 2, The Crew Motorfest, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, and Watch Dogs Legion.
Microsoft said existing owners received access through a progressive rollout ending August 4, 2026. Most owned editions and DLC were included, while consumables such as in-game currency were excluded. The direction is Xbox console to PC, not PC to Xbox.
What Game Pass adds
Game Pass supplies the Xbox-owned and subscription-access portion of the library. Microsoft says users can browse the PC Game Pass catalog, download eligible games, and launch them through the Xbox app. Game Pass is sold separately.
A Game Pass listing is not necessarily permanent ownership. Games can leave the catalog, and access depends on an active membership and the current plan’s terms. Some third-party titles may also involve external launchers. Cloud gaming is a separate feature from local PC installation.
Likewise, an installed Steam, Epic, Battle.net, or Ubisoft game appearing beside Game Pass titles does not turn that game into an Xbox purchase. The library is unified; the licenses are not.

Xbox Mode is a controller-optimized, full-screen Windows interface. Microsoft describes it as a dedicated gaming experience that can switch between Xbox Mode and the normal Windows desktop.

- Versatile compatibility: supports Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S consoles and PC Win10 and above (including the game platform Steam).
- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
Its value is clearest on a Windows handheld. Desktop Windows can make it awkward to find the right launcher, move between clients, and navigate small controls with a gamepad. Xbox Mode puts the aggregated library, Game Pass titles, and recently played games behind a console-style interface while Windows remains underneath.
On Windows 11 desktops, laptops, and tablets, the benefit is more about convenience and living-room use. It does not change the ownership or DRM rules of the games it displays. Xbox Mode availability is tied to Microsoft’s Windows 11 rollout and device eligibility, so it should not be treated as identical across every Windows PC.
Requirements
Microsoft lists the following requirements for the Xbox PC app:
- Windows 10 or Windows 11, version 22H2 or later;
- at least 150 MB of storage for the app;
- a 720p display;
- hardware that meets the requirements of the individual games; and
- possibly leaving Windows S mode before installing or using it for gaming.
These are app requirements, not universal game requirements. A demanding PC title may require substantially more storage, memory, graphics performance, or a newer Windows configuration. Xbox Mode is specifically presented as a Windows 11 experience.

| Use case | Xbox PC app | Playnite | Steam |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Game Pass users and Windows handhelds | Highly customized multi-store libraries | Steam-heavy libraries and Steam features |
| Store aggregation | Supported stores detected by Microsoft | Broad coverage through integrations and extensions | Primarily Steam, with non-Steam shortcuts |
| Controller interface | Xbox Mode and Xbox app integration | Configurable, but requires more setup | Mature Big Picture mode |
| Customization | Improving, including reported manual entries | Extensive metadata, categories, scripts, and artwork controls | Strong for Steam games and manually added programs |
| Installation and updates | Usually handled by Xbox, Game Pass, or the original store | Usually delegated to the relevant store | Strong for Steam games, but external launchers remain external |
Choose Xbox if you mainly play Game Pass titles, want Xbox account and social integration, or use a Windows handheld. Choose Playnite if you want maximum control over metadata, emulators, scripts, categories, and many sources. Choose Steam if your library and controller habits are centered on Steam Input, Workshop, screenshots, Remote Play, Big Picture, and its community features.
Playnite is free and flexible, but it demands more configuration and maintenance. Steam is polished, but it is not a neutral replacement for every other store. Neither it nor Xbox necessarily bypasses publisher launchers.
The verdict
As of August 18, 2026, the Xbox PC app is a credible central library and launch hub—not a complete universal replacement for PC storefronts.
It can automatically surface many installed games, let you hide unwanted storefronts, accept manual executable entries, and provide a controller-first Xbox Mode on eligible Windows 11 devices. That is a meaningful improvement over managing separate shortcuts, especially on handhelds and for Game Pass subscribers.
But downloading, buying, authenticating, updating, modifying, and supporting a game still generally belongs to the original store or publisher launcher. The most accurate description is therefore a Microsoft-built cross-store launcher shell: useful as one front door, but not the building’s entire distribution system.
