1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe RK2020 could play some Nintendo 64 games, but it was never a dependable pocket-sized N64. Reviewed in 2020 at roughly $80, this Linux handheld was much better at NES, SNES, Genesis, and PlayStation emulation than at demanding 3D games. Super Mario 64 was playable with graphical glitches, while Mario Kart 64 and GoldenEye 007 exposed slowdowns, audio problems, and stutter.
That “almost” is the important part. The RK2020 was historically interesting and inexpensive, but its single-card Linux setup, uncertain firmware history, limited controls, and inconsistent N64 performance make it a poor current recommendation unless you find one cheaply as a collector’s curiosity.

What is the RK2020?
The RK2020 was a low-cost Linux emulation handheld released around 2020. Gizmodo reviewed it on July 20, 2020, at an approximately $80 price. Its hardware included a 1.3 GHz quad-core ARM processor, 1 GB of RAM, and a 480 × 320 display.

The device was also described by Gizmodo as a near-clone of Hardkernel’s ODROID-GO Advance. That relationship matters because the RK2020’s software and firmware situation was not as clean or consistent as the branding suggested.

Why N64 emulation was such a big deal
Running NES, SNES, and Genesis games is comparatively straightforward for inexpensive modern handheld hardware. The Nintendo 64 is a much harder target. Its 3D graphics architecture, unusual memory design, game-specific rendering behavior, timing requirements, and emulator configuration all create problems that raw processor speed does not automatically solve.
For that reason, “the RK2020 runs N64” is too broad. The more accurate statement is that it could launch and play selected N64 games with varying degrees of success. Frame rate, audio synchronization, graphics accuracy, control mapping, emulator settings, firmware, and the individual game all mattered.
N64 performance: game by game
Super Mario 64
Super Mario 64 was mostly playable in the review, making it a convincing demonstration of what the RK2020 could do. However, the game showed visible shadow and other graphical artifacts. It was playable, but not an accurate or flawless replacement for the original hardware.
Mario Kart 64
Mario Kart 64 was a less successful test. Races suffered slowdowns, and sound effects could fall out of sync. That is the kind of problem that makes a game technically functional but frustrating in ordinary play.
GoldenEye 007
GoldenEye 007 showed both the handheld’s promise and its limitations. Control remapping made the game more usable, but busy scenes caused stutter. The game’s demanding 3D environments were enough to expose the RK2020’s limited headroom.
Gizmodo’s overall conclusion was that N64 emulation was “mostly a miss.” The RK2020 could put some N64 gaming in a pocket, but it was not a reliable all-purpose N64 machine.

| System family | Historical review result |
|---|---|
| NES and comparable 8-bit systems | Strong |
| SNES and Sega Genesis | Reported as running flawlessly |
| Original PlayStation | Generally solid |
| Dreamcast and PSP | Hit-or-miss |
| Nintendo 64 | Selective and inconsistent |
These are reviewer findings from 2020, not a complete compatibility database. Results can vary with the emulator build, firmware, game dump, settings, and hardware revision. The practical dividing line is simple: the RK2020 was excellent for older 2D consoles, generally capable with PlayStation, and increasingly unreliable as games became more demanding and 3D-focused.
Controls and pocketability
The RK2020’s controls were one of its better features. The review praised its comfortable four-way D-pad, rounded edges, and soft face buttons. The tiered L1/L2 and R1/R2 shoulder buttons were useful for games that needed several triggers.
Its low-profile analog stick was also easier to carry in a pocket than the taller stick on the Anbernic RG350. A supplied rubber cover improved the stick’s feel. However, there was only one analog stick, and that was a significant limitation for some 3D games.

The original N64 controller itself had an unusual three-pronged layout, a central analog stick, a separate D-pad, and multiple shoulder and face-button groups. Mapping those inputs onto the RK2020 was possible, but not always comfortable. GoldenEye 007, in particular, could require remapping before it felt usable.

