The February 19, 2020 Reddit post titled “Thoughts on Oblivion Remastered?” is not a review of Bethesda’s official remaster. Its author clarified: “Edit: Just to clarify, I’m talking about the mod guide, not an actual remaster.” The complaints are about instructions for modding the original The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion; Bethesda’s official remaster arrived in 2025.
What the Reddit post was actually discussing
The title is easy to misread now, but the post predates Bethesda’s commercial remaster by years. The original poster was criticizing a guide for installing mods on the 2006 game, not assessing a new Bethesda release. The thread is useful as a record of one player’s reaction to that guide, not as a current review or a definitive technical resource.
The poster’s complaints
The author said the guide relied on manual mod installation, focused primarily on the Steam edition while having some applicability to GOG, recommended OBMM, and omitted mods they considered essential. They also expressed concerns about stability and maintenance. Those are the poster’s claims and judgments from 2020; the thread does not independently establish that the guide was unsafe, that its compatibility claims remain valid, or that the mod choices were objectively wrong. Its mention of a 3.4 GB video package likewise describes what the poster said they encountered at the time, not a current requirement.
Commenters did not reach a consensus
Replies included criticism of the post as complaining about modding, a commenter wishing for a real remaster, and debate about Pluggy and whether particular mods depended on it. A reply in 2025 reacted to Bethesda’s official release. These exchanges show differing community reactions; they do not amount to technical verification or a shared verdict.

How the 2020 guide discussion differs from the official remaster
Bethesda describes The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered as a modernized version of the 2006 game, with updated visuals and gameplay. Its current product page lists Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox, Steam, and PlayStation 5 purchase paths, and says the game includes Shivering Isles, Knights of the Nine, and additional DLC. Because platforms and patch information can change, consult that page for the latest availability and update details.
In its April 22, 2025 launch statement, Bethesda credited Virtuos as a partner and described its goal as remastering rather than remaking the game. Bethesda said: “We never wanted to remake it – but remaster it – where the original game was there as you remember playing it, but seen through today’s technology.” This explains the studio’s intent; it is not an independent assessment of how successfully the release achieved it.

What to check before following an Oblivion mod guide
The Reddit criticism is historical, so it should not be treated as a current installation recommendation. Before following any guide, confirm that it explicitly targets the game and edition you own. Instructions for the original PC game are not automatically applicable to the official remaster or to console versions.
- Check the guide’s publication date and whether its steps have been updated.
- Verify the supported game edition and platform rather than relying on a general “Oblivion” label.
- Check each mod’s current compatibility notes and dependencies against the specific game version.
- Do not assume the thread’s comments about OBMM, Pluggy, stability, or particular mod choices establish present-day best practice.
Physical Deluxe Edition: platforms and download requirement
Bethesda announced a limited-time Physical Deluxe Edition on October 13, 2025 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. The package includes a disc that grants access to the base game, but an additional download is required; digital extras are supplied by code. Bethesda described the release as available in named regions while supplies lasted. Its announcement establishes the edition and package terms, not current stock or retailer availability. Check the exact platform, region, edition, and listing before buying. The physical edition was not announced for Nintendo Switch 2.
