Intel’s April 2025 Arc graphics-driver update was a targeted efficiency improvement, not a new GPU or a universal performance upgrade. Intel reported higher average GPU frequency, better frame pacing, higher average FPS and stronger 1% lows on Lunar Lake systems—especially at a constrained 17-watt power limit.

The initial handhelds covered were the MSI Claw 8 AI+ and MSI Claw 7 AI+. The results came from Intel’s own testing, so they should not be treated as proof that every Lunar Lake device or every game receives the same boost.

What Intel actually changed

Intel’s announcement, published on April 29, 2025, described a graphics-driver power-management optimization for systems built around Core Ultra 200V processors, better known by the codename Lunar Lake.

The relevant integrated graphics are Intel Arc 140V and Arc 130V. The update did not add graphics hardware or change Lunar Lake’s architecture. Instead, Intel said the driver improved how the GPU operated within a limited system power budget.

In Intel’s explanation, the optimization produced a higher average GPU frequency and improved frame pacing. Those changes were associated with higher average frame rates and better 1% lows. In practical terms, the most important improvement may be smoother delivery of frames rather than a dramatic increase in peak FPS.

That mechanism is an inference from Intel’s description, not an independently demonstrated result: if the GPU can sustain a more effective frequency without raising the configured power target, a handheld may deliver more frames and fewer severe dips at the same wattage.

Which handhelds are covered?

Intel initially named two handhelds:

  • MSI Claw 8 AI+
  • MSI Claw 7 AI+

Intel said broader Core Ultra 200V availability would depend on validation with OEM partners. That qualification matters. The announcement does not automatically apply to:

  • The original MSI Claw, which uses a different processor platform.
  • AMD-powered handhelds.
  • Every Lunar Lake laptop or handheld.
  • Devices with different cooling systems, BIOS settings, memory configurations or power limits.

Even when two systems use the same Lunar Lake processor and Arc graphics, manufacturer firmware and power tuning can change the result.

How large are the claimed gains?

Intel characterized the improvement as significant and reported double-digit percentage gains in several games. Its testing covered nine titles. Contemporary coverage identified particularly notable results in Fortnite, Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2 and Payday 3, while gains were smaller in games including Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered and Cyberpunk 2077.

Those descriptions should not be turned into a universal “double-digit FPS” promise. The accessible source material does not provide a complete, independently verifiable title-by-title percentage table. The results were Intel’s own measurements on an MSI Claw 8 AI+ using its Manual 17 W profile. HotHardware’s contemporary report also noted that it had not independently tested the updated drivers at the time.

Metric What it indicates
Average FPS Overall rendering throughput during the test.
1% lows How the game performs during its slower moments; a rough indicator of severe dips.
Frame pacing How evenly frames arrive. Better pacing can make gameplay feel smoother without a large average-FPS increase.
Average GPU frequency An intermediate measurement showing how the GPU operated, not a performance guarantee by itself.

Why the 17 W profile is central

Handhelds constantly balance CPU power, GPU power, heat, fan noise and battery life. At a low system power limit, the way the processor and integrated GPU share that budget can have a larger effect on gaming performance.

Intel’s key test used the MSI Claw 8 AI+ in its Manual 17 W profile. That is why the announcement is best understood as a low-power efficiency story. The improvement may be most visible when the handheld is trying to maintain playable performance without drawing substantially more power.

Intel did not establish that the same gains apply at 20–30 W, unrestricted AC power, battery-saving modes, other OEM profiles or external-display configurations. Results can also change with thermal throttling, frame-rate caps, variable refresh rate and background activity.

Which driver version started the update?

Intel identified graphics driver 32.0.101.6734 and newer as the qualifying range for the MSI Claw 8 AI+ and Claw 7 AI+ announcement. HotHardware subsequently referenced versions 32.0.101.6737 and 32.0.101.6739.

Those numbers are historical. They should not be presented as the latest drivers in a current article. The correct package in 2026 depends on MSI’s support releases, Intel’s current generic package and the exact regional model.