Portability also involved compromises. The RK2020 was slightly smaller than the RG350 but thicker. Its plastic screen cover was more vulnerable to scratches, the top-mounted headphone jack could be inconvenient, and the recessed power button was difficult to press. There were no dedicated volume buttons. It was pocketable, but not especially polished.
The single microSD card made setup harder
The RK2020 used one microSD card for the Linux operating system, emulators, and game files. That design saved space and cost, but it created an ownership problem: adding games was not necessarily a matter of inserting the card into a computer and dragging files into an obvious folder.
Linux-formatted partitions may not appear normally in Windows or macOS. Gizmodo identified two historical workarounds:
- Attach a USB Wi-Fi dongle and transfer files wirelessly.
- Use software capable of mounting Linux filesystems on a computer, such as software from Paragon.
This was a device-management problem, not just an emulation problem. A handheld could be working perfectly while its owner still struggled to add legally obtained game files. It also meant that making a backup of the operating system and keeping the original card safe were sensible precautions.
For a modern buyer, this setup friction is difficult to justify when newer handhelds commonly offer built-in wireless networking, Android file access, or a separate and more convenient storage arrangement.
Firmware and clone concerns
Gizmodo reported that its reviewed sample contained firmware developed for the ODROID-GO Advance. The report said the RK2020 manufacturer had copied the ODROID-GO Advance hardware and, for a period, installed Hardkernel’s firmware. It also reported that later units might ship without firmware.
That does not mean every RK2020 unit shipped in exactly the same condition. A used listing may include a different system image, a corrupted card, or no usable operating system at all. The firmware history is therefore best understood as a historical warning about consistency and support—not as a current official shipping policy.
ROMs and legal responsibility
The RK2020 was not a licensed Nintendo product, and the hardware itself did not provide game rights. Owners generally supplied their own game files.
ROM law varies by jurisdiction and by what a person does with the files. Downloading, copying, and distributing game images can raise different legal questions, and owning a physical cartridge does not automatically settle every issue surrounding a downloaded or shared digital copy. Use legally obtained backups where permitted and check the law that applies where you live. This article does not provide ROM sources.

Should you buy an RK2020 in 2026?
The original $80 price was a July 2020 review price, not a current retail benchmark. The RK2020 may now be discontinued or available mainly through secondary sellers. A listing can also include an incorrect firmware image, a worn battery, a scratched screen cover, a failing microSD card, or a visually similar ODROID-derived clone.
“Preloaded games” claims are another reason for caution. Such cards can create legal and quality-control problems, and files from unknown sources can introduce security risks. A cheap listing is not necessarily a bargain if restoring the system takes hours or requires replacing several parts.
The RK2020 still makes sense for
- Collectors interested in early inexpensive Linux gaming handhelds
- Tinkerers who enjoy restoring and configuring old hardware
- Players focused mainly on NES, SNES, Genesis, and PlayStation
- Anyone who finds a complete, working unit at a very low price
Skip it if you want
- Reliable full-library N64 compatibility
- Plug-and-play setup
- Modern firmware support or easy replacement parts
- Dependable Dreamcast, PSP, GameCube, or PS2 emulation
- Dual analog sticks or a large modern display
- Simple drag-and-drop game management
Modern alternatives
If N64 performance is the main reason you are shopping, a newer handheld is the more sensible choice. It will cost more than the RK2020 did, but it offers substantially more processing power, better displays, newer software, and easier storage options. No modern device guarantees perfect compatibility with every game, but the baseline is far higher.

Retroid Pocket 5
The official Retroid Pocket 5 page lists a 12 GB RAM configuration, 128 GB of internal storage plus a TF/microSD slot, Android 13, a 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED display, active cooling, a 5,000 mAh battery, Hall-effect sticks, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, and official OTA software support.
The page showed a $209 sale price and $219 regular price when checked, with the product marked sold out at that time. Prices, stock, taxes, and regional availability can change. The Pocket 5 is the stronger recommendation for buyers prioritizing N64 and later systems, but it is much more expensive and less pocket-minimal than the RK2020.
Anbernic RG556
The official Anbernic RG556 page lists a Unisoc T820 processor, 8 GB of LPDDR4X RAM, 128 GB of UFS 2.2 storage, Android 13, a 5.48-inch 1080 × 1920 AMOLED display, a 5,500 mAh battery, active cooling, Hall controls, microSD expansion up to 2 TB, and USB-C DisplayPort output.
The page showed a $179.99 promotional price and $184.99 regular price when checked. It also advertises approximately eight hours of battery life, though real battery life depends on software, brightness, and workload. The RG556 is a larger, more ergonomic alternative for buyers who value screen size and official listed pricing over maximum pocketability. Its specifications alone do not prove perfect performance in every N64 or later-system game.

Accessories for owners and buyers
A reliable, name-brand microSD card is a practical purchase for modern Linux or Android handhelds, particularly when removable storage is used for game files or system images. Capacity and compatibility should be checked against the specific device rather than assumed.
A USB Wi-Fi adapter was one historical way to transfer files to the RK2020, but buying one only makes sense if you already own the handheld. It is not a compelling reason to choose an RK2020 over a newer device with built-in wireless connectivity.
Likewise, filesystem-access software was a historical workaround for the RK2020’s Linux-formatted card. Do not assume that a particular Paragon product remains the correct current solution without checking its present compatibility and pricing. Avoid unverified preloaded-ROM cards.
