Xbox Game Pass is a subscription, not a game-ownership plan. For a monthly fee, you can access a changing catalog of games on supported Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, handhelds, and cloud-enabled devices. You can download some games or stream others, but access ends when your subscription expires or a title leaves the catalog.
As of August 16, 2026, Microsoft lists four main U.S. plans: Essential, Premium, Ultimate, and PC Game Pass. Prices and catalogs vary by country and can change, so use Microsoft’s official comparison page and live signup flow before subscribing.

What is Xbox Game Pass?
Xbox Game Pass is Microsoft’s recurring game subscription. It provides access to a library that changes over time, with availability determined by your plan, country, device, and the individual game’s platform support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGame Pass is different from buying a game:
- Download: You install the game locally, but the right to play it is tied to your active subscription and the game’s continued inclusion.
- Cloud stream: The game runs on Microsoft’s servers and is streamed to a supported device. You do not install the full game.
- Purchase: Buying a game separately generally preserves access after canceling Game Pass, subject to the normal Microsoft Store license terms.
Microsoft says subscribers can play included games until the subscription expires or the game leaves the library. A downloaded Game Pass game is therefore not automatically a permanent copy. See the official Game Pass page for current terms.

Xbox Game Pass plans and prices
The following are U.S. monthly prices checked on August 16, 2026. Taxes, regional pricing, promotions, and account-specific introductory offers may differ.
| Plan | Price | Best for | Main benefits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | Verify in checkout | Budget-conscious console players | 50+ games, cloud gaming, online console multiplayer, in-game benefits, Rewards |
| Premium | $14.99/month | Players wanting a broad catalog without Ultimate extras | 200+ games, cloud gaming, multiplayer, selected Xbox-published games within one year, 2× Rewards |
| Ultimate | $22.99/month | Multi-platform players and day-one seekers | 500+ games, selected day-one games, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, cloud gaming, multiplayer, 4× Rewards |
| PC Game Pass | $13.99/month | Windows PC players | 300+ PC games, selected day-one games, EA Play, in-game benefits, 2× Rewards |
The catalog totals are Microsoft’s approximate marketing counts, not fixed promises of a particular number of games on every device. Availability changes by region, plan, platform, and time. Microsoft announced on April 21, 2026 that the U.S. price of Ultimate fell from $29.99 to $22.99 per month and PC Game Pass fell from $16.49 to $13.99.
Essential
Essential is the lowest-cost option for players who want console multiplayer, cloud access, and a smaller selection of games. Microsoft advertises 50+ games and says the plan does not include new releases on day one.

Premium
Premium costs $14.99 per month in the U.S. and includes 200+ games across supported console, PC, and other devices. It includes cloud gaming, online console multiplayer, in-game benefits, and 2× Rewards points. Selected Xbox-published games are advertised as arriving within one year of launch, rather than as a general day-one benefit.
Ultimate
Ultimate costs $22.99 per month in the U.S. and has Microsoft’s largest advertised catalog, at 500+ games. It adds selected day-one releases, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, online console multiplayer, and cloud gaming with the best stated quality and shortest waits among the Game Pass plans.
Ultimate is not automatically the right choice for everyone. Its value depends on whether you will use the larger library, day-one releases, cloud priority, and bundled services.

It is generally the logical choice for someone who plays only on Windows PC. Do not assume it provides the same console or cloud benefits as Ultimate; check the current comparison page for the exact platform and cloud entitlements available in your region.
Which Game Pass plan should you get?
- You own an Xbox and want the cheapest paid multiplayer option: Start with Essential if its catalog and cloud features are sufficient.
- You want many games but can wait for selected Xbox releases: Premium offers a larger catalog without Ultimate’s price.
- You want day-one releases, the broadest catalog, or console and PC access: Choose Ultimate, provided you will use its bundled benefits.
- You play only on Windows PC: PC Game Pass is usually the most focused option.
- You mainly want cloud gaming: Compare Essential, Premium, and Ultimate for regional availability, supported games, queue times, and streaming quality.
- You mainly play one game for months: Buying that game may cost less than maintaining a subscription.
- You want permanent access: Buy the games you expect to keep, rather than relying solely on Game Pass.
What does “day one” mean?
A day-one game is available to qualifying subscribers on its release date. It does not mean every new game launches in every plan, on every platform, or with every edition and expansion included.
Publisher policies can create exceptions. In Microsoft’s April 21, 2026 announcement, future Call of Duty releases were described as arriving in Ultimate and PC Game Pass during the following holiday season—approximately a year after release—instead of at launch. Do not interpret older promotional wording as a promise that every future Call of Duty game will be day one on Game Pass. Check the individual title announcement and current plan terms.

Xbox Game Pass games list
There is no reliable permanent list to reproduce in an article because the catalog changes continually. Use Microsoft’s live Game Pass catalog, then filter by the details that matter to you:
- Subscription plan
- Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One
- Windows PC
- Handhelds
- Cloud
- Xbox Play Anywhere
- Genre
- Recently added, most popular, or coming soon
- Leaving soon
- Day-one games
- Activision, Bethesda, Blizzard, Xbox Game Studios, EA Play, and Ubisoft collections
Before installing a specific game, open its individual listing. A title may be included in one plan but not another, downloadable on Xbox but not PC, or available in the catalog without cloud support. It may also be an EA Play or Ubisoft+ Classics benefit, a trial, or an add-on rather than the complete base game.
The catalog count also does not mean that every plan has the same 500-plus games available on every device. Platform rights and regional licensing determine what you can actually play.
How Game Pass works on Xbox, PC, and cloud
Xbox consoles
On Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, sign in with the Microsoft account that holds the subscription, browse the Game Pass section, and install an included title. The game checks your subscription entitlement when launched. Console plans also cover online multiplayer for paid games, subject to the plan’s console benefits.