How to update an MSI Claw safely

  1. Identify the exact model. Confirm that the handheld is a Claw 7 AI+ or Claw 8 AI+ and verify its processor.
  2. Check MSI first. Visit the model-specific MSI support page for the current graphics driver, BIOS and MSI Center M software.
  3. Read the release notes. Look for BIOS prerequisites, supported models and known issues.
  4. Preserve a rollback path. Download the existing MSI package, create a restore point where practical and record the current driver and BIOS versions.
  5. Install the driver and reboot. Do not judge performance immediately if the system is still compiling shaders or completing setup.
  6. Verify the installation. Open Device Manager → Display adapters → Intel Arc graphics → Properties → Driver and check the driver version.
  7. Compare consistently. Use the same game patch, resolution, graphics preset, upscaling settings, frame cap, power profile and AC/battery state before and after the update.

MSI’s driver or Intel’s generic driver?

An OEM driver is not necessarily obsolete simply because Intel offers a newer generic package. Manufacturer drivers can contain device-specific tuning for power modes, hotkeys, display behavior, sleep and performance profiles. Intel’s generic drivers may provide newer graphics fixes or features before the OEM integrates them.

For a stable MSI Claw, the sensible default is to use MSI’s package first. Consider the Intel generic driver when Intel documents a relevant fix that MSI has not shipped or when the OEM package is substantially older. Keep the MSI installer available in case the generic package disrupts handheld-specific behavior.

Later driver reports make caution worthwhile

Later Intel Community discussions described possible long-uptime instability on one MSI Claw 8 AI+ configuration associated with driver 32.0.101.8247. Reports mentioned missing CPU information, Desktop Window Manager failures, Chromium-related triggers and suspected power-management problems.

These are community reports, not evidence that every user or every version is affected. They do show why “newer” should not automatically be treated as “better” for a handheld whose BIOS, control software and graphics driver are tightly integrated.

In its support guidance, Intel advised checking for a BIOS update, considering the manufacturer’s official driver and using MSI Center M’s Balanced Mode, with Over Boost enabled where supported and appropriate BIOS prerequisites met. Do not blindly roll back to 31.0.101.5444: Intel’s discussion acknowledged that this older package was not appropriate for a Claw 8 AI+ released in December 2024.

What to do if performance or stability gets worse

  1. Reboot and retest after shader compilation and driver setup have settled.
  2. Check MSI Center M and confirm the intended power profile and wattage.
  3. Update the BIOS from MSI if applicable.
  4. Reinstall the MSI graphics package if a generic Intel driver caused the problem.
  5. Use Windows driver rollback or Device Manager only when the previous package is available and known to match the device.
  6. Record the exact driver, BIOS, Windows build, game version, power mode and symptoms before reporting the issue.

What this means for buyers

The driver update makes Intel’s Lunar Lake graphics more competitive in a specific scenario: gaming at a constrained handheld power level. It does not settle the broader AMD-versus-Intel handheld comparison.

Battery life, cooling, display quality, controls, software support, price, game compatibility and the maturity of the manufacturer’s update process remain separate buying considerations. The MSI Claw 8 AI+ and Claw 7 AI+ may appeal to buyers who value Lunar Lake efficiency and MSI’s hardware, but they are less compelling for anyone unwilling to manage occasional BIOS and driver interactions.

Likewise, existing Claw owners should check their model and support packages before assuming they qualify. A single 2025 driver announcement is not a reason to buy any Intel handheld—or evidence that every Intel system is faster than every AMD alternative.

Verdict

Intel’s Lunar Lake Arc driver update was meaningful, but narrower than its headline. On the MSI Claw 8 AI+ and Claw 7 AI+, Intel reported better performance and frame consistency at roughly 17 W, with especially strong results in some games. The claim was based on first-party testing of one handheld profile and nine games, not an independently verified universal uplift.

For owners, update through MSI first, compare OEM and generic packages carefully, and keep a recovery plan. For buyers, treat the driver as evidence of improving software efficiency—not as a complete answer to the handheld market.
