Microsoft announced the Xbox Nano Controller on October 14, 2026. It is a compact, $49.99 US gamepad with a built-in rechargeable battery, USB-C charging, Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth, and the same 18 standard gameplay inputs found on the familiar Xbox layout. Pre-orders are open now, with retail availability scheduled to begin in November.
The Nano is aimed at children, players with smaller hands, families adding a local-multiplayer pad, and anyone who wants a controller that is easier to carry. It is not simply a cheaper color or trim of the regular pad: its shorter body, lower weight and integrated battery change how it fits and how it is powered.

What the Xbox Nano Controller is
Xbox Accessories General Manager James Hunter described the Nano as “designed to fit nearly every pocket and budget.” Microsoft says it measures a little over 5 inches long and weighs 3.5 ounces, making it the company’s smallest controller and shorter and lighter than most modern smartphones.
Recommended Free Tools
The controller retains 18 standard gameplay inputs, so games built around the normal Xbox control scheme do not require a new button arrangement. It also adds a programmable Action Button, which can be assigned to a supported function according to the game or device experience.

Price, pre-orders and release timing

Kotaku’s Ethan Gach described the Nano as $15 cheaper than the regular-sized Xbox controller. That is a reported comparison rather than a universal regional price: Microsoft’s announcement confirms the Nano’s US price, while the standard controller’s current price can vary by market, retailer and promotion.
Battery and connections
Built-in rechargeable power
The Nano has an integrated rechargeable battery and charges through USB-C. Normal use does not require AA batteries. That removes the need to keep disposable cells or a separate battery pack available, although the controller will still need periodic charging.

Xbox and Bluetooth wireless
Xbox Wireless supports compatible Xbox setups, while Bluetooth expands use to compatible PCs, televisions and mobile devices. Compatibility depends on the device and its operating-system support; the presence of Bluetooth does not guarantee that every smart-TV model or phone supports every controller feature.

The meaningful choice is ergonomic and practical rather than purely numerical. The Nano sacrifices the larger shell some adults prefer in exchange for a smaller reach, lower carry weight and rechargeable power. The standard pad offers the familiar full-size feel and uses AA batteries, which can be convenient if you keep spares but less convenient when traveling.

Who should consider the Nano?
- Children and younger players: Smaller grips can make triggers, bumpers and thumbsticks easier to reach.
- Players with smaller hands: The reduced length may lessen stretching during long sessions.
- Families: Its lower launch price creates a less expensive route to another controller for local multiplayer.
- Travelers: At 3.5 ounces and a little over 5 inches, it takes less room in a bag than a typical full-size pad.
- Cloud and streaming players: Xbox lists play on compatible devices, including PC, TV streaming and Xbox Cloud Gaming accessories.
Adults with large hands should treat the compact dimensions as a fit question, not an automatic upgrade. A smaller controller can improve reach for one player and feel cramped to another.
Xbox Cloud Gaming, TVs and portable setups
Xbox says the Nano is suitable for Xbox Cloud Gaming through compatible devices and for PC or TV streaming. Bluetooth is the relevant connection for many non-console devices, but exact support is determined by the device maker. Before buying it for a television, check that model’s controller compatibility and whether the desired cloud-gaming app accepts Bluetooth gamepads.

For the 2026 holiday period, Xbox also announced bundles in which select Samsung TVs include the controller and two months of Game Pass Ultimate for new members. A separate Meta Quest offer includes the same benefits. Qualifying models, end dates and regional terms were not specified in the announcement, so buyers should verify those details for their country and product before relying on a bundle.
What to check before ordering
- Confirm your region: The $49.99 figure is the US price; UK and other markets use local pricing.
- Check hand fit: Compare the Nano’s little-over-5-inch body with the full-size controller you already use, especially if you have larger hands.
- Plan charging: USB-C charging replaces AA cells, so include a compatible cable or charger in your setup.
- Verify the target device: Confirm Xbox Wireless or Bluetooth support on your PC, television, tablet or phone before purchase.
- Check bundle eligibility: For TV or headset promotions, read the qualifying-model, membership and regional conditions at checkout.
Bottom line
The Xbox Nano Controller is a genuine smaller-format Xbox pad, not a stripped-down novelty. At $49.99 in the US, with 18 familiar inputs, a programmable Action Button, dual wireless connectivity and a rechargeable USB-C battery, it directly addresses portability and smaller-hand comfort. Its main uncertainty is personal fit: players who prefer a full-size grip may still favor the standard controller, while families, children and travelers have a clear reason to choose the Nano.