PC subscribers generally use the Xbox PC app to browse and install PC Game Pass games. Some PC titles require another launcher or account, and “included with Game Pass” does not always mean that installation and launching happen entirely inside the Xbox app.

- Experience the next generation in entertainment with the Microsoft Xbox One games console
- Powerful hardware provides stunning, true-to-life graphics
- Play with millions of other gamers across the web with Xbox Live
- Jump seamlessly between your favourite game, TV show or movie
- Includes a Wireless Controller
Some games also have different rights or versions on console and PC. Check the platform icons on the game’s listing before subscribing for a particular title.
Cloud gaming
Cloud gaming streams gameplay from Microsoft’s servers instead of installing the full game. Xbox lists support for phones and tablets, selected Samsung and LG smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV, Meta VR headsets, supported handhelds, and web browsers through xbox.com/play.
Cloud gaming is affected by latency, Wi-Fi congestion, data caps, regional support, device compatibility, and queue times. A controller is required or strongly preferred for many games. Streaming quality and wait priority vary by plan. Not every Game Pass title is cloud-playable, and some cloud-playable games may be sold separately rather than included in your subscription.
Does Game Pass include online multiplayer?
Plans marketed for console play include online console multiplayer for paid games. Xbox also allows free-to-play multiplayer games to be played online without a paid multiplayer subscription.
PC multiplayer requirements differ from console requirements. In every case, online access does not make a separately purchased game part of Game Pass, and it does not make every expansion or add-on free.
What are EA Play, Fortnite Crew, and Ubisoft+ Classics?
- EA Play: Included with Ultimate and PC Game Pass. It provides access to an EA collection plus selected trials, challenges, rewards, and member content. Platform support and launcher requirements vary.
- Fortnite Crew: Included with Ultimate. Microsoft describes access to current Fortnite passes and monthly V-Bucks, subject to applicable terms.
- Ubisoft+ Classics: Included with Ultimate. Microsoft advertises 50+ Ubisoft games through Ubisoft+ Classics.
These are bundled benefits, not a guarantee of every game, premium edition, expansion, or service feature offered directly by those publishers. Benefits can change.
What happens when a game leaves Game Pass?
You can continue playing until the removal date if your subscription remains active. After removal, your choices are:
- Buy the game before it leaves, using any applicable subscriber discount.
- Purchase it later and resume playing from your account.
- Rejoin if the game returns to the catalog, although a return is not guaranteed.
Use the catalog’s Leaving soon filter to identify departing titles. A downloaded copy does not remain playable merely because it is still installed.

Is Xbox Game Pass worth it?
Use your actual playing and buying habits rather than the headline game count.
Game Pass is more likely to be worthwhile if you play two or three included games each month, want to sample games before buying, value day-one releases, use both console and PC, rely on cloud gaming, or would otherwise pay for games and services included in Ultimate.
It may be poor value if you mostly play free-to-play games, spend months on one title, need a game that is not included, have unreliable internet for cloud play, already own most of the catalog, or want permanent ownership.
A simple comparison is:
Monthly value threshold = subscription price ÷ average effective price of games you would otherwise buy.
For example, at $22.99 per month, Ultimate costs about $69 over three months. Someone who would otherwise buy one $70 game every three months is near the same monthly spending level. That is only a comparison model: ownership, discounts, playtime, catalog changes, and bundled benefits can change the result.

Microsoft describes a limited refund route for an unwanted recurring charge when the user cancels within 30 days, subject to a stated one-time-per-account, per-product limitation. Eligibility is determined by Microsoft’s current terms and account flow; do not assume every cancellation produces a refund.

Important limitations before subscribing
- Prices, introductory offers, catalog size, and availability vary by country and can change.
- Promotional pricing may be limited to new subscribers, selected accounts, or selected regions and can convert to the regular price automatically.
- Some PC games require third-party launchers, and certain Rewards rules exclude games with particular launcher requirements.
- Family sharing is not an unrestricted household entitlement. Check current Microsoft account, home-console, simultaneous-use, and platform rules before relying on one subscription for multiple people.
- Rewards multipliers are Microsoft’s advertised benefits and may depend on market, age, activity, and other terms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play Game Pass games after canceling?
Only until the subscription expires, or until the game leaves the catalog. To keep playing after that, buy the game separately.
Do I own Game Pass games?
No. Downloading an included game grants subscription access, not permanent ownership.
Does Game Pass work on Xbox One?
Yes, supported Game Pass titles are available on Xbox One, although individual games may require Xbox Series X|S.
Can I play Game Pass games on a phone or TV?
Cloud-supported games can be streamed on compatible phones, tablets, selected TVs, Fire TV devices, browsers, and other supported hardware. Region, plan, game, and device restrictions apply.
Is Call of Duty day one on Game Pass?
Do not assume so. Microsoft’s April 21, 2026 policy said future Call of Duty releases would arrive in Ultimate and PC Game Pass during the following holiday season rather than at launch.
Does Game Pass include EA Play?
EA Play is included with Ultimate and PC Game Pass, subject to platform, launcher, catalog, and service terms.
Can I buy a game at a discount before it leaves?
Often, subscribers are offered a discount on departing games. Check the game’s current store listing and the Leaving soon catalog.
