The Xbox VR headset teased in 2024 did launch—but it is not a new Xbox console or a Microsoft-built rival to PlayStation VR2. The finished product is the Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition, a limited-edition Quest 3S bundle released on June 24, 2025, with Xbox branding, an Xbox Wireless Controller, an Elite Strap and promotional subscriptions.
In practical terms, it gives you a Meta Quest headset that can run normal Quest VR software and access Xbox Cloud Gaming through a large virtual screen. It does not turn Xbox games into native VR titles.

What Microsoft and Meta actually announced
The original headline came from Meta’s April 22, 2024 announcement about opening its Quest operating system to third-party hardware makers under the Meta Horizon OS name.
As part of that announcement, Meta said it was working with Microsoft on a limited-edition Meta Quest inspired by Xbox. The announcement did not describe a new Microsoft-designed headset, a new Xbox operating system for VR or a native Xbox VR software platform.

That distinction matters because “Xbox VR headset” can sound like an Xbox equivalent to PlayStation VR2. The product that eventually arrived is better described as an Xbox-branded Meta Quest 3S.
Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition: what is in the box?
Xbox announced the finished product on June 24, 2025, at a US launch price of $399.99. The bundle is based on the 128GB Meta Quest 3S and uses Xbox Carbon Black and Velocity Green styling.

Xbox described it as the first limited-edition Quest release, with quantities “extremely limited.” The announcement listed Meta.com, Best Buy in the United States, and Argos and EE in the United Kingdom as launch retailers. Those were launch details, not confirmation of stock or pricing in September 2026. Current availability should be checked directly with a retailer, and used listings may be missing promotional redemption codes.

The official announcement does not claim a faster processor, higher resolution, better lenses or Xbox-exclusive internal hardware compared with a normal Quest 3S. Its differences are the design, accessories and bundled trials.

How Xbox gaming works on the headset
The Xbox experience is built around the Xbox app on Quest and Xbox Cloud Gaming:
- Complete the normal Meta Quest setup.
- Install or open the Xbox app on the headset.
- Sign in with a Microsoft/Xbox account.
- Pair and use the included Xbox Wireless Controller or another supported controller.
- Choose a compatible cloud-playable game.
- Play it on a large virtual display inside the headset.
This is streaming, not local Xbox-console hardware. The headset receives video from the cloud and sends your controller input back over the internet. Xbox’s later cloud-gaming guide recommends at least 20 Mbps for a stable connection, but bandwidth alone does not guarantee a good experience. Latency, Wi-Fi quality, congestion, distance from the router and regional server availability all matter.
Xbox Cloud Gaming also requires an eligible subscription tier, and the exact catalog and features can change. Game Pass does not mean that every Xbox game is available to stream, nor does it permanently give you ownership of the games. Cloud availability varies by country.
The included three-month Game Pass Ultimate period is promotional access. It is not permanent, so check the renewal terms and cancel before renewal if you do not want to continue paying.

Is it really an Xbox VR headset?
Yes, as an Xbox-branded partnership product. No, as a new Xbox hardware platform.
The Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition is still a Quest headset running Meta’s platform. It can run ordinary Quest VR games, mixed-reality applications and other software from the Quest ecosystem. Xbox Cloud Gaming adds a large-screen console-style experience, but it does not create stereoscopic or room-scale VR versions of Xbox games.
It is therefore useful to separate three different experiences:

- Other streaming or connected-device use: Experiences that depend on separate services, devices or applications.
Calling streamed Xbox games “Xbox VR games” without that explanation is misleading. The headset does not natively run the Xbox console operating system, install Xbox console games locally or make the entire Xbox library VR-compatible.

Can it connect directly to an Xbox console?
Xbox’s official material emphasizes Xbox Cloud Gaming through the Xbox app on Quest. It does not present the special-edition headset as a dedicated Xbox-console VR peripheral or promise a universal mode for playing installed Xbox console titles inside VR.
The included Xbox Wireless Controller is an input device for the cloud-gaming experience. Its inclusion does not make the headset an Xbox console.

The most sensible comparison is not “which headset is faster?” The Xbox Edition is fundamentally a themed bundle. It may be worthwhile if you want the Elite Strap, Xbox controller, collectible styling and included trials. If you only want Quest functionality, a standard model may be the more rational choice.

Who should buy it?
Good fit
- Xbox players who want a private big screen: The headset can create a large display without requiring a television.
- Game Pass Ultimate subscribers: Existing subscribers can make immediate use of the cloud-gaming feature, subject to regional and network limits.
- Quest newcomers: The bundle includes accessories that improve the basic package and provides access to the wider Quest ecosystem.
- Collectors: The Xbox design and limited production are the main reasons to value it beyond standard Quest hardware.
Poor fit
- Buyers seeking native Xbox VR: This is not a first-party Xbox VR platform or a library of Xbox-exclusive VR games.
- Users with unreliable internet: Cloud gaming is sensitive to latency, Wi-Fi interference and network congestion.
- People avoiding subscriptions: The Xbox portion depends heavily on Game Pass-supported cloud gaming, and the included trial expires.
- Existing Quest owners: If you already have a comfortable headset, controller and access to Xbox Cloud Gaming, the bundle adds mostly branding and accessories.
- Buyers paying an extreme resale premium: Limited-edition status does not improve the headset’s underlying Quest 3S performance.
Availability and resale warnings
Xbox said the edition would be available in extremely limited quantities and that units would not be replenished once sold. The named launch retailers were Meta.com, Best Buy in the US, and Argos and EE in the UK.
Do not treat those historical retailer names as proof that new stock remains available. A current marketplace listing may be used, open-box, region-specific or missing the Game Pass and Horizon+ codes. Confirm what is physically included, whether promotional benefits have been redeemed and whether the seller is charging a large premium over the $399.99 US launch price.
The bottom line
The Xbox VR headset is real, but the headline needs translation. The Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition is a limited-edition Meta headset with Xbox styling, an Xbox controller, an Elite Strap and temporary subscription benefits. It is also a way to use Xbox Cloud Gaming on a large virtual screen.
